We definitely need a new pen-f. Also, I believe it would help if OM did a refresh of their premium prime lens line. Improve the optical quality (looking at you, 17mm) and add weather sealing.

Fujifilm did the market research for them with the XM5. They just need to to do the RnD now. I’m hoping they make a new Pen F and take back their dominance with smaller cameras and lenses.

You're referring to the 17mm f/1.8 lens, right? I'm thinking of buying that one soon (I'm sick of the slow AF on the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 I've been using). I don't love hearing that the image quality isn't great though -- maybe I should reconsider?

People are always asking for a new pen-f but a cheap OM-10 with latest autofocus/firmwares from OM-1 would be perfect for me.

Yer I too want more of OM. Maybe an apsc sensor in a new OMX surely they can fit a larger sensor in that tank. We'd all love to see a Pen F remake but I think they should go back to the classic Pen styling for the EP8 remove the fully articulating screen and give it a portrait and landscape tilting screen to give it a photocentric appeal. Then a Lumix like video monster GHline, full HDMI socket with mic and headphone jack on opposite side of screen bracket. I'm guessing it's too late to make that in next om5 as I'm sure that's already in the works. Red thanks for keeping us informed and watch them squirrels around your acorns 😂

@@76steps "remove the fully articulating screen and give it a portrait and landscape tilting screen to give it a photocentric appeal. "
The E-M10 has a tilt screen, I don't understand why there is a fully articulate screen on the OM-5.

When I unboxed my EM-1X and held it for the first time, it felt like the camera was custom built just for me. When it pair it with my 40-150 F2.8 lens, the balance is impeccable. I love everything about this camera and if OM Systems came out with a OM-1X, I would be among the first to purchase one.

I will add another vote for an OM-1X, for my E-M1X has been outstanding since obtaining it nearly two years ago. It simply "fits" and the ergonomics feel exactly as if made for my hands. Yes, there ARE a number of minor things that could certainly be tweaked and upgraded (the EVF is certainly usable but... ). Yes, it IS heavy compared to other bodies but I honestly don't notice it when I am out using it for landscapes or wildlife and the occasional rail or aviation images I take. It pairs well with the Pro glass choices I've obtained and the weather sealing is ideal for dusty/snowy western North Dakota/eastern Montana and occasionally a jaunt down to Wyoming or South Dakota. I don't hesitate to use it on days when it's colder here than in Alaska and having extra battery life only adds more points in its favor. I still want a bit more out of the sensor (who doesn't, eh?), especially after shooting the aurora here for the first time, but I'm not nearly as worried about bumping up the ISO as I was in my old 4/3 days.
If OM came out with an upgraded version, I'd certainly not hesitate to obtain one, though I'd also never part ways with my E-M1X, either. I'm 57 and feel it a wee bit more every winter here, especially hiking around out in the badlands, but I didn't buy the body to be smaller. I bought it for its capabilities, even after seriously comparing systems and weighing the pros and cons of going to a larger sensor. With the internal processing and software options available today, it's really becoming a mute point in so many shooting situations.

I would like to see a really Wow-Camera like an OM-1X in the nearest future especially made for Wildlife Videographers with the best AutofokusSystem what the market can offer right now like a Sony or Canon. I think that can help to keep OM-System and the Micro Fourthird System in the Market.

Completely agree with your thoughts on EM1-X. It was my favorite Olympus to date for use on the 150-400mm. Would love to see the technology you suggested in the larger form factor. As you suggested, it wouldn’t be a travel camera, but a truly professional body that could compete with Nikon Canon and Sony in the professional market. Hopefully along with that we would get a new sensor that could also compete with full frame. I’m obviously asking for a lot here, but we need more revolutionary products for micro 4/3 to grow.

I have been OM system, biggest supporter and critic,
I just bought a brand new OM-1 MK2 it is more enough camera for me, but that does not mean that I do not want to see them do better in the future, more than likely, I will not be buying another camera for a few more years, but by seeing OM systems bring out an all new camera with an all new 30 megapixel sensor with all new tech and hardware inside it that give me confidence that OM systems is gonna be around for many more years, encouraging me and many micro 4/3 users to stay with the system,
OM systems needs to bring out a camera for the street & travel photographer, such as all new Pen-F styled camera that needs to be the first priority to win over those street and travel photographers first, then for the wildlife photographer all new OM-1X with an all new 28 or 30 megapixels sensor with an all new image processor, six months later, they should bring out an all new OM-1 MK3 & OM-5 with an all new alloy body instead of plastic with a more secure tripod mount, both new cameras need to have an all new 28 or 30 megapixel sensor with all new image processor inside, OM systems need to go all out with cutting edge technology, and where is this pro lens that keeps being talked about, new 50-250mm f/3.5 is pro
I think it’s supposed to be also a white lens, it’d be nice to see big white and little white pro lenses for the wildlife photographer to choose from.

I would love an OM-1X with a little more resolution. To me, a camera that feels good in hand is a must, and the EM-1X feels like it was made for my big hands. I would love to see them lean into the outdoor thing and weather seal everything. Could you imagine weather sealed, updated 1.8 primes on a weather sealed Pen-F?

I agree 100% on the X - i've felt no need to replace mine. Would i, though? The ergonomics and superb balance would have to be uncompromised - i still shoot lenses like the ZD 300 f/2.8 and the 150 f/2 on mine and it wears them perfectly. A 25MP sensor would tempt me along with improvements to CAF. Point of order, however - can all you good people stop banging on about the weight and size of the X? I have a mug of coffee sitting on the scales next to me - it's 250gms less than the X. My Nikkormat FT-N is 40gms less than the X. My Kindle plus a 5Ah 18v Makita battery are about the same as the X. The cat that sleeps on my head for six hours every night is 3.5 times the weight of the X. And the dimensions? I have jacket pockets that will take the X with a pancake on it - not something you can do with a Canon or Nikon pro body. It needs that size - 21 buttons / a four-way / 2 jog thingys / six dials / 3 switches / 2 latches, 4 port covers / etc - all of that is instant control, access and convenience and it all takes up space. The thing is a miracle of light-weight and space utilization. End of rant. Thanks for the video - enjoyed your thoughts and the squirrel.

I'm with you 100%. I can mount my OM 12-45mm f/4 pro lens to my E-M1X and it doesn't weigh squat considering what I can do with it. Likewise, if I mount one of my lightweight primes, it just fits my hand like a good 'Snap-on' tool. At the same time, it is perfect for shooting with my 100-400mm Olympus lens. I keep reading posts elsewhere from FF wildlife/bird photographers who are actually switching to OM System because of size and weight vs FF. A very high performing OM1X would really appeal to such people, including me.

They should launch: 1 - OM-1X, for the big lenses and for more processor power and to avoid heating problems; 2 - OM-3, with the OM-5 size, but with metal body and OM-1 (first generation) capabilities; 3 - OM-5 ii, with the OM-1 sensor and Menu; 4 - Penf ii, for the street photography hype (we NEED these Camera! wake-up OMD); 5 - TG-8, with a 1” sensor. And for lenses they should launch a weather sealed 75-300mm mark ii; a new Power zoom option; a 10mm f1.4 Lens and the Pro 50-250mm f4.5! They should do that IMMEDIATELY!!!!

The OM-1X would be great, as specially for the wildlife shooters.
However, I fear that OM-System does not have the development power to develop the required software.
Here I'm talking about an AF that is absolutely on par with an A9III or R5II.
If they can do that, plus a 40-150mm F/2 with an integrated 1.25 or 1.4 converter, it would be a dream combination.
But it will certainly remain a dream.

I agree with you. OM-X is the halo needed for visibility on the market, and of course for the pro photographers. And also the PEN F2 monochrome will be a halo. I don't know if you want it as much as me, but still. Third camera is a PEN-L, with features like the X-M5. And then a PEN-M tiny stylic street and family camera. So 4 cameras is needed. Kk, I could agree about a new tough camera, but I want return into the lost markets.

The OM-5 is where it's at for me and its my most used camera, but a little bit of the shine goes off it when I put it beside my OM4ti film camera. Standing back they look very similar, but the OM4 feels like the real deal in the hand and even more so looking through the viewfinder. I think you know where this is going, lets have the OM5 with metal top and bottom plates at least (even if not Titanium). Give it the new BSI sensor from the OM1 and make it slightly bigger, say around the 450g mark with the difference in size / weight being down to mainly a larger and more high resolution viewfinder. Give it the new menu system and the GND filter from the OM1ii. This would help a lot with the dynamic range in landscapes, which as we all know is a weakness of the smaller sensor. I guess it would have to cost more than current OM-5 and I can't say how well it would sell in current market conditions. What I can say is I would buy one!

Well, actually your list is pretty much like mine. I’m waiting for an OM5 MKII which is basically an OM1 MKII Lite meaning sensor, better AF system and Human AI etc.. A Camera for Travels, friends, nights out, the street and the like.
And then of course I keep on complaining that there is a need for an OM1X. Don’t get me wrong the OM1 MKII is a hell of camera, but when it comes to Nature, Outdoor and Wildlife it isn’t the one. One major flaw of the OM1 is basically Winter, or the period from let’s say End of October to March. If you try it with gloves… not fun at all. And then you need something you can handhold in any direction and distance without loosing grip and suffering ergonomics which is a must on long highes, especially in the mountains, under all weather conditions. The EM1X is just flawless in that regards. And then it is the tech as you rightfully said. Just take two Truepic X where one is purely responsible for AF,AI, IS and Pro Capture and the Other for the Rest. Double or Tripple the buffer. Maybe one SD Card and one CF express card slot. Finally 4K120 for Wildlife Slowmos. And then a New Sensor with finally 24MP and ReadOut speed comparable or near the big ones. And to be real, this isn’t something that is not impossible based on a what OMDS already has.
And finally there something I would also put into the play: As such and OM1X would be very fast and very future proof i would also accept that their would be payable FW updates like 1.0, 2.0 3.0 etc.. so that such a camera isn’t needed to be “redeveloped every two three years….

Hey Jimmy, long time no see man. I totally agree with your comments. About the OM-1X camera. They need to have a new sensor, a wow sensor to make such a camera. It could be a global shutter, a higher resolution, or something else. With a new sensor, they can throw everything inside, but I'm not sure if OM System has the r&d capacity or the will to make such a camera. I can imagine OM-1X with a global shutter similar to the video functions of GH7, dual CF Express Type B slots, and maybe a new battery with higher voltage to support more functions. They can put the Sony A1 viewfinder, the GH7 screen, the Canon R1 or Nikon Z9 battery and make an amazing camera, you're right that the E-M1X body was probably the best body to hold in hand. I just don't see this coming. It's a huge r&d for a very niche product.
The one thing I want to see and miss is the PEN-F, it's not so hard to put in a new sensor and processor and release such a camera. They have the foundation from the original PEN-F even if it's not weather sealed, just put a better viewfinder and screen, add a joystick on the back and a bigger/higger capacity battery if possible and that's it. It will be a hot seller for sure. And if they can make a B&W version it will be even more amazing.

Practically speaking: OM needs an entry level camera with its famous IBIS and a viewfinder for $799. They would be the only system that offers such value at such a price: to hook new customers. Canons R100 is less about making $ than it is about locking new photographers into their system. A smaller lighter entry-level camera with better quality features than the canon Fuji or Nikon would give pause to the lower end consumers to consider OM system. Then of course come out with all the stuff Jimmy talked about; but we need more entry-level people coming into the system. Oh, I forgot: package it with a kit lens that blows away the canon R 100 kit lens.

Great ideas for future products. I own the Pen F, OM-5 and the OM-1 MkII. I love all three. I do agree with you. My three O M System Camera wishes are:
    1. A larger sensor compact waterproof Tough camera. Maybe with either an 1" sensor or a MFT sensor. Maybe call it a Tough Series camera or maybe call it a Trip camera.
    2. A new mid-level camera with a new BSI sensor using the TruePicX processor. Put it in either a new Pen F Pro body or in a metal OM-5 body. Put a dual hinge rear screen on it.
    3. An OM-1X with dual processors and improved video will be great.
Now for lenses. I would like for them to fill out the f1.4 line of pro prime lenses. The 20/f1.4 was patented by Sigma. Sigma also has patented a 10/f1.4, 14/f1.4, 30/f1.4 and a 40/f1.4 if my memory is correct. It would be great to see a few of them to reach the market.

I'd love to see a PEN-F 2 with weather sealing ( does not have to be on par with the OM-1). The original Pen-f was heavier than it looked as it was. So add a little weather sealing. Updated sensor, better auto focus with some pro features thrown in. I agree on the OM-1X. They need to throw a ton of R&D into it and make it a true WOW camera. New sensor, even better auto focus and tracking. Just improve the OM-1 mark II and put it in an EM1-X body. I love having a grip on my camera bodies and the EM1-X was IMO the most perfectly handling camera I have ever held. Never owned it but had some friends who owned it. But it absolutely MUST make a major impact on the industry or OM is finished. With that being said, I think these two products could really breath life into OM systems. They can't continue doing what they are doing.

For me, the OM-1 Mk2 is almost perfect. Two improvements that would encourage me to upgrade would be resolution of, say, 26mp and CFExpress support. But, if I’m honest, the 20mp sensor has never really been an issue - even though I shoot birds in flight and so crop frequently. And, although it clears slowly, the buffer is big enough for the relatively slow SD card not to be an issue. So these are ideals rather than necessities.

I agree about having a 1 inch sensor tough camera. That's a sort of "hole" in the market right now. If you want to take your camera on a trip to Florida to go snorkeling with the manatees or on a cruise to the Caribbean where you might do some scuba diving, you can either get an Olympus TG series camera with a 1/2.3 inch sensor or a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera with an expensive waterproof housing. Meanwhile, 1 inch sensor premium point-and-shoots are doing much better than the old 1/2.3" sensor point-and-shoots, offering improved low light performance, but nobody is making one that's waterproof, so if OM System did that, they would have no competition and it could be an all round travel camera for the enthusiast that can't justify carrying around half a dozen lenses plus a waterproof housing when they go on vacation. It would offer high quality results in a small package, and I think a lot of people would buy it. I can think of a couple of people who already own or have owned Olympus Tough cameras that would be likely customers off the top of my head.

I think a successor to the M10 should be a priority. OM needs to attract more "entry level users" to discover the benefits of the micro 4.3 system and once you can attract new users to the system, they will start moving up to more advanced bodies with more features. My M10 ("mark 1) was the first Olympus camera that I fell in love with and led to the M10 Mark ii, followed my the M5 mark ii, followed by the M1 Mark ii and now I have a MI mark iii BUT I still have and love my M10 mark ii!

    Hey sir! Ethan from 1of1images
You’ve likely seen my macro shots. I think you’re right with the OM1 X camera. It is something that would serve the macro photography well. Things it should offer:
Higher processing for high resolution mode overall
High resolution images up to 100MP jpegs, 125 MP Raw
Focus bracketing in High Resolution mode up to 200 images
Focus stacking for regular 20mp (or will we see 26MP sensor?) up to 40 images in camera
Focus stacking for high resolution mode up to 40 images in camera
Lets let the 90 Pro do what it’s capable of with a better sensor and the above capabilities!

Hi Ethan, thanks for dropping by mate. I always love the X, even when it first came out. Many hated it (at the time) but I was the odd one who actually picked one up when it landed in UK. I've been using it ever since, though these days it's my stream camera and I use the OM-1II instead. I still love how it handles.

@ I’ve never tried the original X. I’ve got the battery grip which makes my EM1 Mark 2 and 3 similar in size, but not in capability. I posted elsewhere that I would like to see the new C come out with high resolution focus bracketing up to 200 images at 80MP or even 100MP. In camera focus stacking for up to 50 images for regular 26MP images (assuming the newer larger MP sensor is used).
Also faster bracketing ability for use with bugs and spiders and such

If you want a bigger sensor for the Tough-8, you will need to give up something. Either the body/lens will need to be bigger to cover the new area, you have to give up focal length, or the aperture will get slower. If you change the body shape in any way, you lose out on all of the compatible products that have become part of the system that are part of the infrastructure. I would imagine that a larger sensor would draw more power also meaning battery lifetime would go down.
I don't know in detail, but I believe that a lot of the smaller sensors used in the past no longer are being made (like the 1/1.7" sensor). The only 2 sensors left for compact cameras seem to be the 1/2.3" sensor used in the TG series and the 1" sensor.
Now, while the TG-x series has a niche, particularly in being a dive camera and really tough, I would really prefer if OM came out with a Stylus-2 to complement the TG-7 or TG-8. Granted with the 1/1.7" sensor no longer being made, like I mentioned above, they would have to tinker with things. What I would like in this unicorn camera is:
    * Roughly the same size, maybe slightly bigger, but not too big;
    * Splash resistance to the IP-53 level (i.e. OM-1 level). For me, it doesn't have to be IP-68.
    * OLED viewfinder, not TFT LCD
    * Reasonable zoom at f/2.8 (Stylus-1 is 28-300mm equivalent, I might prefer something like 24-250mm or 24-200mm)

  • @jasonwrites9186
    @jasonwrites9186 Місяць тому +1

I hope they don't make a TG-7 next year just because I just bought one! lol. I love it. And the fact that you can hold the "info" button when it's off and use it as a flashlight is super cool. I do wish you could move the focus box around the screen a little more intuitively though.
I hear you on the OM-5 successor but I think with the OM-5 still new, they should focus on (as you pointed out) the PEN. I think they should phase out the EM10 series and replace it with the PEN - I don't feel there's enough of a difference between the EM10 and EM5 lines to warrant both for a company trying to gain ground. Honestly, give me a PEN with the guts of the OM-5 and keep it very stylish, and maybe a modernized 14mm and I'm so there.

I actually think that, aside from the lack of a 1 inch sensor point-and-shoot, the OM System camera lineup is pretty good. Unless they can drastically improve the autofocus, I don't really see the point of adding new cameras to the lineup. If they do make an OM-5 II, I think it should have dual card slots, transforming it from a very expensive prosumer camera to an entry level professional camera for portrait photographers, product photographers, and others who don't need the fast action capabilities of the OM-1 series.
What is needed is a 300mm f/2.8 that has a built-in 1.4x teleconverter and weather sealing and is similar in size and weight to the 150-400mm f/4.5. I expect most of the customers who bought the 150-400 will also buy a 300mm f/2.8, as well as many who didn't, so I expect it would be very profitable, assuming that it's not overpriced like the Olympus 300mm f/2.8 for the Four Thirds mount.
The other lens that would really complete the system is a 17-60mm f/2 zoom. With Canon and Sony making 28-70mm f/2 zooms, I'm sure OM System could make something similar that would offer a moderate wide angle to medium telephoto field of view that would be perfect for wedding photographers and videographers as well as portrait photographers. I personally do pet photography, and I've rented the 12-40mm f/2.8 on a couple of occasions for Christmas photos and I've had great results, but for Christmas photos, I would like a zoom lens that's a little bit brighter so it can turn the Christmas lights into little bokeh balls and soften the background a little, even at wide angle. I've considered renting the Pana/Leica 25-50mm f/1.7, but I often find myself wanting to go a little bit wider to include more of the background, and I would be willing to sacrifice a third of a stop of light for some extra zoom range.

What I want OM SYSTEM to try is to revise AIR A01. It can be same old 20Mpix sensor, thing that should be there to recreate and occupy new niche is better connectivity and replaceable battery. AIR A01 and Sony attempts at "camera modules" were ahead of their time, and with how much easy it is right now to DIY your own connections-adapters-tripods-rigs, I personally would like to see A02 with ability to control and charge through USB-C and ability to switch batteries or bypass internal one.

I agree for the three proposals... I want a TG8 with larger sensor and better video specs to ditch action cameras. My TG6 is very bad in video. With a 1/1.7 or 1/1.3 sensor it would be a nice upgrade as tiny go pro and dji cameras have done it already. I also want a new OM5 with better video specs and new sensor or at least Om1.2 sensor. And finally we definitely need a hallo product to compete with companies flagships R1/A1II/Z9.

Better still: some good script turned into a short film, documentary or similar, to put that gear at long last in real use. Otherwise we'll stagnate and regress at this stage of gear gear and only gear. But it should serve a purpose other than make money for manufacturers and hit reviews and views on UA-cam, don't you think?

This was the general blockade of the original X. People thought it was too big, too expensive for M43. But they forgot to compare the same class of body on full frame would cost 3 times the price at the time. As mentioned in the video, Olympus did miss a couple of important things on the X to really made it stand out. But time tells that the X is one camera that many M43 users actually want.

Well given OM is coming up on the December 28th deadline where they will not be able to sell the OM-5 (or E-m10 mark IV) in Europe due to the camera not having USB C support, I'm disappointed that they haven't done something like the Panasonic G97 (i.e. refresh a camera with USB micro-B to use USB C). As I understand the law, OM will still be able to sell OM-5's after December 28th, unless the cameras were imported into Europe (or made in Europe) before the December 28th. Given if the company has OM-5's stocked in warehouses within Europe to sell, they will need to pay taxes on the inventory, I doubt there are vast warehouses with OM-5s waiting to be sold.
I do agree, they probably need to push the envelope on new features, but that can always be a marketing decision, since the fear would be it would rob OM-1 mark II sales (which presumably have a higher profit margin).
Now, I don't know if Great Britain still has the USB C mandate that Europe had enacted before Brexit came up.

Thanks for this video! I may be dumb but I still don't understand about different sensor sizes/quality. I understand that they are different sizes, but why are they made from different "materials"? Like if the pixels' size is good on a full frame sensor - why don't use the same pixels' size on a Micro 4/3's sensor. I understand that there would be fewer of them because of the difference in sensor surface area. It's like quantity vs quality; I don't see why we cannot keep the same quality even though we change the quantity. See?

That's unusual as this combo works really well. First, I would suggest see if there's any firmware updates on either or both the camera and lens. Then just test SAF with the camera on a firm base (preferably a tripod). Just to take a few shows to see if the focus point is sharp. Try it with other lenses (if you have any) to see if it's the lens or the camera. If the images are still unsharp, you may need to contact OM or the people you bought the camera/lens from. I don't usually hear this problem however.

The Pro series f/1.2 are very expensive and, for me, too big and heavy, personally I don't need faster lenses i'd happily settle for f/1.8 or maybe f/1.4 if it didn't add appreciably to the size and weight but weather-sealing would be very nice. A PEN-F 2 with weather-sealing would be nice but I doubt if I could afford to upgrade to it or, for that matter, any new gear. :( It has always really irked me that Olympus reserve weather-sealing for their faster PRO series lenses, one can't have one without the other with all the extra expense, size and weight that goes hand-in-hand with it.

The Fuji X-M5 is basically a G100 with recipes. Somehow, though, the MFT community frowns on the G100 because of no IBIS. A super cheap entry level simply competes with a point-n-shoot. The E-M10 mk iv is more capable than the X-M5. Ditto the PEN-EP7, from a photographic standpoint. If OM Systems released an OM-1X, the MFT community would complain about the size, or the cost, or both.
