I began medical school at UTHSC in Memphis in September 1971. There was no White Coat Ceremony at that time. After our third term, we were told to go to some some local uniform shop, purchase white coats, and have our names stitched on them before we entered the clinical clerkships in the fourth term. There was no ceremony at that time, either. The medical school seems to have instituted a bit more pomp and circumstance to make training there more pleasant.
