    Would be nice if hospitals size you for the correct flange before leaving hospitals or at the 6 week check up with your obgyn. Im a FTM and it’s sad how much lack of information they give you about postpartum

      Same!! I didn’t even know about the different flange sizes until I was fiddling on Amazon….. no one even told me about post pregnancy vitamins… they kind of just boot u once u have the baby and assume you’re going to snap back. They don’t even acknowledge post partum depression they desensitize it by calling it postpartum blues

    It’s honestly amazing that I was so successful with breastfeeding and pumping for work. I remember at like 4 months I found SOME of this info and tried a 19mm. Literally 5 more ounces came out than with the 24mm the hospital gave me. It was SO much more stimulating to have the smaller flange. No one in the hospital even attempted to give me a different one, while that 24 mm was OBVIOUSLY huge on me!!!!!

      How did you heal your nipple from the trauma while still emptying the breast? I'm facing this right now and due to the trauma having difficulty getting any milk out of the plugged ducts.

    • @Mrrp_huh
      @Mrrp_huh 3 місяці тому

      @@cathleengotsch6855 I’m so sorry you’re going through this! 🫂
      I stopped using my pump for a bit until I was healed. I took the loss on milk sometimes in order to hand express and relied mostly on baby’s nursing and hand expressing to empty. Honestly, letting some milk go down the drain is worth it to get my health and well-being back and will help my supply in the long run. I know online conditioning can make it seem like it’s the end of the world to “lose some liquid gold” but it’s honestly ok lol you’ll make more in no time. Then, focused on early nursing for baby. What I mean is, bringing them to feed before they’re hungry, so I can make sure I have a great latch, I’m comfortable and able to adjust without fighting hunger and frustration from baby. Sometimes when baby is super hungry and I’m uncomfortable we sacrifice latch and nipple health just to feed baby. So being earlier to their needs and also frequent to empty the breast, helped me to focus and fix the latch issue that was also playing a factor. Okay so after trouble shooting those two areas of what was causing the trauma, now to healing it: I found that my milk was thicker and had a lot of it but my nipples are small. My milk was not leaving the nipple as fast as the demander was wanting. I started taking sunflower lecethin and this helped immensely. Follow the directions on the bottle, it relieved the clogged duct within 24-48hrs. I kept taking it as a maintenance because when I stopped the first round of healing, I got clogged ducts again. When I consistently took this supplement, I never had a duct issue again unless it was latch related.
      Next step, very very gentle massage. Honestly I didn’t trust myself to not go too deep or hard on my breast because I was in pain and impatient in some moments and found that me trying to heal was actually me hurting myself more sometimes >_< (never ever pick or pop your duct. If you see the clog emerging, gently hand express it out). I used a small vibrator on a low setting and lol just vibrated around my breast to move the milk back up the breast off my nipple which allowed me to take the pressure off the backed up ducts. This also helps to thin the milk if it’s been in there for a while and thickening up. Drink so much water!!! This thins the milk too. Honestly, thinning that milk out as much as you can helps it pass so easy and still has nutrients for baby. Hydrate those ninnies!! Make sure you have a healthy buttery nipple cream or even bio-oil helped me more than creams when I had scabs and open wounds. Creams burned and hurt where bio-oil just filled right in the cracks softly and healed really quickly. Grape seed oil is great too just make sure it’s appropriate for skin use and not the hair kind. I hope this helps! Message me back anytime as needed, I’ll keep a lookout in my notifications 💞 you’ve got this mama!

    I'm a bit lost still, I measure 17mm which is recommended a 21mm flange but my nipples still swell up and rub some of the walls.
    If I use the standard 24mm flange that came with my pump the same thing happens but also pulls in areola. My nipples are so sensitive and hurt all the time now that I've been pumping :(

  • @Asharra12
    @Asharra12 2 роки тому +9

    I've tried a bunch of different sizes (24mm-13mm) but no matter the size my nipple eventually rubs the sides of the tunnel. The 15mm looks the best in terms of not drawing in areola but the 13mm is also very close. I have very flat nipples that only measure 12mm when not swollen from feeding or pumping. I don't notice a huge difference in pumping time between 17-13mm.
    A few questions:
    Is this what is meant by elastic breast tissue?
    Is there another way to see if I have the right fit than "doesn't touch the sides"? Is there a way I can help with this inevitability? Would you suggest a different style?

    • @Asharra12
      @Asharra12 Рік тому +3

      @@PollyColonaOficial I did actually. I found out that the smallest size that wasn't rubbing at the beginning of the pump session was the right size for me. It was more important that I didn't bring in ther areola than that it didn't touch the sides for both comfort and speed of pumping. Hope that helps

    I’m so confused as to how the nipple isn’t supposed to touch the walls, but it swells up to the sizing every time?? No matter what size I use, 12,13,14,15,17,19,21 none are working how “everyone” says it is supposed to…. My nipples swell to every size or start off good and then end too tight.
    Does anyone know of a video with a real breast that you can watch? These fake breast are not helpful at all when trying to figure out how it is supposed to look.

      Absolutely! It is not uncommon for the nipples to be different sizes. It's also not uncommon for the size to change over time as your breasts change/adjust to more milk, less milk, and even less swelling after birth (or from using a flange that's too large).

    • @angelenaj0Li3

      I would say yes 100% because that’s happening to me. I get clogged ducts because it’s not emptying all there is. I find the advice online to go up 2-3mm is complete garbage. It definitely doesn’t apply to me. I’ve been wondering why my supply is not going up and realized way too much of my areola goes in Once I looked it up online. I’ve kept trying to downsize all the way to 15mm now and it’s STILL happening. Hoping the 14mm fits because I’m at a loss here trying to exclusively pump 😩😭

    • @Bfden

      Flat/inverted nipples can be a challenge. I tend to measure what I can see best as the nipple, pump a bit with that size, and remeasure once the nipple has fully come out.

  • @AdingADongALBC
    @AdingADongALBC 3 роки тому

    I’m quite confused about my size and idk if you’ll be able to respond to me. I measure after I pump and they each measure around 19mm which means I’m a 24mm insert. But my nipple and part of my areola is inside the flange. The nipple rubs a tad bit but during and after pumping, my nipples are not sore nor are they sensitive. If I go a size down I’m afraid the flange will be too small and if I go a size up I’m afraid the flange will be too big. Now would you say I should stick with the 24 mm flange?

    • @Bfden
      @Bfden  2 роки тому

      Hi! Measuring before is much more accurate, after you have pumped your tissue has swollen to meet the size of the space available to it.

    • @Bfden
      @Bfden  2 роки тому

      Hi! I would recommend measuring before you pump, not after. After you pump the tissue has swollen to fit the size of the flange you are using. It sounds like sizing is down would be appropriate, but if you need some help we can help you. bfden.intakeq.com/booking

    • @Bfden
      @Bfden  2 роки тому +1

      As long as you are low risk, you certainly can, but I like to remind people that your breasts will change a lot as your milk comes in, and then stabilizes post partum. Getting a basic idea of flange fit now is a great idea, but don't stock up on a bunch of parts, because the fine tuning should happen once milk supply is stable.

    • @Jessiealabama1205
      @Jessiealabama1205 3 роки тому

      Yes, you can measure them. They have a lot of different rulers and ways to measure if you google it. There are also a lot of Facebook groups where LC will size you if you can't go to an LC in person. Search flange sizing in Facebook.

    • @Bfden
      @Bfden  3 роки тому

      It's generally not recommended to use a used pump. Most pumps have a 1 year warranty and are designed to last for 1 year to be used by 1 pumping parent, for 1 baby. If you're in the USA, your health insurance should cover a new pump for you.

      Hi! That's a great question. Inverted nipples are hard, you need to give them some time to come out and then measure. It will be uncomfortable for a bit no matter what, because the tissue has been so protected for so long.

    • @Bfden
      @Bfden  2 роки тому +2

      It's hard to measure, because you need to also take into account the way your nipple moves/stretches. There are some measuring tools available online, but I don't use them in our practice. We focus on looking at how the milk comes out, ad how the nipple moves, and how the flange feels when a parent is pumping.
