    Hi Lily! I just found your channel and I’m so happy I did. I’m in nursing school right now and I’m considering going to medical school after 4-5 years of working as a nurse. I have a previous bachelors degree, but I was so unsure of what I wanted to do in college. I found nursing and I honestly love it. However, after graduating from college, I found myself thinking about medical school. And even more now when I’m clinical. I respect nursing so much and I’ve found amazing mentors, but I don’t want to look back 40 years from now and think “what if I HAD gone for it?” I was pushing off the thought because I’ll be 25 when I graduate from nursing school and at least 29/30 when I would feel comfortable starting a new career/finished with prereqs. Anywaysssss I’m highly caffeinated right now, but yeah I’m so glad I found your channel!

      When you are 40 years old, the time will have passed anyway and you will either be a physician or a nurse. Whatever decision you make is great, as long as it's what you want and that you can live with that decision with fulfillment and joy!

      I have a year and a half left until I have my AAS in nursing & then two more years for my BSN-RN .. also thinking of med school after that. Pre reqs will probably take 6 months to a year after that being that I double up on classes so much already, so I’m thinking 4 to 4.5 years until med school (I’m almost 25 years old & also highly caffeinated lol).. You’ve already made your dreams into goals, don’t give up on them! ☺️

    I am currently going to community college getting my prerequisites done to go to nursing school. I decided last semester that I eventually want to go to medical school and everyone has told me that I need to switch my major. I am happy to know that me getting my BSN first will not affect me getting into medical school.

    Hi! I am a cardiac RN as well with a background mainly in the cardiac ICU. Your videos are so inspiring. I am currently in an accelerated biomedical master's program in order to gain entrance into medical school. I am taking the MCAT in June, which is the last barrier(which is so intimidating!!) I have to cross to be a competitive applicant. Thanks so much for keeping me motivated, studying for this test is messing with my confidence.

      Great question! The personal statement is a huge part of your application and nurses definitely have an advantage here since they have so many clinical experiences to draw from and create captivating anecdotes. I have a video coming that will go into detail about formatting and how to start the process! Stay tuned :)

    Hi there! I am new to your channel and love your videos so far. I am an RN with only four months of job experience, but have always had medicine on my radar. Would you advise an RN to get at least one full year of experience before perusing med? Also, I was wondering if you could make a video discussing a career in medicine/the academic road to medicine as a female. Being a female in my mid-twenties, I feel like there are a lot of major life events that would intersect with medical school, if I chose to go now. Thanks again for your tips!

    • @nursemdlily
      @nursemdlily  3 роки тому +1

      I think if you want to go to medical school, then start the journey/process now... the application process takes one year anyways so you can work on it while you work as an RN. That way, you can still get your 1 year of RN experience and get on the road to medicine.
      Honestly, I am not sure how much I can help in terms of making a video about my experience as a female. I might try to interview some of my classmates who are parents and get their experience and perspective - would that be helpful? I don't intend to birth children so I don't have a traditional female life event timeline. I can say that it is possible to go to back to school with children because I have classmates who were pregnant when they started, have young families, somehow everyone manages to make it work!

    Lily I have a question. I'm an LPN grad with plans to pursue my ADN but med school just sounds so amazing to me. I'm pretty committed in nursing now (and my financial situation would improve dramatically once I get my ADN) so after my ADN, should I start the prerequisites for med school, or pursue my BSN first?

    • @nursemdlily
      @nursemdlily  3 роки тому +4

      It is typically required to have a bachelor's degree before medical school (there might be schools that don't require it although I don't know those schools). You can apply to medical school with any bachelor's you want. If you want to get a BSN, it is a very practical bachelor's and you will have job security and a well-paid job on the other end. I would focus on completing your undergrad degree, some of your pre-reqs for BSN will cross over for medical school. For example, all the biology I took, as well as my statistics course for nursing school were also pre-reqs for my medical school.

    • @Glodwra
      @Glodwra 3 роки тому +1

      @@nursemdlily Interesting, that's what I was thinking. So after my BSN, I could possibly apply as a non degree seeker at the University I would want to transfer to (USF) and take any prerequisites I still need, since I already have a bachelors in nursing? Sorry for all the questions! It can be somewhat confusing at times and alot to take in.

    • @franciskumar7530

      I’m in the same boat. Currently, an LPN while in an ADN program. I will graduate from the ADN program in less than six months now. In a dilemma, if I should get my BSN and knock out my premed at a community college after my BSN. Or get my undergrad in chem or bio from a four-year UC that will knock down most of my premed. I just turned 24.

      @@franciskumar7530 I think I may go straigh to UNI for Bio. I would get my ADN first...but I'm literally 3 classes away from getting my medical transition AA from my community college to transfer to a UNI.

      If that works for you, and you have all your prerequisites and a solid MCAT score, then go for it! It doesn't hurt to work for a year as an RN to get your clinical experience (which is also part of the AMCAS application).

    This is a great video and I could really use some advice! If I didn’t go to college and I am currently working on getting my ASN through community college coursework, is it still possible for me to one day transition into medical school? How would I go about that? I’m trying to keep my options open and need some help understanding how I might make that jump/switch one day

    • @nursemdlily
      @nursemdlily  3 роки тому

      Hi Angela B., you need a bachelor's degree to apply to medical school. There are probably lots of programs out there that can get you from ASN to BSN and then you can apply to medical school! If you work at a hospital, they will often pay for your tuition too. Good luck!

    Lol, why give medication to a patient as a nurse without knowing the mechanism of action. I don't blame you though, floor nurses don't have that time to check anything. They get to have too many patients.

    • @nursemdlily
      @nursemdlily  3 роки тому +5

      Because I are not taught in nursing school the biochemical mechanisms of drugs. Like I said in the video, I was taught that furosemide is a loop-diuretic and I knew what side effects to look for but I did not have the knowledge of where exactly in the loop of henle this medication worked and it's biochemical action to diuresis. This was not part of my nursing education. I always knew the basic reason for a drug and its side effects like this drug is for diabetes, this one is an anticoagulant and that is for gout. But for instance, as a nurse, I was not taught the exact biochemical pathway of purine and uric acid production and that allopurinol works on inhibiting xanthine oxidase. This was knowledge I acquired in medical school. I agree that nurses should not give a drug to a patient without knowing why they are giving it. I think the best way for me describe the difference of knowledge here is that as a nurse, I knew the symptom/overarching disease of what that drug was given for, and in medical school, I am learning the in-depth biochemical pathway of how exactly that drug is exhibiting its effects. Hope that clarifies.
