Hey guys, if it wasn’t obvious - I was being ironic when I said “don’t watch pickleball.” That comment was directed to those who have a problem with my split stepping.

I'll say this about the split step: Look through history at the greatest in any sport, they ALL have some kind of unique/distinct thing/mannerism/style/speech/etc that allows people to do impersonations of them. I could say it looks annoying how JW Johnson stands upright and has overall bad positioning but clearly it works for him. Your stepping works for you. People could say Ben Johns doesnt show enough emotion, but that works for him. People might say ALW takes too many backhand poaches, it works for her. McGuffin's serves are distinct, but it works for him. Daescu's paddle looks weird, it works for him. AB twirls her paddle before a serve, it's her thing, who cares. AB and RR cheer loudly after every point, that's their thing. Same goes for all sports.
It's also a massive lack of self-awareness for people to see you in person and tell you they don't like a way that you play

I agree with everything works for everyone except for the McGuffin serve. It does not work for him as evidenced by the fact the PPA made a rule to nullify his illegal serve, on how you have to drop it below the waist.

Great showing to the finals. You’ve beaten them before, and you definitely beat them that third game gong 11-0. Only criticism is I think your girlfriend’s body language needs to get better…. Every shot you miss she just goes “Ugggggghhhh” non-verbally. Where as you’re super supportive whenever she makes an error. Keep playing tough man, hope your shoulder is better, and I think you’ll be getting gold more and more real soon. God bless.

Prediction... after the 2 handed backhand ATP more people will start doing a 1 handed off hand ATP. We are basically training our off hand with our 2 handed backhand work... Doesn't little Jacky Munro do one now and then?

Do what u want but ask if split stepping constantly is efficient? Efficient mean u are optimizing ur energy which is limited so in the long term there will be benefits.

The idea that the two handed backhand is the way because it is easiest to master is as erroneous as believing that bopping up and down like a pogo stick is the way to stay sharp and alert. It’s actually the opposite. It takes a bit longer to master, granted…

If it works for you great. The problem is you’re not on the tennis court. You literally have to cover 10 to 15 feet of the court and all that unnecessary movement creates imbalance. That’s the issue. Because you’re young and have fast reflexes you’re able to adapt to all this unnecessary movement. It’s just frenetic and if you watch Ben play, he is an economy of motion and I think you would benefit from doing the same but again you had great success doing it the way you do so no need to stop.

Your serving tips are 100% correct. I had this same conversation with Tyson(which he discounted) regarding of using weight transfer in a stride when you serve to optimize power. Think of a pitcher in baseball, they just don’t stand on the mountain and throw with all arms. They use for momentum and stride which incorporates the legs, hips rotation to maximum effect to create the most powerful movement. Great tip! I think a lot of players that come from tennis are so used to keeping their feet together and not sting when they serve try to incorporate the same mechanics in serving which is not the most efficient effective way to create power

Why is it important to have a big ass microphone taking up half the screen??? It's the content of what you're saying that's important and not the lack of "visual representation" (whatever the hell that means!). Your analysis of the game is excellent so don't sweat the superficial stuff.

I'm watching pickleball because I broke my right leg in two places in September, and then tore the meniscus in my left knee while on crutches from the broken right leg, just had surgery last week. Mental pickleball reps are better than no pickleball reps. As a general rule it's probably not a great idea to criticize your fans for watching you.
Also James you are definitely one of my favorite players to watch, so explosive and aggressive, very entertaining.

I thought it was ez to tell that he was referring to the ppl that watch him and then tell him how to move or not move. No way he would be rude to his ppl. The ones that watch him at PPA and pods and KNOW how nice he is. Maybe I’m special but I KNOW he wasn’t talking to me.

I really like James. I think he’ll be the best player in the sport within a year but I thought the comment came across poorly. I suspect athletes in many sports look down on the fans, but you can’t verbalize it.
