Great comments and good to see that there are those who embrace this side of street photography, will have to re-visit in more depth!
While I really enjoy photographing people and architecture on my street walks I really get a kick out of finding still life subjects to capture. Not everyone I show them to sees them as an art object. Usually I get "Oh that's cute" or "What is that?" something along those lines. I do it mostly for my own enjoyment.
One of my favorite still life subjects is street food, however, it's not what your thinking. The street food I shoot is food that has been discarded or tossed across a sidewalk or into the street. I find that there's a beauty to the chaos in how it all lands and rots away.
Well-presented. This is largely where I put my energy. Not that I excel at it, necessarily, but it’s what I enjoy most as a photographer. I live in a very small town with almost no street activity, and it suits my eye quite well. I’ve leaned into this style so far that a few years ago, after spending a couple of weeks in two street photography meccas, Paris and London, I realized that most of my photos focused on evidence of people, rather than people themselves. Not sure why I’m drawn to this style; I’m not particularly introverted, and have no trouble doing typical street photos when an opportunity jumps out at me. I’m well into my 70s now and have shot this way for more than 50 years, so I imagine I’ll stick with it.

I have to admit that I wasn’t much into street photography until I really looked at the works of Meyerowitz, Haas, Leiter and Gruyaert. That opened a lot to me. Still I’m drawn to the beauty of such as theirs rather than the grittier styles of others.
Rupert, thank you. There is such an over abundance of “people street photography,” that I’ve become a bit bored with it. I, like some other commenters here, am drawn to still life street photography. Also, I live in a small town with fewer opportunities. So perhaps the small town issues force us to look for other options. It is challenging but often the most rewarding when it works. Thank you for giving greater credence to this particular genre of art photography.

When I walk the streets sometimes there are very few people to photograph. When that happens I have to be creative and take advantage of what the street is giving me. You have opened an avenue for things that might not catch my attention. Thank you.

Great video Rupert, this is my favorite type of genre simply because I live in a small town without any great architecture or lots of people to photograph so this type of photography works best for me. Thank you for sharing!
Wow, thanks. This is right up my ally. I heard that early on William Eggleston complained to someone that where he lived was ugly. They told him to embrace the ugly. I live in the American suburbs and there are all these strip malls everywhere. I was complaining about them, then remembered the Eggleston bit and have been getting some similar shots to some of these on my new project (?) wandering around some of these strip malls. Thanks again!

my favorite stereophotography still life objects are discarded spray cans, I call them urban photography with some architectural shots in the mix!

Love your video, very interesting and informative. I'm particularly interested capturing imagery on the subject, politics and culture of food, eating food, selling of, its packaging, places we eat, production and manufacturing, presentation, the pollution and commercialisation etc. Blows my mind!
