Great content. Hit the nail right on the head! People are so judgemental. They look into their neighbors yard, without seen their own! Keep up the great work. I enjoyed.
The only thing I dislike about these companions I dislike about all companions... I shouldn't have to go through that intro quest on every character to unlock them for use.
Let's get this out of the way. Having a gay/lesbian/trans/non-binary character is not the problem. The problem is when being that, is their entire personality. That's annoying. Just have a character like this and give them an actual personality and make them cool and interesting characters and we have no problems. Don't preach at me, don't shove propaganda in my face. As long as you respect me, I'll respect you.
I do agree that presenting characters like that in this one dimensional thing is super counter productive. I like how normalised it is for tanlorin so I enjoy the integration
I tend to think like that too and I see some non-LGBT characters guilty of being one-dimensional too, it's not like it's only a problem that LGBT characters suffer from but it's one that a certain crowd only complains about when a LGBT character is guilty of it. Case in point, in my favorite series, legend of heroes, my least favorite character is non-LGBT and the entire personality is having a crush on their teacher for almost an entire game, I got legitimately exhausted by the end of the game. And in another one of the series, one of my favorite new additions was an LGBT character with such amazing writing, I loved it! Yet the former one generates a rabid fanbase...and the latter, well, not getting hate but not getting admiration either all that much, I don't get it...
13:06 I came from playing SWTOR. I always wish that ESO had the morality system and conversation options as SWTOR has. I love ESO (outside of Tales of Tribute), card games are not my thing. But a morality system would give me a reason to play more than just 1 character. If I could be evil, my Necro would be evil, and I would make a Templar that is only good... Or make a night blade that steals everything and only cares about what he gains.
Zerith-var story was INSANELY GOOD, shed a tear more than once, and he also has so many custom special interaction (for example there's a quest about his order in elsweyr, and they made custom secret lines of dialogue with him if you do the quest), the voice acting is PEAK and theres many plot that help deep dive into the relation between khajits and Azura. Tanlorin on the other hand, lack in good voice acting (which doesnt help), character design is ugly (purple noodle hair are not interesting or immersive), and the storyline is a MEH ok luckwarm wtv skip skip skip.
@@CasualLamer Zerith-var talk about love through time and space, life and death, is deeper. Also it explore more lore, why khajit only turn in dromathra? why Azura is the mother of the khajit? why they have different forms? Is necromancy always bad? Is more complex, more rich, that why.
@@CasualLamer Also, taamit is more than just friend, its more like a soul mate, he believe the very reason he came from his time was to start a new life with us and to learn forgiveness
I don't care about the gender stuff, like I would not intentionally misgender anyone , being in game or IRL, i am just not interested in that companion because they are a high elf, i do not find high elves interesting, khajiit is what ive always loved, i love cats irl, ive played khajiit in all TES games ive played, daggerfall, morrowind, oblivion, skyrim, eso. And for the folks that are mad about the gender thing, let me remind you that the daedric princes are genderless and can take any form.
I am conflicted, with my opinion around Tanlorin. On the one hand, I love that they represent a valued minority in humanity. On the other hand, they are a blatant political real-life insert, to make players think the devs are cool, modern, and open-minded. Yet, where does a non-binary character fit in an ancient fantasy setting? Nowhere. It just breaks the story and takes you out of the fun.
Does Tanlorin ever actually tell you that they are non-binary? Because so far, they have not mentioned it to me. As far as I can tell, the only reason we know their gender is because of the ZOS livestream and (apparently) their hairstyle?
@@CasualLamer All the companions are referred to as "they/them" in at least some parts of the UI. It has also become fairly common in English to use "they/them" instead of the more traditional "he or she" when the gender of the person is unknown. I have recruited Tanlorin. I have not completed all their quests. But so far, they have not mentioned pronouns to me at all. Nor have they mentioned their gender at all. Ironically, it seems to me that Tanlorin themself cares less about this argument than all the real people fighting over it on the Internet. Honestly, they seem a lot less open about their gender and orientation than Isobel from two years ago. But again, I have not completed their storyline yet. So maybe they mention it later? That is why I am asking.
Outside of community chatter I would not really have much idea about Tan being a 'they' because this is NEVER even hinted at. No where does Tanlorin even talk about it verbally or in a note. Magically everyone calls them 'them' and that's it. Never even asks you to to use that pronoun. The companion is woke clearly but its the most mild Zenimax could do with it.
The only problem i have with tamlorin is how they implemented them being non-bianary. I think this is the first non-bianary character in elder scrolls and they couldve done something with it by tying it with theyre attunement of soul magic where they, im just spitballing here, but they were kidnapped as a kid or whenever by a necromancer that made her into basically a human soul gem storing multiple souls and when they where freed of that and those souls were gone they kept all the emotions, thoughts, and preferences of those souls so thats why theyre non-bianary i think that would help the half of the playerbase that gets completely pulled out of the game by them while also representing the few non-bianary people who play eso Also the design of theyre hair is probably the stereotypical non-bianary person in most people's minds which probably made them get pulled out more by them
Agree with the stereotypical portrayal. And I also thought maybe they're bringing the non binary thing up in the story. When they didn't I later realised that it's kinda clever like this. Everybody is expecting it but by not doing it it's a "what did you expect? It's just a regular person" and that normalised it alot more imo
I have personally only 2 gripes with Tanlorin. 1. They're a bit too energetic for me. Sometimes I'm just chilling around and they are yelling out loud like "darn, it's not THAT exciting." 2. The story quest was too predictable. As soon as I knew what type of story type it was I was just guessing the plot points back to back. Zerith is probably my second favorite behind Sharp (because Sharp says "Skill Issue"). I just want the companion skill kit to be more thematic to being a necromancer. Some skills don't generate corpse when their player equivalent does and only 1 skill consumes and in general the generator/consuming skills don't fit into a single role. It'd be nice if each skill line focused on tanking, healing and damage had 1 skill that generates and 1 that consumes, then Zerith wouldn't be irrelevant in single target boss enemies when no corpses are naturally generated.
I agree but I think ZOS tries to keep the companion quests relatively short because they have to be repeated on each toon. If you only had to do the introductory quest once, even if the rapport quests had to be done individually, then they could add more to the intro to flesh out the story.
I like both companions. Just in the last few weeks I have maxed both level and rapport for each. Cool perks for both. Both stories are good with Zerith's 'out of time' more to my liking. Overall, I found Tanlorin to be more amusing (first time I heard Tanlorin's dialogs when looting a heavy sack and using Mage's Guild persuasion made me laugh). Tanlorin was remarkably easy for me to get to max rapport as well by using Soul Trap. I have moved on to level another companion, but I will circle back or use Tanlorin on one of my alts to hear the quips again. Ultimately - I would like to see more rapport building/losing options tied to conversations with the companions. That may not go over well with grinders, but maybe have the current rapport options but include more dialog impacts with cooldowns in between to represent personal growth and consideration. It may be too much programming, but I would have loved to RP more with both of the new companions.
My issue with both companions is that they had a such a freaking oppurtunity to make a high elf necromancer and they missed it. On a tenth anniversary of the game's release on that. And instead of a second Khajit companion I would prefer a wood elf one (as long as they didn't have Eveli's personality). That said I like Zerith-var, his voice, his story and his personality, perk is also nice. What annoys me about Tanlorin is making big deal out of nothing and marketing it as inclusive. Tanlorin never adresses it in any shape or form or even a whif of an allusion. You're being told that Tanlorin is a 'them' and that's it. Tanlorin's voice is grating, perk weak, personal quest all over the place and when it gets to a point of something one would be willing to get behind Tanlorin opts out of the organization. The most redeeming about Tanlorin as a companion is how disgustingly easy you can level up the rapport. Just take a couple of stacks of empty soul gems, slap any variation of the soul trap on your bar, park yourself at a dolmen and spam the soul trap while Tanlorin is your companion. You will be the best of friends long before you will unlock Tanlorin's skill bar. For me Tanlorin belongs with moral high ground twins.

The characters are fine. The way they were advertised was not. They both have a good story (though to me zerith’s is better). They both have good passives. Had they left the gender politics out of the advertising and not shoved zerith to the side there would’ve been no problems. Not once in tanlorin’s dialogue is gender in any capacity brought up and that’s fine cause we’ve seen it before with alchemy; a very popular character that as far as I can tell doesn’t have the stigma that tanlorin does for the simple fact that they weren’t advertised that way. In fact they weren’t advertised at all they were just there and they just are. Which is a staple theme of the elder scrolls. It’s there so it is.
Im nonbinary, and the only issue I had with Tanlorin was that their hair & overtly colorful styling felt really...cartoonish, immersion-breaky, and felt kind of weird in the way that a lot of corporate pandering and 'queerbaiting' often do. Sometimes I wish we could get some representation as the average people most of us are, rather than these "LOOK IM QUIRKY AND I WEAR PURPLE AND PINK AND HAVE DYED HAIR" stereotypes. But, its a minor complaint, and compared to no representation, I will take a little lite corporate pandering. Everyone whinging about the character simply existing really needs to get over themselves. Its literally optional content. If youre really so offended by it, dont play it! This is a game where people lust over cat folk lol The character themselves is great, though I enjoyed the Khajiits quest more, Tan seems like a lot of fun to drag around Tamriel. Anyway, good on you for standing by your convictions and making sure your platform is a safe place for people. I feel like its really important right now, especially for straight and cis folk, and especially men, in the gaming space to create a healthier culture and let bigots find the door.
Your use of the word safe makes me chuckle. Just because people like myself don't agree with the whole trans movement doesn't mean we wish anyone harm. Sorry for the rant. If what I said makes me a bigot then my bad.
It seems like you fallen into the trap of propagandists that claim teachers would "convert" children to be trans. But here is the kicker: Explaining the concept to kids doesn't make them trans. I know what gay people are and I'm still not gay.
