I love all these classic moments...I also love it when Basil discovers the bricks in the case belonging to one of the guests when they all thought it had valuables in! 😀 Also when they are having the fire drill & there is actually a fire in the kitchen...Manuel comes out of the kitchen to try & raise the alarm & Basil just picks him up & throws him back into the smoke-filled room! LOL! Or when he just spontaneously taps the walls & windows to make himself look like he's busy doing something when he's actually spying on the guests! 😅 Or just simply running up & down the stairs...he's so funny! 😀 Also, his wife Sybil with her vicious tongue that can stop Basil in his tracks! 😅 There are too many favourite moments to mention - but this makes me want to watch them all again! 😅

    Hi Amanda.
My parents owned a hotel in Cornwall. People see this as a comedy but honestly it could of been a documentary. In the time my parents own the hotel we had 2 corpses, the hotel inspectors, Mrs Richards (several times), the Americans, the Germans. We also had the bomb scare, the Japanise, the Australian (several times), the heart attack, the kitchen fire, 5 weddings (incl the bridezilla), the flood, the leaky roof, the burglary, the suicide attempt, the actors, the swingers, oh and my personal favourite the bank robber & the police.

Fawlty Towers is unrivalled. 12 episodes of pure genius.
The man in the basket is 'The Kipper and the Corpse'. The man dies, but Basil thought he had poisoned him with a kipper and the chaos ensures.
The Germans is has me crying with laughter all of the time. The whole episode is about Basil trying to put a moose head on a wall, and then the chaos ensues. When Basil (who has taken a knock to the head) takes the food order from those poor Germans it is a thing of beauty. And, the row with them it ends with quite possibly the greatest comeback line ever, but you have to watch the episode to hear it.
You may note that in both episodes something simple is being done and then total chaos breaks out. That is pretty much every episode.
Watch them in order. Just an FYI John Cleese was married to Connie Booth who plays Polly the housekeeper/maid and their marriage broke up and they were going through a divorce which happened between series 1 and 2 airing. I think that added to the Basil and Sybil relationship which was so iconic.

Hi Amanda. Good reaction video. Have watched Fawlty Towers many times over and over for the past five years but still has me in stitches to this day. I'm 21, and it's good to see someone else around my age to enjoy Fawlty Towers for the masterpiece it is and not get too uptight about it. While I enjoy Fawlty Towers and the writing, the timing and the on-screen chemistry regardless (and always will) I agree that while insurmountably hilarious, I would totally recommend watching the episodes in full to understand the immediate background of the scene at hand.
As well as 'The Germans', two episodes to watch may be Communication Problems with the ferocious Mrs Richards played by Joan Sanderson which causes a mass of confusion in the climax, and also The Psychiatrist which sends Basil sky-high. It's all very subtle (nothing tacky), good-humoured and well-timed. Such are some of the many resounding qualities behind its standing the test of time. The Germans episode is actually cleverly staged in two parts, a little like Shakespeare. Such was the clever influence the writing and production teams took. It's hard to believe as everyone else has said that there were only 12 episodes - it seemed as though there was much more. That's how memorable it is.
I leave you with one of Basil's most underrated quotes: "A satisfied customer. We should have him stuffed."
All the best from Northern Ireland

Number 6 was absolutely hilarious and I practically wet myself laughing, but you missed off the bit where Basil silent speaks to make the old woman think her hearing aid is broken. She turns it up and Basil raises his voice and blasts here ears! 😆
Of course number 1 is classic and so well-known!

the American actress who plays Polly (Connie Booth) was originally hired to play a small part in the series. Such was her genius at comedy and dry humour, she began rewriting scenes making them funnier. John Cleese quickly recognized this and hired her as a permanent writer/producer.

Each episode was very carefully constructed over the 30 minute duration so clips never do it justice. One of my favourites involves Basil typing up a new menu because the chef is drunk. It doesn’t seem much as a 30 second clip but in its correct place it’s a perfect treat. Heartily recommend you watch the whole shows.

Back in '75, when Fawlty Towers was made & first appeared on TV. Our black & white TV broke down. PERMANENTLY. So, until we got a new one we had to watch a little portable TV, again B&W, with 12" screen. THAT was when the episode with the dead guy was shown. Basil & Manuel trying to hide the body, carrying him in his pyjamas from room to room. I almost died myself, laughing at this, which was for me the funniest episode! Tears streamed out of my eyes. At the end of it my eyes were red. I blamed Fawlty for this. But the following night I watched a whole game of football then realised that it was having to peer at the little screen that made my eyes red.

Many, many years ago, my late great Uncle Jack used to own a couple of small hotels on the Dorset coast, and he looked, sounded, and acted like Basil Fawlty.
He wasn't quite as insane as Basil, but almost! Whenever things went wrong (and they went wrong a lot), he would literally start running up and down stairs yelling, and slamming doors. And just like Basil, he was either fawning all over guests with a smarmy smile, or being incredibly rude to them.
John Cleese once said that Basil Fawlty was based on a real life character he encountered while staying in a small hotel in the South West. Apparently the rest of the team left because they couldn't stand it, but he stayed for a week and made notes. And thus Basil Fawlty was born.
I don't know if it was based on Uncle Jack, but my dad was convinced of it (and after all, he was his brother). The time frame, the place, and the person certainly fits. He was definitely an oddball, but we all miss him.

You need to watch them all. The scripts are masterpieces of comedic logic with gags being set up in a ridiculous but inevitable series of mistakes, mishaps and misrule. It has some of the best played comedy stereotypes in Manūel, Sibyl, the Major and Polly, as a straight foil to all the craziness.

Hi Amanda, I definitely recommend Rab C. Nesbitt which ran in 8 seasons from 1990 - 1998/9 then again for 2 short series + 3 specials. This is 'talk to the camera humour' with Rab himself playing someone who is the working class Scottish philospher whose central character is amazing. An absolute 'masterclass' of life among Govan side of Glasgow. There are some fantastic episodes especially in the first 3 or 4 series. Extremely well worth a watch. Sadly like a lot of things there is bad language but a couple of the expletives do not occur. Definitely well worth a watch - highly recommended.
