2:30 that's actually not quite true. All of these islands are written and pronounced with the "s" in Greek, just only in the nominative case. Modern Greek has four cases for nouns (forms that nouns take). So f.e. Naxos = nominative (who/what), Naxou = genitive (whose), Naxo = accusative (whom/where) and Naxo = vocative (when we call someone/ address something).

All true, but for foreigners let's make it easy, let's assume that when someone says I want to go to Paros, in Greece it will be (I want to go to) Paro, or : thelo na pao stin Paro, so in English you are correct, in Greek you are not, but you don't speak Greek.

As long as he was away from site downtown it's fine. We Greeks are not paranoid with law, We practice some times common sense. Although this most of the times is being taken advantage of and creates a bit of a chaotic society and a bit of over relaxed sensation in some cases where we shouldn't be over relaxed.. I studied there for 4 years to get my first degree of Ship's Captain. The oldest merchant marine academy in the world is on the island and you passed it....100 m from where you parked your bike.

The name of the island 'Hydra' does not differ from the Greek Ydra. The ancient Greek silent H was dropped and replaced by the apostrophe grammatical sign. They kept the initial H in the translation. The same is with Heraklion / Iraklion . The H is gone. Santorini (although it is called with this name in modern Greek) is from the Venetian name of the island (Santa Irene) . The original Greek name is Thera as you said. When people in Greece say where are you going this summer the response is Santorini 99% of the time and not Thera

the ancient Greek "H" was a breathing, so it was pronounced, otherwise it would be meaningless to have ever written it. The breathing was not written in ancient inscriptions (such as in stone), or in the manuscripts (such as parchment), it was 'understood' to be there. Writing of it is a relatively modern invention to make it clear where it was and was not pronounced.

@@MyMy-tv7fd Thats very true! 💯👍🏻Languages are organic & living & change with time. The Greek language is probably one of the oldest (if not oldest) living continuously spoken & documented languages on our great planet Earth, with 3,500 Years documented if you include Linear B. Dropped breathing, dropped digammas & Qoppas, dropped iotacisms…it happens! 😃

It’s also important to note that Santa or Santo is the Latin word for Saint (as opposed to the Greek: Agia & Agios).
Eirini or Irini (Irene…which means Peace in Greek) is the name of a Church found in Perissa Town on the island of Thera that probably gave the name of the current island: Agia Irini = Santa+Irini = Santorini
Some info I found online about the Church:
      👇🏻
At the northern end of the village of Perissa, at the foot of the peak of Mesa Vouno (365 m), there are unique archaeological excavations - the ruins of the church of St Irene from the 13th - 9th centuries AD. It is probably from it that the island of Santorini takes its name. During research work in 1992, it turned out that under the foundations of the church there is an even older monument - an early Christian basilica from the 5th-6th centuries AD.
Hope that helps people that were wondering about the name! 👍🏻

A few summers ago, my wife and I spent a very pleasant four days in Hydra.
Since we grew up with Leonard Cohen, for us this was "his island" so to speak. We went to his home in upper Hydra but it was closed. We also spent a little time in the Pirate Bar/Cafe in the harbor which he frequented. He lived in Hydra with Marianne Ihlen who inspired him to write "So Long Marianne". For anyone interested in this period on Hydra I recommend the book edited by Helle G. Goldman "When We Were Almost Young".
Also, I would highly recommend taking the full day boat sail around the island. The captain gave a nice explanation of the island as we sailed completely around it. We anchored in a few coves and had some lovely swims and the crew prepared a lovely fish lunch. Great day.

Hey Gabriel! Regarding the endings of greek island names that u mentioned... In greek language all nouns are inflected by gender, by plural and by case. U may not be familiar with the term cause u don't do that in English.
    We say for example:
    NAXOS is beautiful
    I'm going to NAXO
the beaches of NAXOU are nice
That's why u here it without the S sometimes

    Hello there !
The way a name of an island is changing is because of Greek grammar. When the name is the object in the sentence it has the s in the end like Paros, Naxos etc. When the name is the subject in the sentence it hasn't got the s and transfers in Paro, Naxo etc.
Example: Paros is a beautiful island.
Greek: Ee(article) Paros eene oreo nisi. But : I'll go to Paros tomorrow
Greek: Tha pao stin Paro avrio.

No Gabriel, we pronounce the s at the end when speaking in the nominative and vocative case, but the s goes away in the accusative case. eg: in the nominative "Naxos", in the general case "Naxou", in the accusative "Naxo" and the vocative "Naxos". I know the Greek language is difficult, but it has dynamics and describes exactly everything.

The "s" in the end of names is only pronounced in nominative. In accusative/dative/ablative, the final "s" gets removed. So for example: "Αυτή είναι η Τήνος (This is Tinos)" BUT "Πάω στην Τήνο (i'm going to Τinos)". The reason you get justifiably confused is because in English there is no real difference between the cases, as there is in Greek.

The sun of Apollo god is part of the exhibition of American artist Jeff Koons whoch is being held at the old Slaughter house. Such a beautiful small traditional island, totally different than the Aegean and Ionian islands! I am heading there in less than a week😊

In Greek you can put a sort of comma symbol on the first letter of a word , an aspirated consonant to be precise, that replaces the letter "H".

You deserve to live there Big Gabe. Why would you leave those islands? Is there a way you can live off your youtube royalties full time? I’m sure you can dial down an affordable spot full time. That place is literally like your personal playground.

I make a living from youtube so that isn't a problem, but there's the issue of the 90 days limit in the Schengen zone of Europe. Only 90 days allowed in all of western Europe and I want to visit other countries this summer. Plus the fact I just like to hop around and experience different places.

@@GabrielTravelerVideos yeah life in the states is so different. As smart as you are there’s literally no way you can get stuck in the nationalism of the USA…things will always inherently improve yet America violently sucked everyone into its conformity for the military pharmaceutical industrial complex, and there were always those like you who chose to think for yourself. There’s no one else as persistent as you, a modern global Jesus from the Cali hills! Unreal dude 🙏💪🔥🙌

@@GabrielTravelerVideos and wouldnt it also be that your audience expects international content or content from various different places around the world? I remember you saying that if you stay home for too long with your family and friends your views on youtube tend to go down which may be a problem as well. So moving around like this from country to country has become like a job for you in order to sustain the channel/views. What could be a solution to this? What if you decide to get a house someplace nice and make videos about your life there or from your home in california? Something like Jonna Jinton does, she very rarely travels. Her content is mostly about her life in the north of sweden with her dog, husband, family, friends and doing artistic things. But the thing is her audience expects such content and wants it. There are many other youtubers doing similar things, get a place somewhere and make videos about what its like to be there. Have you considered such a change in your youtube work/content in order to life a different kind of life? Could that be doable or how?

Gabriel it is the conjugation of verbs in Greek language, that eliminates the ending -s. It is Amorgos in nominative case but when using the word in accusative is Amorgo.

    Gabriel hello,
The nouns in Greek are conjugated also so if nominative case is used then we add an S at the end of tge word,if possessive case then we drop S at the end. That's why sometimes we pronounce the S at the end like Paros,Naxos etc and other times when we say 'of Paros' we drop the S.
    Keep on traveling!!!!

Hydra has the right idea! I wish my city would ban bikes too. Then, i wouldn't have to contend with all these thoughtless jerks almost running menover when they come from behind menon the sidewalk without giving any limd of heads up. The island looks gorgeous too! It must be so relaxing to travel around the town and not have to worry about traffic and the noise snd pollution they create?
