My goodness, a lifetime of love of opera and I hadn't heard the name Leyla Gencer until yesterday when the radio station France Musique dedicated a special to her - a true belcanto voice. Such a pity there are not more recordings!
I have heard of Leyla Gencer for years, but not until today did I have the wonderful revelation of this fantastic soprano. The sheer voice is beautiful, even more so than Tebaldi's. Her delivery is effortless and the size of the voice is all one could want for Leonora. Her musicality is faultless, and her stage presence is regal. Gencer belongs in the first rank of great sopranos.
Not only is she a spectacular singer but her acting is fantastic…..not just her visible acting but her acting in her gorgeous voice. The line down from her soprano voice to her mezza voice is like a dream. This clip ought to have 1 million views at least. From 6:03 onwards she is so totally a Leonora in love - full of joie de vivre and excitement. Noone, not Callas either, convinces me as this spectacular artist does. Her musicality, her attractiveness, her spectacular voice, her intelligence, her artistry - all of those qualities make her into the stuff from which legends are born. And she sure is one legend among true musical lovers around the world. 💞
I could not agree more…that TV production and it’s Studio Recording mad me fall in Love of Gencer’s artistry …If we would only have ONE Soprano today I would follow here all over the world to se here in Live . But unfortunately this age of Golden Opera Interpretation is gone for ever……..

In the western Catholic ( I’m not religious) Leyla herself claim in multiple Interviews that is was a whole new culture and a whole new world ,not beeb Italian and coming from a far different culture,she had to Adapt all these meanings and understandings. But a great Artist Leyla was she got the “Wipe ” and adopted in to this…..without loosing her Turkish Roots…That is true understanding of Style an cultural differences…She was a TROOPER..Viva la Gencer….Greetings from Germany

That is if you are technically secure have a concept and understanding of the role not only the part you singing( like it is unfortunately today) but also have a charismatic character Brava Gencer, Callas, Gheorgiu Charesmatic singers , better said “Darsteller” we seldom find today
Gencers pianissimos are legendary ....this requires absolute command of the voice....listen to Gencer in Cavalleria ....she does it agin...from cruel voce di petto to heavenly piani...via bel canto.

She skips all the written trills in the cabaletta. How can you be the best in something if you can't even sing what's written? Nevertheless, this is one hell of a performance, dramatically and lyrically exquisite delivery indeed.

Despite the absurdity of the costuming, where since it's time to prepare for bed, she should come down in her nightgown, it's good to see a performer acting at such a high musical level. And the cabaletta gets just the right approach to near but not quite hysteria, which belies the appraisal of Julian Budden, who called it tinselly and insignificant: not when sung like this.

Yes It's sad. Callas and Gencer (and Verrett) were never boring but always exciting, even when less than perfect. Some singers just had it.....
Such intense musicality, why is such an art no longer existing today. The sad situation the opera world finds itself today.

There are beautiful performances available with Callas early in her career. At least as good are those of Zinka Milanov and Leontyne Price.
