  • New York Times bestselling author Jim Butcher stops by Google to talk about his latest novel "The Aeronaut's Windlass."
Book description: Since time immemorial, the Spires have sheltered humanity, towering for miles over the mist-shrouded surface of the world. Within their halls, aristocratic houses have ruled for generations, developing scientific marvels, fostering trade alliances, and building fleets of airships to keep the peace.
Captain Grimm commands the merchant ship, Predator. Fiercely loyal to Spire Albion, he has taken their side in the cold war with Spire Aurora, disrupting the enemy’s shipping lines by attacking their cargo vessels. But when the Predator is severely damaged in combat, leaving captain and crew grounded, Grimm is offered a proposition from the Spirearch of Albion-to join a team of agents on a vital mission in exchange for fully restoring Predator to its fighting glory.
And even as Grimm undertakes this dangerous task, he will learn that the conflict between the Spires is merely a premonition of things to come. Humanity’s ancient enemy, silent for more than ten thousand years, has begun to stir once more. And death will follow in its wake…

Butcher is one of those guys that I enjoy hearing from or about in any shape or form, all the time. Futurama's technology to keep human heads alive forever needs to become reality, if only for Jim!

I love it that Jim Butcher uses his role playing games to help write his books. Makes me wish I was sitting at one of his tables as a Game Master.

@@BenDover-vg9ep yes the second book, according to Jim himself is nearly finished. He had to take a break from writing, because he didn't have a house for a few years I believe. That's why there was a hiatus with the Dresden Files books as well. I believe from what I've read, he is planning on writing one of the following books in the Cinder Spires series, between writing new Dresden Files books. This is what I've been able to piece together from things Jim has said in recent interviews, over the last few years.

"He's not so much her cat as she's his human." So it's pretty much exactly like real life.

I read "The Aeronaut's Windlass" twice in three days, and I really care about these character. It's written in thied person perspective, so you won't get quite the same thing as you will get out of the Dresden files. But....I am really looking forward to more of this series. Will probably make the last 4, 5, or 6 Dresden books longer to come out, but the change of pace for Jim, I think, will make the last Dresden novels better.
That's my take, and I can't wait for anything Jim writes.
Edit: One thing I forgot, this book has a feel like Quentin Tarantino movie: some things happen, lots of good things happen, someone dies, and things get real.

I'm reading this now, like it so far but I'm having trouble picturing the world a bit. It would be cool to see some fan art of the what the spires look like.
Love all of Jim Butcher's books!

for some reason I am having issues with that as well, which for the dresden files was never an issue. oh well I'm sure it's been brought to his attention & will be fixed for the rest of the series!

Loved the book! Now I'm starting The Dresden Files. Plus I really want him to write a historical fiction of the Roman empire. Since he's a buff of that time in history!

Sir I take exception to you calling Captain Grim a Pirate. He is a PRIVATEER. There is a difference. You are lucky he didn't hear you Mr. Butcher he might have demanded satisfaction!

I have to say that whenever I read a scene with the villainess, I pictured Missy from Doctor Who. I'm pretty sure he wrote the book before those episodes aired, but those characters are similar superficially anyway. and they both like it when people are polite. heh. I love the new series.
