  • Is it safe to use travel adapters? Travel adapters are often used but these devices can be dangerous. These devices often do not take into account polarity and grounding making them both hazardous to people and can pose fire and leakage current hazards. By eliminating the ground prong of an electrical device you remove one of the best safeguards for electrical safety.
Travel adapters can be cheap solutions to using devices they do pose hazards and risks and we warn you about them in this video. They can be used for certain devices (such as non polar power bricks that are not grounded (such as an iPad charger). These devices can also throw off GFCI protections and other electrical protections and safety concerns.

For further note: plugging the three-prong plug in upside-down can, with some power supply designs, cause the exposed earth pin to become live. Also, plugging one pin in to live while leaving the other pin outside the device can cause power to flow through the appliance and make the exposed pin live. And finally, on metal appliances, the earth pin is always connected to the metal chassis of the appliance. Plugging the earth pin into live will cause the ENTIRE appliance to become live. At that point, just touching the metal case of the appliance can electrocute someone.

So, it's not UL Listed eh? I did hear once from a forensic engineer that if your house burns down because of a non UL device that your insurance agency has a legal out if they decide not to pay the claim.

It shouldn't be listed by anything. I didn't notice it before, but the CE mark it has is also fake. There's no way this would pass an electrical safety inspection by any reputable organization.

I've got a couple of these in the UK (earthed variant (10A), that were supplied by dubious UK ebay sellers with other devices.
DANGEROUS Chinese adaptors compared to our British safety standards:
PINS too close to edge of casing.
    No internal fusing.
Pins made of soft non ferrous metal (Aluminium?)...not tough BRASS alloy that they're supposed to be.
Take a look inside to see how they're constructed...ferrous metal screws holding the pins pressed against the pressed mild steel contacts... Pure JUNK that doesn't conform to any recognised safety standards.
Imagine these being used regularly & then failing catastrophically...AVOID.

If the adapter had the three prongs (Earth) instead of just two would this then be safe or at least safer? I would like to use a fan kit only found in the UK, so the plug is the UK plug, was going to look at an adapter that converted to US, but want to make sure it's safe.

Could be - depends on the adapter and how it’s made.

@@teamkaton-bs As long as you use the device in the correct orientation you should be ok. I would not use a lot of high current devices with the adapter.

Regarding this adapter that you recommend, my thought was to plug this adapter in and then plug in a surge protector/ power strip to it then plug my device like iPad charger to it? Would that work fine/safely?
