Don Olsen originally assembled the films for these programs - first produced in 1992, and now re-issued and substantially upgraded in a two-volume set in wide screen format with stereo sound. Historians and author Ted Benson, Wayne Monger and Evan Werkema assisted in the research necessary to bring the new versions to fruition.
Volume One: History of the Railroad, all types of Steam from diminutive 2-8-0s to the huge 251 class articulateds, building the Northern California Extension, snow fighting, wrecks, first generation diesels, MOW equipment and the maritime fleet.

Still have two copies of this on VHS. A fantastic look at the past. New remastered footage looks great!
I really enjoy seeing footage of the Western Pacific rr 251 class 2-8-8-2 locomotives, they are an impressive class of articulated steam power and are among my favorite types of 2-8-8-2 class steam engines.

Their rare ones alright. I'm happy that there's an SP copy of one preserved in St Louis.
I have the original VHS tape, but i t looks like I'm gonna have to new these new DVDs. If you're a WP fan, this is a must buy.
I'll be bringing WP Volume One out on Blu Ray in March at Winterail, along with SP Vol 5 and West Coast Railroad logging. There seems to be demand for higher quality.

I pleaded with Don Olsen many times to put the WP movie out on DVD. I'm happy to see it happening -- with new material and interviews, even. Thanks for doing this!

Hi John. it was a lot of work, and I had a hell of a time getting it done. The original 1: video master had to be baked because the lubrication had dried out. I don't know if you understand this, but certain brands of old tape dry out and the only way you can play them is bake them at 150 degrees for 4 hours, then you get one or two plays. I am very happy with the results. Thanks for the support.
That's amazing about baking tapes. I had never heard of that. I'm glad you were able to rescue the tape. Can't wait to see it.

does this have any footage of M100 challengers or M80 2-6-6-2's ?
No footage of the M100's, but yes on the 2-6-6-2's. As to whether they are M80, I am sorry but I can't say.
