I remember seeing him the 70's when my parents "dragged" me to his shows during the summer outdoor events. I am thankful they did as watching this has borought back many memories of his great music. I now play it here for friends in my bar and enjoy having the young folks appreciate it n this day. Just takes a few songs and they are hooked to the greatness of this type music and what it meant to America at the time.
The showmanship of Hampton and his band is incredible! I assume these clips were produced for "shorts" at movie theaters. Their live shows in small venues must've been amazing!
I tuned into this video particularly to see if Wes Montgomery showed up in it. He does. Who in 1949 would have imagined the young man playing guitar in Hampton's orchestra would go on to become the world's finest and most original jazz guitarist?
Edie Lang and Charlie Christian and Grant Green are jazz guitarist that have been written out of history! Wes gained popularity through its style of octaves and a style that has out lasted its usefulness and makes too much jazz guitarists sound just alike!
@@haywardmccullough2762 Eddie Lang and Charlie Christian certainly haven’t been written out of jazz history. Grant Green was under appreciated during his lifetime but is now widely celebrated.
Outstanding short. Who IS the excellent tap dancer...the blues singer, the hilarious guy in drag, the adorable swingin' little kids? Glad to know the woman scat/bop singer is Betty Carter. What a band and Hampton's vibes. Thank you for posting this treasure.
I heard LH band in Stockholm concert hall 1954 and on with new members every year. The whole band moved around the hall playing 😅and singing as a show gimmick! ❤Curly Hamner drummer together with Lionel Hampton! 14:32
Oh, Lord, what a show! I just came here to see young Betty Carter (evidently Hampton fired her 7 times in about 2 years -- she had a mind of her own) but this whole show is incredible and I have only seen some snippets of it so far. Hampton doin a million things, Wes Montgomery, Curly Hamner, Sonny Parker and Betty Carter, and those two tiny kids!!
That's a really big band! I wonder how much each band member was paid. Hamp had to be making a whole lot of money to be able to afford to pay all those guys!
Seeing young Betty Carter and Wes Montgomery at the start of their careers with Hamp is a treat!
I SO wish l was a young man in those days, racism no withstanding. LOVE this music.

WOW!! Respect for Hampton (and band and soloists & dancers) has jst gone up 1,000,000,000 % !!!!!!!!!!!
Also the first and only footage, to my knowledge ,where you see Wes playing in a standing position.By the way, that solo is a killa!
That was insane. Musicianship of the highest caliber.

Good catch. His characteristic thumb picking is very clearly shown.

Yes, a very young Wes at 2:05!
It might be the earliest video footage of Wes still available today. Really amazing stuff!
And using that signature technique of plucking the strings with his thumb instead of using the standard pick.
I love me some Lionel Hampton 🥰❤️🖤💚and his wife/manager Gladys 🥰❤️🖤💚

@@MissCroft2006 The only song I know in this short is Hamp's Gumbo which is the second-to-last song in the short film.
Cute kids at the end.
What os the mame of the song at 7:20?
1. Air Mail Special/2.Robbins Nest/ 3. Hamp's Gumbo....not sure of the last tune.

Indeed you have to wonder how much they paid all those guys in the big band era. We're talking a 20+ piece orchestra, plus vocalists and dancers.
This clip defies description.
America has been very ungrateful. This music build American music
Hamp also discovered Dinah Washington
Am I trippin or is that an Asian bone player at 11:22?
Yep, Japanese-American Paul Lee Higaki (sometimes known as "Murphy the Irishman"(?)
