I was always know as just a heavy drinker but that's Ireland for you. 4 years ago I hit rock bottom. A litre and a half of vodka a day. Couldn't eat, walk, stand or tell the difference of what was reality and what was not. I was weeks away from dying. I'll be sober 4 years in February and I don't miss alcohol at all. Unfortunately when I stopped drinking I lost 99 percent of my friends. I do get very lonely as I thought when I quit drinking my life would be amazing. I'm happy I'm alive and well, I'll be 50 in March and my friend wants me to go on holiday to celebrate but I always associated my holidays with boozing so I don't know what to do. Anyone who is struggling with the decision to stop drinking or not, do it. No harm in stopping, you will feel much better and if you don't have a problem you can start again anyway. I wish you the best of luck, God bless xx

I just got back from my first alcohol-free, drug-free vacation in 48 years. I went by myself. If I felt tired and/or overwhelmed, I went into my hotel room and relaxed with some drawing materials or some reading. A very boozy party was going on in the courtyard of my hotel one night, and the noisy drunken idiots made me glad I wasn’t one of them. I went out for a walk on the beach, and bought some earplugs before I went back to my room. I went for many long walks. It wasn’t exciting, but it was relaxing - and I had interesting conversations with strangers, without being a drunken bore. My sister has been wanting to go on vacation with me for awhile, and now I feel ready to do that after my successful week vacationing on my own. Maybe it’s counterintuitive, to be by oneself, but it worked for me.

I know what you mean. It gets to where no day is normal. Every day is a hangover but as you keep drinking, hangovers become normal and you gaze off into the distance some mornings, wondering what a normal day is anymore. It's a living hell.

Ha ha. You my comrade sound like my twin)) After lots of warnings I flatlined my way to hospital and was nearly Switched off(( But now have great fun doing stuff. I mostly drank alone so didn't really lose friends. My family are very happy with me now. Being able to do stuff at any time makes me feel great. I do avoid pubs etc but not cos there is alcohol but to avoid the shitetalk. Jesus my friends talk so much crap when drunk and repeat the same old storys again and again. Onwards and upwards lad))))

Last Christmas holiday I spent the first half drinking and said ‘I ain’t doing this again’. New Year’s Eve I had my last drink and that was it. Dry since. It was interesting to reflect on getting up in the morning, recover, do something, then crack open the first drink mid afternoon. Drink in the evening. Repeat. Not cool. Nice one, Steve!
Reminds me of my "holiday" in Latvia eight year ago, shortly after being made redundant. The drinking began at the airport and stopped only when I was sleeping. On the first morning all I could think about was getting a drink just to feel "normal", knowing that my female companion was planning to take me on a tour or Riga later in the day (and wondering how I was going to get through it). I became increasingly anxious and paranoid as the holiday went on - not helped by an encounter with an over-friendly Russian restaraunt owner who insisted on pouring me beers and vodkas like they were going out of fashion. The low point came during a sleepless night while being practically eaten alive by mosquitos. I got up to use the toilet and found my female companion's phone charging in the living room. My paranoia and delusions had reached such a point that I took the phone to the loo with me and went through all of her messages to see who she was talking to and what she was saying about me. When I came out, to my horror, there she was, standing in the living room asking if I had seen her missing phone. While I thought she wasn't looking I whipped it out of my pocket, placed it on a chair and pretended to find it - but she wasn't stupid and had seen exactly what I done. To cut a long story short, that was the last time I ever saw her. I spent the last day of my "holiday" wandering the streets of Riga on my own, necking huge glasses of vodka with random alcoholics - including a truck driver from Belarus who had caught his wife in a compromising situation with his best friend. The flight home the next morning was possibly the worst experience of my life - hungover, exhausted, raw with mosquito bites and full of remorse for violating my friend's trust.
Like you, I can look back now and laugh. I think that's one of the best things about going alcohol free: beng able to reflect on those dark times from a much better place, knowing that life will probably never be that bad again. :-)

@@davidmt23 I remember going to watch Leeds V Arsenal 1997. My mate was in the Arsenal end and when we met up after the match I was winding him up because Leeds won 3-0. My mate asked "what am I on about?" The match finished 0-0. Gawd knows what the Leeds fans thought of me dancing a jig in the stands? Night before match I stayed up all night drinking, took the bus from London to Leeds with 20 odd cans of Guinness. Drank another 6 pints in 20 minutes before the match in a pub outside the ground (Old Peacock). I finally quit the booze 2018 because I hated myself so much. I'm never going back.

Just make a plan, I think mine was over 3 weeks, and do calculated reduction. I remember cheating sometimes, saving 2 daytime rations so I could have 3 in evening.🤣 I wouldn't recommend waiting for a total collapse like I did, but it really put the fear of god in me and does give me incentive to stay sober, I have no desire to go through that movie again. I started out getting drunk every night. That turned into getting drunk *120 nights in a row.* Because I was sober all day, from about 10am to 6pm, I thought I'm not an alcoholic. The thing is from 6pm to 2 am drinking, I have no recollection of what I was doing between those hours. I knew it was becoming an issue when I started wanting a drink earlier and earlier. Luckily I actually didn't let it take over and I never had a drink before 6pm. Even so, I was drinking every night, not just a few drinks but 1.5 to 2 bottles of wine - every night - for months on end. Keep an eye on yourself.

I once travelled alone for work, from East to West, West to North West, and back again across Australia. My 10day round trip by long haul flights, and train, staying in out of the outback townships was during a complete blackout relapse. The distance travelled was 18,000km and the only thing that I clearly remember was getting on the plane at the beginning of the trip and being hauled out of a hotel by security, thrown into a taxi to the airport in Adelaide. Spending a stopover in the Melbourne Airport Terminal for seven long painful hours. It was late when I landed and far too late for any bars etc. to be open. I huddled up on the floor with my backpack under my head, shaking, sweating, dry retching and in the most hellish of horrors. I have been sober now for two years and pray to God everyday that it stays that way. Life without the anguish, the shame, the fear and self loathing is so much more peaceful. Waking up sober, it never gets old. Gratitude and humility will stay me till the end of my days. Good luck to everyone out there on their journey. Thankyou Steven for your service and dedication to help others in need.
Even the magnificent train trip across the Nullarbor Plane went by in absolute drunken oblivion. I managed to complete my assignment successfully (God knows how). I only know this because my boss called when I got home to tell me that I had done a great job. And that’s actually the terrifying part of the story. To be able to operate in an extremely altered reality and then remember very little when I sobered up.

Hi Steve, fellow Geordie here - Well done mate and great to see how you've turned your life around, great videos and keep them coming!
I holiday in the Caribbean each year and fortunate enough to fly in Business Class on long-haul, for me it was about getting through security at Newcastle Airport into the Aspire lounge as early as possible, drink as much as possible before the short hop to Heathrow then getting through as much Champagne on the 1 hour flight then hitting the BA lounge at Terminal 5 for a few hours before the 9 hour flight over to the Island.
Normally we stay in the adult only all-inclusive resorts where you can get a drink at 10am by the pool or on the beach, then head into the town and drink all day and back to the resort to drink all night - It became a routine and a goal to reach every time I went away on holiday.
I have always drank in social situations, I'm 43 now and went through a horrible divorce recently and lost my driving licence last year all through binge drinking, it has ruined my life and relationships in so many ways.
I decided I wanted to lose weight in September following two amazing holidays in the summer, I weighed in at 280lb, so I started doing the Keto diet on the 1st of October this year and had my last drink on the 30th of September, not had a drink since and to be honest not missing it - I've lost 22lb in body fat and saved so much money too.
I said to myself that I will keep away from alcohol going forward, the true test will be my next business trip or next holiday, however since getting my driving licence back and being a complete petrol head who loves his cars, I realised how important and valuable my licence is and I think that is motivation for me to keep away from that poison, alcohol, which means I can enjoy my car anytime of the day, without the stress of being over the legal limit again.
Admitting to yourself that you have a problem is the first step, but people in a similar boat always use the same line - "I'm not an alcoholic" and other excuses to convince ourselves that it’s okay to carry on.
I used drink as a crutch to deal with stress, business related and personal issues and unfortunately when you associate with other people who are heavy drinkers, they become enablers and are not good folk to be around so I've had to sever ties with many people who would encourage my behaviour.
I plan to move on with my life and improve it, if that means people are left behind as I branch off in a different direction then so be it - Remember, positivity breeds positive outcomes, ergo Negativity breeds negative outcomes.
    Cheers Rob.

He is the most boring person on this platform! Only on here to make money - always replies with telling them to subscribe - he is boring enough to make you want to commit suicide!

Funny my cousin is on holiday here this week & she told me that because their hotel 🏩 is all inclusive- drinks meals free some folks sit drinking ALL day Just because its free 🍷😨maybe hotels doing full board should have a 4 drink limit daily- but then it seems like you are treating folks like children 🤔

@@stevencurry215 I have been here since August 2020- it is very nice relaxed way of life here people V friendly. Can sit around in sunny cafes & socialize with a coffee in afternoon so less temptation to drink than there is in English pubs on cold afternoons! The only problem is that after Brexit it is V hard to get permission to work- you need residencia which you can only get living here 3 years continuously. I was lucky I own a house in Biggin Hill mainly from inheritance that I have rented out to a polish family & i can get by as rents on flats are cheaper here- though even they are more expensive now with the tourist lets & AirB&B controversy; my landlord doesnt put my rent up much as i dont give him any hassle. I was in the Met police for 5 years a prison officer before that & a postman before that. I was sacked from the Met as i said something nonPC: "Narcissistic attention seeking " & "the taxpayer shouldn't fund virtue signalling" about police marching on gay pride parades & clicked like on the Right wing group Traditional Britain on facebook which a grass Paul Blewer screenshotted to the DPS. Rather than just bollock me & tell me to delete my facebook they are so fanatically PC I was on full pay on restricted duty a year then suspended another year with them hoping I would resign- which I refused to do; so i had a hearing & was sacked. I'll bet the Met was a lot different when you were in back in the day- I was Westminster borough- mainly belgravia & charingX police station; if u ever worked there. Well done with u videos Im sure they help many people.
