The best olive oil I ever had was when I was visiting my cousins in Italy and one of my cousins had just pressed olives. The olive oil wasn’t even an hour old. Nothing I have tried since then comes close to the taste, the smell and even the look of that olive oil.

    • @hannibot

I live in Greece so I am spoiled with amazing olive oils everywhere. However, a cousin of mine decided to try growing olives to make a very high quality olive oil and has a Chemistry background so went deep into how to create the most flavorful olive oil. Surprisingly, the process went against what most greek farmers were doing ( collecting olives when they are still green, processing them the same day they were collected etc). Oh my God, the taste of this olive oil is like nothing I ever had until then. Super complex, peppery but also bright, fruity but also earthy. It was out of this world. I was so spoiled. Unfortunately my cousin stopped producing it because he was struggling with the business aspect of this and now nothing compares to the taste of that olive oil.

The best olive oil I ever tasted came from Spain. They were friends of ours and produced it themselves in fairly large amounts. They also sold cans of olives filled with fish paste. Unfortunately, they sold their business several years ago, and we haven't found an olive oil, that even comes close. When you started the video, I had concerns. The idea of this much oil.. oof.
Easily more than a cup full of oil.. I wonder had you tried using it like a dip.. if that would of helped..
Another suggestion, for taste testing.. if you don't need to do them all blind.. You can have a Control to start with.. then go thru them with the Control tossed in. To see if you can pick out the control.. but also to give you a baseline to judge others by.
My guess is tho, some olive oils might pair better with certain things than others.. Some things have nice accenting flavors for a pasta, that might be less good with a salad etc..

This is a tough match for the Italian bottles because they had to survive shipment, God knows if some of these bottles sat in the sun or had other harsh conditions that alters flavors/quality. If you live in Australia the oil won't be traveling far to reach your home and will retain better quality!
I live in Canada and we have olive oil from all over the word and Italian does not disappoint despite how far all these bottles have to travel, nice to see Australia has some legit olive oil, we do not have those here.

If it was an RPG video game you will ahve in rules somthing like this:

Fresh oil makes a huge difference. Trouble is, places which are far from the olives have to have aged oils. That being said, when cooking the oil it is not the same as just sprinkling it on a salad.
You want to do another blind test? Flour would be the obvious choice, but it would need someone to make it. Obviously home-made orzo with just flour and water cooked in the same water/broth and then tasted. A little more involved but it should be easy enough to be objective then.

An interesting blind tasting and even more so that the Spanish oil rated so high, given that so many foodies seem to rubbish Spanish extra virgin olive oil. From my own perspective I find it an interesting challenge. Currently I am cooking with a Greek Extra Virgin Olive oil, Lyrakis family Classic with an intensity rating of 3 (whatever that might mean). This particular brand has won a couple of silver medals at the New York International Olive Oil competition (2014 and 2016). The oil comes from Crete. I must admit I rarely buy Aus Extra Virgin Olive oil, and generally buy Greek extra virgin or one of the Italian brands. Having travelled across France, Italy, Spain, Greece and Morocco, from my experience Morrocan extra virgin olive oil was fantastic but I doubt you can buy it here in Aus.

vincenzo the olive oil in italy is tousands and tousands of variety for "cultivar" for terrain every one taste different.. to me looks like you have more variations than in wine tasting..
I live actualy in Sardinia here you may found even small production of "monocultivar" olive oil from the "bosana" olive to the "nera di Gonnos" (just to name two of these) some small factories produces these home made (fantastic) oil made of a single type of olive (not blended) of course you have to find it in the villages.. but this is really what you want to be happy with your oil.. and here i'm only talking about Sardinia if you are talking about the whole italy you end up with tousands of different flavours.. sincerly as italian I cannot say here (and I think no one can) where the best olive oil is.. but I know for sure that you cannot find the same richness in any contry of the world.
