That’s usually how the second child is treated. The first is the favourite and most perfect, second is the troublemaker who can’t do anything right and if there is a third child then that is the most pampered one. And this is according to parents.

My favourite part of this episode, Monica telling Pheobe to be her self, Pheobe telling them that the parents live on 5th avenue, and Rachel going "oh no she can't be herself" 😂

There were laughs because the jokes were good, but dang..., it really did start to bother me how her parents treated her so differently than her brother. It was pretty f'ed up.
After watching the show for so many years the jokes stop being funny and start being hurtful. I agree with you. You actually start to feel bad for her. She went through a lot and ended up being the best version of herself. I'm so happy for her.
If you remove the laugh track from friends it becomes this awkward show about the most toxic friend group ever. No one laughs at Chandlers jokes and they spend an uncomfortable amout of time awkwardly staring at one another.

One of the reasons I loved Monica so much was because despite her always being put second against Ross, she treated her parents with a lot more respect then I would have in her situation.
I forgot for a second that Ross' mom is also Monica's mom.

The comment her mom made is really sad because unfortunately I know a lot of mothers who are actually like this... they treat their dirty-bootied sons like they could do no wrong, and treat their daughters like absolute shit.
One of my friend's mom is like this. My friend's drug dealing, no-job-havin', broke, dirty-bootied brother ROBBED their mom blind for drug money. Stole computers, TVs, whatever he could find to sell. Her mom didn't say a SINGLE thing to him, just let it go. But then for w/e reason felt the need to tell her (my friend) that if SHE ever did anything like that, she shouldn't bother ever coming home again because she'd disown her.

Uhm??? Mind you, they were both adults and still living with their mom at the time. My friend paid rent and cooked for the family. Her brother didn't pay a dime and later brought his baby momma in to live with his mom too. 🙄

I think there were 2 main reasons why Monica's mom was like this to her.
1) Ross being the "miracle child". I mean she thought she was barren and then had a son so der had a soft corner for him.
2) I don't remember which episode but Monica's mom once said that her mother was very critical with her. So she always thought that's the way to raise a daughter. You have to be overly critical about everything.
However, given all of that, the fact that she sometimes just ignores her existence is not acceptable :(
