How to get rid of blisters from pullups

- "I get blisters when doing pullups, how come you don't seem to struggle with them?"
"Do you wear gloves?"
In this video I show you how to not get blisters, and if you do, how to use that to your advantage and accumulate calluses - tough skin, which will help protect your hands from future damage. I also give a few tips on strengthening grip, I will post a separate video giving even more tips later on.

I avoid the callus problem altogether by simply doing pullups on my fingers. May be hard at first but as your tendon and forearm strength catch up, your biceps and back will again be the limiting factors. Now that I'm getting into rock climbing the ability to hang indefinitely on my fingertips is priceless.
im at the stage where the blisters on my left hand are affecting my performance when im doing pull ups ...
Same. Did they ever go away? Your comment is 4 yrs old so I'm hoping you got some advice
@@alexjjustin they don't go away, they harden over. They eventually become really tough, which is good. My advice would be, embrace it. Let your hands get used to it. I've done thousands of pull ups since I made that comment, and eventually the callouses cease to be an issue. Best of luck.

Man this tip is all I needed , after I tried this grip and chalk my muscle up improved , now I'm doing it clean and explosive , also my max pull up increased by 4 reps , thanks !
Hey Fortress, just thought I'd say, I think your videos are brilliant. Keep it up man :)
Bodyweight exercises + Cardio make the coolest build ever.
Literally couldnt get over this issue for so long and didn't know why it was always so painful and why the skin folded. Thank you so much, this helped a ton
You're going to get blisters and calluses if your doing muscle ups, no stopping that.
You could prevent that from happening
You can tape down small/medium blisters and the skin will heal back together after a day or two, it's harder to tape them down on the palm of the hand, but it's easy to do on fingers. If the blister is very big, you can use a needle and thread soaked in iodine to help drain it, thats what the army do. Also surgical spirit helps harden the skin.
Hmmm sandpaper sounds like a good idea! Didn't think about that!
i used to have the same problem when i first started training but i figured out that holding the bar only with the 2 upper segments of all fingers (no idea what its called in english), except for the thumb, solves it. Its might take some time to build up the strength to hold the bar that way but its worth it. I also use that way of gripping for parkour and it works totally fine and i have alot less hand injuries than other people i train with
I can attest to this. I've used a coarse grit sand paper to deal with my calluses and I find it even more effective than a pumice stone.
i dont mind the blisters it shows how hard i work
this is stupidity
***** why you say that?
I feel the same way.. I work with people and their hands are baby fuckin smooth.. just shows how little to fuck all they actually do at work compared to some of us
I'm always subconscious about shaking hands...
I thought that too, until the blisters started to hurt my training
Hey, thanks for the video! Will try it out Tmr!!
Agree not to pull off calluses. My hands are callused from deadlifts heavy grip training, and chins from a heavily knurled bar . If the calluses get too rough, I just rub in almond/grapeseed/sunflower oil after washing. That keeps the skin thick but flexible. Never had a callus rip since I started to do that(a tip from my wife). You never have to stone/peel/file. Thick skin builds up on the hands for a good reason(protection),
this is awesome man. I've been getting blisters and this advice will help a lot
Excellent video!! Not many guys know about this. Thanks for sharing this on YT.
One thing I would recommend that you didn't mention is sanding them. Like you said the skin builds up and becomes tougher, and if it gets too thick if you're doing a really dynamic move like a bar transfer that you were talking about, the hard part of the skin has a lot of friction with the bar, and especially if you slip off or something you can rip the soft skin under the callus, and the whole thing will come off.
It's pretty common to sand calluses with sandpaper so they're not too thick
Not trying to be tough. You should spend your time more wisely than accusing people of lying on the internet. I wish you luck in your journeys, may your exercise progress be speedy!
Another great video Paul!
Thanks a lot for this video.. I was just thinking about the exact same subject and you answered all my questions
Nice Video; Thanks for all of then, I'm watching a lot, but it would be really great if you can make a video for forearms, I'm triying calisthenics but my forearms are killing me with my wrist. Both of then take me tooo long for the pain to go away. Thank You.
yea after doing alot of parkour i got a lot of blisters .. after long time my skin got strong and doesnt bother me any more :)
hey you've got very good bicep, are those only from bodyweight exercise, which exercise in specific
Pull ups 🧐
Hey, just one thing, for the musle-ups with the t-shirt wrapped around the hands, make sure you keep your wrists tight once you're up, otherwise you can turn them if you usually rely on friction to keep your hands from moving in a support position.
WHAT ARE THOSE?? (sandals) lol
It meant to say it when wearing crocs tho
@@thellamasorcerer4785 not necessarily
@@nickcabrera3087 Mostly tho M
I wish I found this video earlier but all well. I've done so many i don't get them any more my skin just doesn't rip anymore
Hey thanks man! You told me its gonna be in the next video and it is! Thanks a bunch! Gonna work on my pullups!
Paul, could you do a video on building grip strength? I notice when doing pull ups I get to about 15, and when I do, my forearms start to give out. I feel like I could pull out a few more, but my grip is weak. Thank you!
I needed this info, thanks.
I do some thumb over the bar grips to help take some of the focus off my forearms and biceps when pulling. I do both grip styles usually.
i have pretty big and strong calluses from pullups in my personal bar. i found in my town a park with bars but the bar has very big diameter. When i got there i couldnt resist the free space and started swinging and one of the caluses got ripped of. Also the big diameter helps the overlapping of skin.
Dude, the blisters at my hands were really annoying! Thank you very much for your awesome videos!
But what if my blister is torn? And I can see the flesh and is kinda pain when water goes in or soap(even pain)
Let it heal lol. Wear tape or gloves for now.
stop being a little bitch
Xavier Jones XD
+Xavier Jones I keep doing pull-ups after my calluses are toned and the wound starts to decay
bioglue, buy in your local drug store, pour it on the blister, let it dry, it makes a layer of artificial skin over the damaged area so it starts growing fresh skin underneath which should halve the healing time
Swinging/monkeying on the bars is great fun and getting caluses is unavoidable. I just use rough sand paper and sand them down when they get too thick. I indeed noticed that the skin has gotten really tough, but I still always use chalk, just for much better grip.
Hey buddy :D. I uploaded a video just for you. I do pull ups all throughout the day so I figured I'd take your bait and record a set.
Good info rite here!
so using gloves is not a good idea? or i can use gloves? because well... i've been on the bar for so many time (not consistent with the training) however my hand always get blisters, even when i can do 10 pull ups and stay with good grip on the bar for over 3 minuts. its weird. do the gloves also help me to eliminate this?
using sand instead of gloves, like gladiator, was the best motivating tip i've heard on youtube this month! Cheers, i'm moving to the park tomorrow and i'm gona eat that shit like hell :p
i think it looks good in what proportion they are to each-other
I recently started using the monkey bar and I get a lot of calluses from swinging around. Although I do not have your body to weight ratio I do have a strong upper body that makes it easy for me to move my arms but everytime I've been doing the exercise the calluses always come back.
I also do pull ups which I usually have no problem with, but what is your recommendation for swinging on a monkeybar without getting this?
Very helpful
You don't increase the friction between the bar and your hand when using chalk, you decrease it. Friction between your hand and the bar is at a maximum when your hand is moist. The chalk reduces the moisture and direct contact between your skin and the bar, therefore alleviating palm friction and reducing blisters.
It is mainly for a stronger grip. It just does not slip when it is all white :)
yeah I use my fingers for pullups sometimes too but watch out for the muscle ups its best to place your wrists on the bar or you could mess up your wrists pretty bad no lie it happened to me I couldn't do pullups or chestdips for 2 weeks straight just letting you know so you don't get injured too cause 2 weeks of no pull ups and chestdips really messes up your momentum
Try progressing the exercise, try weighted pull ups, with a disc possibly 5 kilos you can put it between your knees or hang it from a belt, muscle ups also work. Also you could try one armed pull ups =) Hope this helps.
FINALLY THE ANSWER
Can also do pull ups on fingers but tires out the forearms fast
Bunker a video of you can get Chinese subtitles, I am a Chinese, did not understand English a lot of trouble
I'm biting off my calluses, before they become blisters, and it works like a charm.
5 years = 2 blisters (gained by some fucked up training, not the regular ones)
I get those too
welcome to the club :D
Hey great video Paul. I do a lot of modern arnis workouts using sinawali sticks. I cover half of the sticks with athletic tape to help with grip, but I still manage to get some blisters every week. I'm wondering if you think this might be an issue of weak grip on my part, or if athletic tape just doesn't work well enough to prevent blistering.
i have been doing pullups for like 5-6 weeks now today my blister from 2 weeks got cut open because of a pullup now that wont happen again =D thx
I'm a Ukrainian dude and I love you, man. No homo. I'm at 43 pull-ups right now. How do I improve even more and faster?
the best way to learn a human flag is just by continuing to try to do it..theres really no exercises to help you specifically with it but you do need to know things such as leg lifts obviously..just keep jumping into the exercise and overtime you will get strong enough to hold it
Paul: Do you do chest, back, and abs on the same day? Or do you split them up? Thanks a lot bro. Also, how many sets of each or is that just a personal choice?
Tnx alot Fortress ;)
thing is, If i don't cut off my calluses, it'll grow bigger and thicker from everyday training and it'll start to hurt. Should i still wait, bear with the pain and not cut them off? Those that hurt are on my fingers than on my palm. Advice anyone?
You should have some calluses, but try rubbing a pumice stone on your callus in the shower once a week. Not so much that it hurts, but just bring it down a little. Also try and work on grip technique, and it should help. Try lotion perhaps as well.
Very true!
sand and dirt might give you an infection if you still practicing and new.
you have insane biceps! you build your body only with bodyweight? or weight lifting / elastic bands ecc? sorry for bad english..
Simple solution- do what I do and wear weight-training gloves. I never get calluses from doing pull-ups nor from lifting barbells and dumbbells.
I don't know about the other stuff. But I know with chalk, it dries out my hands making them more prone to calluses/blisters and bleeding while training.
Hey Paul can u pls do a one up pull up challange ? Like ur previous video
Just bear with the pain and the skin in the affected area will evolve and get stronger
The big guy in my class complains about blisters and stuff whenever he does pull ups, I'm not sure how he even got them since I can only get calluses.. have an irritating habit of peeling at them unconsciously tho :/
My left hand is ok but my right is dying, bleeding under skin, constant pain
great video..needed it..I do hanging as long as I can without gloves or sometimes with (finger naked ones) for height increase...my callouses heal ... come back..what do u suggest..need this or shd i continue :) ?
The only bar i have access to is at the school across the road and that bar is quit thick. Should i not do pull ups on it or just keep doing them
Hey Paul, do you work out your biceps solely from pull-ups/chin-ups and exercises where biceps are a secondary muscle group?
For your biceps do you just do chin ups? Or are there other body weight exercises I should know about
I just peel the hard layer off and in a few hours the soft skin underneath will go hard again and then its like a new layer of skin till the next time it forms a callus
very informative -- what is your height and weight? r u small in stature like the typical gymnast?
is there any difference if thumbs are over or under the bar ? or its just personal preference ?
Wearing some cheap garden/work gloves really helps as well.
Heh, I've probably done more pull ups just today than you have in a week. But that's not important. I'm fairly light, and have always done them fingers only, even muscle ups. It will strengthen your grip and forearms and before you know it it's not so hard.
So when you are working out, do you do a few sets of like 10-12 pullups or what because your arms are huge? Im wondering because I want my arms to be bigger for more strength rather than endurance if thats possible. Thanks
I like callous
Hey, can you do those one handed apple crush challenges I've seen people with crazy grip strength do? Tried it myself. It's really difficult. I can't do it :-/
We may come from different cultures but bad ass videos man. Check out bar starrs. But bad ass shit homie
i can't disable subtitles, i press the button to disable them but nothing happens
1:00 - I thought of Gladiator and he said it. :O
Thanks so much. I've been working on grip strength, but I didn't know about the hand position and the sand. I've been unsuccessful because it hurt my hands so much. Going to follow your suggestions!
wear gardener gloves. thats it.
M.R VENOM that's not a bad idea
I still get them.
Hey Pavel, can you tell me how can I get rid off pain in my hands when doing dips, it doesn't pass. pls
DON'T.
It's counterproductive towards building your grip strength.
Like he mentioned, once your calluses are gone, your grip will be more sturdy.
.
can you make a back lever tutorial?
yooo ur great!
it burns
Hey, Paul, have you measured your arm? How big is it??
How far away do you live away from your park walking distance? Please answer
What the hell is wrong with caluses?
Whitechvpel Gaming gay😂😂
Twice? Why would you like to see two same videos?
You can try using your fingers to do pullups instead of your whole hand to prevent calluses. But... there's pros and cons to it
Sometimes I get rid of calluses by clipping them off with nail clippers. :P
i cant feel my lats when i do pullups..
what should i do??
100 pullups in a row!!?? ur crazzy gd
but placing the bar at the base of fingers instead of middle of palm makes it difficult for me. the hand doesn't wrap properly around the bar and pull-ups just got even more difficult
what about callisus from dumbbels and such
There’s been blisters in the middle of my hand like a cut and it hurts so fucking much when I open or close my hand
