  • Throughout history the Whanganui River has been an accessway to the Central North Island.
    Prior to the completion of State Highway 43 (The Forgotten W0rld Highway) and the Stratford-Okahukura railwayline (see beyond the highway 1), the Whanganui River provided vital access to the settlements, transporting everything from the early settlers to cattle, wool and other traded commodities.

    How lovely to see you on the Waimarie , one of our favorite things to do when we visit from the UK. Our son now lives overlooking the awa and often waves to the people on the boat as they go by! Keep on exploring the 'road less travelled' and recording it! Good luck! Julia in Cornwall

      It’s funny, I watch it almost everyday from work and just happened to have the opportunity to go for a cruise. Was too good of an opportunity to not share this part of the story
