- The role she was born to play? Roseanne took to the New York stage in the spring of 1997 to play the non-singing role of The Wicked Witch of the West/Almira Gulch in the Theater at Madison Square Garden production of "The Wizard of Oz."
I was one of the original little people to audition for this production, before they cut us for children instead. there were 100 of us, I auditioned and was called back for the mayor and Nikko, but lost out to kids. she did a great job. I worked with her only for a scary moment, where they had her come in when we did the call back with Ding Dong dance and she entered and scared the crap out of the 50 that were called back. it was great to meet her.

I was all three witches, Rosanne, Eartha Kitt, and Joanne Worley. They were all fabulous for different reasons. I enjoyed this production all three times. I thought Rosanne did a great job paying homage to Margaret Hamilton while also adding her Rosanne touches. Great memories!
Wondrous casting here. Barr really is so entertaining as the Wicked Witch!

Surprised by the negative comments her. So many witches just screech and yell. And yes, Roseanne gets in a bit of her "yell voice" but it' makes sense when she does and she gives a great performance overall with her inflection and her reaction to other character's lines.
The negative comments are likely because Roseanne is a known racist and generally horrible person.

Somebody had a stroke of genius when they thought, “Let’s get Rosanne as the Wicked Witch of the West.” She nailed this part!

Heavens. One of the premiere theatres in New York, and this is what they accept? To use the word amateurish is the very least I can say - and least is a key word.
Gotta say while she lacks a lot of Hamilton's wry subtlety, you gotta keep in mind that she's doing what's probably most appropriate for the setting- playing to the very back of the house (garden?). It seems like too much when filmed zoomed in like this, but I kinda feel like if you were there it woulda felt pretty natural all things considered. And credit where credit is due she has a SOLID Gulch.
... that said FUCK Roseanne as a person, holy shit

There were plenty of songs in this production, but Roseanne did no singing. When this production was revived at MSG, Eartha Kitt took on the role and sang as always.

This is the only one I have from this production, alas. There is a video of Eartha in a tour of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella."

Since Booboo Stewart played Young Max in NBC's "Dr. Seuss' The Grinch Musical", He should play Toto in "The Wizard Of Oz" musical. After that, he should play Toto in "The Wiz" and Max in "Disney's The Little Mermaid".

and what if They brought back the wizard of oz play and the returning cast - Jessica Grove , Michael Gruber , Martin Klebba and Lara Teeter come back . but have Dick Van Dyke , Glenn Close , Carol Burnett , Kristin Chenoweth , Norm Lewis , Victor Garbor etc. star in it as : the Wizard / Professor Marvel , Cabby , Doorman and Guard , Almira Gulch / Wicked Witch , Zeke / Cowardly Lion , Glinda the Good witch of the North , Auntie Em , Uncle Henry / Winkie Guard General etc.
what made the wizard wanting the witches broomstick and what was he going to use it for - he should've gone off to the wicked witch's castle and get it himself
In the book he explicitly tells them to kill the witch,not bring him her broomstick. However inthe 1939 film (which this is based on) he tells them to bring the broomstick because he knows that in order for them to get it, they’d have to kill her.
It’s essentially an indirect way of telling them to kill the witch.
