1. How they are very few good footballers and good football matches . 2. Surprised by how awful the European game is compared to AFCON 3. England are terrible because Smellingham is overrated as if Foden and they don't have a playmaker.
1. The importance of constantly moving when attacking. 2. Why has no one gone for Mamardashvili when he's arguably a better goalkeeper than Donnarumma? 3. Defensively decent, but too fearful and static in attack. Tie into number 1, they look very rigid in position when attacking, no runs being made so there's no plan of attack, gives time to recover for defending team.
I want to talk about the mentalness of the fandom. Every game we have a new scapegoat. Game 1 was Trent. Game 2 was Foden and Kane. Game 3 was Bellingham. The last two tournaments it was legitimate to criticize the squad selection. The squad was picked on reputation and experience rather than form. This time Southgate should be praised for taking risks. I don't think blaming individuals off the back of 1 or 2 games is sane behaviour. What's surprised me is just how bad England have been. No energy, no desire, no fight. They don't look like they have a second gear let alone running through all the gears needed to win it. The Slovenia game was painful.
Ouch. As a fan of Croatia, I can understand the pain the Scots are feeling. I can assure you a little bit of both countries died out there on the pitch in the last minute of each of their last games. 😢
As much as I agree with nearly everyone else in the comments, I love this trio. No matter what form they make content in I will watch and throughly enjoy. Thank you guys 🩵
I missed the whole Tifo videos /podcasts which by all accounts was a great eh thing....these videos aee great but quite short. I hope there will be more from the guys. Its great fun and very insightful
Spain from this euro reminds me of Man Utd under Sir Alex. Very diverse in terms of different modes of attacking play... Sometimes very direct or very possession based by breaking the defensive lane quickly using 3rd man release and fast vertical passing...
Football punditry and commentary is about a variable balance of expertise and personality - can have more of one and less of the other, but it's always a balance. It's the backbone of Match of the Day, MNF and the best stuff the athletic put out. The Tifo boys are the *absolute* perfect blend on this front, and it is so good to see you guys making stuff together again. Jon/Seb give detailed nerdy stuff, JJ and Reuben make it fun, and Joe is there to make jokes about skeletons if it gets too complicated. Bring it back lads, you know you want to.
I really want to talk about how much more fun it's been to see the "smaller" teams face each other and give it their all than it's been watching the "big" teams struggle to get anything done. What's surprized me is Austria actually living up to its dark horse status so far. Usually, the team predicted by most to be the dark horse going in to the tournament (Turkey 2020, Denmark 2022) fails to deliver on that status. England has been woeful, but in the somewhat defensively assured way that I (not being English) worry they're going to have a Portugal 2016-type run and ruin this exciting tournament with their boredom. Especially now that they've once again fluked their way into what should on paper be an easy run to the final. The same worry applies to France, except of course that they're running the gauntlet in the knock-outs, but that means they might break our hearts time and time again.
Best games so far from memory have been Turkey-Georgia, Croatia-Albania, Netherlands-Austria, Switzerland-Hungary and probably another obvious one i'm forgetting. Aside from Spain and Germany (and Portugal in the first two games) - really been disappointed with the showing from the "favourite" countries so far.
I'm of the opinion England's so called "fans" and media don't deserve squat... the arrogance the entitlement I now see what other countries have been seeing for years... I'd just as well see England quit international football...I think we'd all enjoy the tournaments better...
Great analysis as always. You guys should do some analysis of a standout historical team, like the Brazil 86 World Cup team for example. It would be fascinating to see how great teams of the past compare to today's teams.
It taught us that mediocre players can make very good team and the great players can make a crap team. That even at this high level motivation and energy can trump skill.
Spain play a little bit like Klopp’s Liverpool last season. They want to build up through short passes but are not afraid to go direct either, often pushing back opposition defences with the likes of Salah, Diaz, Nunez and then creating space for the likes of Mac Allister. The variation in play seems to work better in knockout tournaments but as we saw during the season not so much in a league format.
Yes great comparison. I just fear this Spanish side won't be able to make do when they face France. They slow the game down so much and really control it.
The Scotland thing is very simple: there is nothing up front. It's easy for the opponent to apply pressure when they know they will not be turned. Scotland not only lack quality up front, but numbers too. No way could they play up with combinations. Play to who? Georgia, Slovenia, even Albania...almost all of these teams have some pace and/or quality up front.
Please please do the daily podcasts (livestream at the end of the day after all the matches are over) again for the round of 16 onwards! Points are bad 4 life!
With Guehi banned from next match, Foden gone home, and Trippier injured, it will be interesting to see what they do. I suggest Gomez LB or go to back 3.
I think one thing you guys didn’t acknowledge when you were talking about France is that they build their team around Mbappe. Yes they try and make it more than the sum of the parts, but that’s because there is a clear structure to have Mbappe as the focal point. What would be really interesting is to get your views on who this England team should be built around and how you would do it. I know you did talk about it a little bit but I feel like that’s a huge topic! Personally, I’m not convinced by Foden for tournament football. I think Bellingham and Kane make more sense. We had Kane for the 2018/20/22 tournaments and it was effective. Plus prioritising those two might be complementary as Bellingham can crash the box whilst Kane pulls deep like he likes to do. Then you have Gordon and Saka on either side.
The last euros coverage podcasts on Tito irl were amazing. Bring back Iain Macintosh and also idk maybe start having fun again. Feels so much less fun than it used to be
Im an ENG fan but when i saw Spain at +750 (bet 1 win 7.50) where ENG/FRA/GER/POR at +300 to +450 so i put some money down on Spain to win it all, if it comes home i dont care about losing ANY amount but if we crash out atleast i can follow spain and win some money haha
One thing you really want to talk about - Austria, Romania, Gerogia (overperformers) vs Portugal, Beligum, England, France (underperformers) & team of the group stage One thing that has surprised you, positively or negatively - Gerogia was the biggest shock. The way they play is just very reminissant of a great total football side (in possession) Out of possesion they defend in numbers and with passion. Your England audit - They suck and its not coming home.
Could somebody please send the segment about Spain's use of Nico Williams to Gareth Southgate and hopefully the penny might drop that he could use Anthony Gordon in a similar role
Look at Ericson's three quarter finals in a row. Regardless of whether or not they should have done better, look at all the misfortunes. 2002. Pre tournament injuries to Gerrard and Neville. Beckham broke his metatarsal in April ( is that why he bottled it for Brazil's equaliser?) 04. No Rio due to the drugs test thing. Rooney breaking his foot against Portugal. Campbell's perfectly good goal being disallowed. 06. Rooney injured before the tournament. Owen limping out during the group stage. Beckham went off early during Portugal game, before Rooney followed him for the stamping. Bobby Robson, Hoddle and Fabio could point to similar moments. Southgate has suffered no significant injuries (depending on your view of McGuire), no sending offs, no dodgy refereeing decisions. In 4 tournaments!! I'm standing next to that man in an electric storm!!
Clarke out now! Two tournaments in a row his team have completely shat the bed in the same way: got blown away in the first game, gave a spirited performance in the second game, earning a draw against superior opposition, then in the third and final game - which was a must-win - they offer next to nothing. He hasn't made any improvements at all. The team haven't learned a damn thing. Time to hang it up Steve, you're done!
Agree about Bellingham. I thought he was getting in the way against Serbia. I would drop him and play Foden at 10, Gordon left wing. Forget Serbia and Denmark. England were good in the second half against Slovenia and I don't see why they won't build on that.
I'm sorry but can someone check the stats on how many touches McTomminay had in all 3 games? It had to be less than the average player has in 45 minutes. My worst player of the tournament. And I like him!
Started with "Thank you for being here"... finished with "what are we doing here" .. those dreadful unbalanced England performances really have left everyone all confused. 😂 Enjoyed the Spain's great breakdown vs Scotland were bad breakdown. Just goes to show the team identity out of possession defensive low block vs high pressing or in possession counterattacking vs build up play, overloads etc. rigid vs fluid tactical structures are only further enhanced with squad talent, depth and team culture. The overall playstyle and quality of their wingers for a team like Spain (Nico Williams and Yamine Lamal) really does influence outcomes with a more vertical approach combined with positional play attacking 1v1 on the dribble or drawing defenders in to open space elsewhere. Spain can also revert to times possession based football during the build up when they need to. Looking forward to the semi final showdown with France

The lack of daily EURO streams from Tifo has been a big disappointment. It was a key part of my EURO 2020 and World Cup 2022 schedule.
