The Olympus E-M1 Mark II is a truly unique camera. In some aspects, it even surpasses the OM-1. I originally planned to sell it, but after using the OM-1, I found myself missing the image quality of the E-M1 Mark II. Additionally, the handling of the E-M1 Mark II remains the best Olympus has ever brought to market.
Totally agree with you. Upgraded to an Om1 from the Em1 mkii. I find my self reaching for the Em1mkii more. The dials on the Om1 suck. But low light capabilities are noticeably better on the Om1
I run a trio of GH5 MK IIs for my production workload. They are beasts and deliver time and time again. Amazing gear for a creator on a budget. Pre-owned, they are an amazing value. Match them with the Panasonic 12-60 (to start), and there's very little you couldn't get done. Cheers Rick
Even though I now have the Leica Q3, I still carry my Lumix G9 with the 100-400 zoom at the ready and the 12-60 Leica Panasonic kit lens on standby. There's always an opportunity for micro four thirds. Good list Grant.
_I still carry my Lumix G9_ --I'm always more comfortable with my not the best camera. For the casual shooting, that is. If I'm on an assignment, then it's the other way around. But expensive as it is, I could never even think of taking Leica with me for an assignment.
G man loving the list. You are not just some guy,you are da man😂 I loved my short lived time G7. It turned out to be my worst Christmas gift to the misses ever ! I read the signs wrong thinking she was going to start a makeup channel. Oh boy was I wrong 😢 I shot with it for a while B4 selling and handing money to the misses and my autonomy on Christmas present choosing. I own the Olympus omd em1 ii. It fits the hand like a latex glove. I don't do video and only own Olympus bodies now. Surprised no Pen F. Great to have you back G man keep um coming
My G7 is wearing an Olympus 14-45mm f2.8-3.5 full sized 4/3 lens. There's a full 4/3 Olympus 50-150 f2.8-3.5 in the bag as well. Love my kit lenses for light weight use, but the fast zooms have been my go-to for 20 years. I've also got a 42.5 f1.7 prime that I'm enjoying a lot, along with an old Carl Zeiss 50mm T* f1.4 Contax lens
Grant! I got the EM-1 Mark II this week on a Black Friday sale used for $525. I love it! I can't believe I do, but I do. And yes, Robin still uses it as his main workhorse! Grab one if you can find one and I really think you might enjoy it. Now... the menu system was mind-boggling but 2 hours later :D .... Great topic! I still love Panny boy too.
Thanks for a good roundup and some thoughts for my bargain hunts, to test e.g. G7 or G85. I'm in the Oly camp and actually currently selling an EM1.2 for way below $1000 (on eBay AU), so it's easy to find. I'm shooting mostly wildlife, so settled on an OM-1, but bought and sold a GH4, GH5, G9 plus a few more other cameras this year.
A great list. I have the G85, and love it for travelling around. Currently have a Nikon D7500, and it is so good. Have been thinking about making a full switch to M43, what would be a good replacement?
I am not about to declare what I think are the five best MFT cameras are, but the original G9 and the GH5 MII are by far the best that I own, or have owned. They are great cameras. The G85 was my first mirrorless camera after using Nikon apsc dslrs for years. The G85 and its follow-up the G95 are both terrific cameras - I loved them. The GX85 is my #1 street camera. The G100 is very underrated, fun little camera. The only Olympus I have really used, and currently own is the OM-D E-M10 Mark III. And it is a fun EDC camera. I bought that camera (the silver version) mostly for nostalgic reasons. The first "real" camera I ever owned was the original Olympus OM1 slr in the early 70s. That WAS my camera for many a year. The M10 MIII is very close in look and size to that original OM1 - so I love it for those reasons. And it takes great photos and pretty good video. Anyway. I have rambled on too long. Peace.
I have em5i, em1iii and om1ii. The om1 ii is crazy nuts especially burst shooting, Im still unsure sometimes if, when, how many shots were take when I press the trigger
Wasn't expecting the E-M1 II to be on the list. I almost bought one earlier this year but missed out on an eBay auction, which lead to the purchase of the Pen-F. Would still like to try one out.
When I decided to pick up a second multi-role mirrorless, I knew I wanted the two to be the same platform. With a Canon R50 and a Panasonic G5 on hand, I had to decide: Canon RF or M4/3? I nearly pulled the trigger on a G7, but in the end I bought an R10 and a PEN Mini E-PM1.
@@jimsakai I have it and completly got that from you. Not a knock at all. The G9 Mark II is a near perfect professional M4T's camera. I don't think it has been as impactful on the M4T's industry as these on his list. Perhaps in time it will.
I own #4 and 5 on your list. The G85 is someways the perfect size M43 camera. Compact but not too small. Too small gets fiddly. The 16 Mp is plenty for most things and the camera has a very decent build as well. Oh do remember it was a DPReview Gold star winner. The G9. Pure pro build and good size for larger lenses. My Panasonic 100-300 or an adapted Nikon 60 micro spend the most time on that camera. Here is the thing. I always buy used and picked up the G85 for USD $277 and the G9 from my local dealer in Ex+ condition for $550. I did have a Nikon Z6 but to add the additional lenses to match what I purchased for my Panasonics would be very expensive (and bulky) I bought all my lenses used with some serious bargain hunting. That collection is The Panasonic 100-300, Panasonic 12-35 2.8, Panasonic 14 2.5 and new to the pack a Panasonic Leica 25 1.4. Total cost for all the lenses was about $1200 USD. No way could I match that lineup with larger sensor systems.
I’m actually not a massive fan of the pen-f these days - and I made a follow up to this video: ua-cam.com/video/rO-THGil9TA/v-deo.htmlsi=_JUUknf2-09cxS4o
Hello there, (from Maine, USA) I had the OM-1 system (previous OMD-mk2) I ended up trading it all in for the Nikon z6iii and now, I find that all of my images look exactly the same. Sharp and crisp. (I have a hefty 180-600 z, 24-70 f4, and the 105 macro) So I am in the works to trading my Nikon system back in for the OM-2 I have these lenses that I’m hoping to get in the trade as well: 12-40pro 300 mm 40-150 pro 17 1.2 What are your thoughts? I do landscape, wildlife, and some macro/astro, a little of street and people. Any recommendations on what you’d choose for a lens line up?
I like the list. The GH5 is probably the most influential MFT camera over all and was very far ahead when it cam out. The EM1-II is the Olympus flagship that kind of shows everything while the EM1-III and OM1 are less revolutionary improvements. The G9 is actually just a GH5-light but still the camera that is the sweet spot for a lot of photographers. The G7 was very interesting, kind of a surprise as a the light and low cost GH4 and it is still sold "new" (unused) here in Germany. G85 was even more the perfect small and light MFT camera if the G9 or GH5 is to much and to expensive also still available (G85 with Lumix 12-60 €599). I would like to see the GM5 as the perfect very small camera in the list, may be also the GX9 and the GH7 because it is the best MFT camera today but then it would be 8 cameras instead of 5.
I have full frames with a multitude of lenses, but I still have room for MFT when size matters. An older Lumix GX85 is a great walk around camera and an Olympic M1 MKII works well enough when I don't want to lug large lenses around. But sorry mft fans, when it comes to low light, dynamic range, incredible bokeh or if I plan on cropping, there's not much comparison against a high-resolution full frame. My personal choice when I'm getting paid is that the mft gear stays home.
But what about the... Just kidding. Great list. My list: 1. G9 2. EM5 ii 3. EM1 ii 4. G9 ii 5. GM5 Plus GM1 for being so darn cool. Slight bias to Lumix as you can see. Olympus menu drives me mad. 😅
I’m going to pick cameras not in production. EM1 Mark3 EM5 Mark3 I would have put the G9 on the list but thank god I got the extended warranty. They had to send me three new cameras because of problems. And two of those cameras had to be sent back for service twice. And the 3rd camera front wheel stopped working 1 month after the warranty expired. They wanted 596 dollars to just replace that wheel. Great design, terrible camera. Probably never get Panasonic again unless it’s something really special?
Obviously a very subjective list, why not. I was expecting the GH2 to take a place in the row of fame, but you’re not that old :))) -Just a tip, if you know that you move your hands that much (nothing wrong, I do too) when talking, why not try a longer focal length, works miracles… :)
Personal - historic - emotional… I thought the same as you, but then again, some of my dearest shots I did were with the GH2, so I keep fondest memories of it, and that was the people’s first video camera revolutionazing the market, let’s not forget!
You list is great choice of bodies , but they are all flawed by having the video screen which makes me scream as I only shoot photos ha ha . I wish Olympus kept the EM 1’s as a photographers body . After the EM 1 mki was replaced I have used the EM 10 Mkii and for size and choice of screen , I have not felt the urge to change . Sure, for video it is fair to okay , but that is in good light etc. As a stills camera it works perfectly for travel, street , kids and with one fixed focal length lens and your phone for wide angles , I travel light and rarely miss shots .
My man, you list is a travesty against humanity....lol....ok I'm over reacting a little. The Olympus omd em1 was a ground breaking camera when it was introduced, but I agree the mk2 is a better camera. Also any top list has to include the Pen F and the em1x, so it should be a top 6 list. What body would you drop out???
