Having not a lot of free time, I end up mostly only working on my parts. This is such a great reminder of how working on basics is so essential! Thanks for this.
Oh, there at the end that's the app iRealBook or iReal Pro. It's got several basic blues/jazz/rock backgrounds but the forums also have several libraries of jazz standards, folks tunes...country, pop...an entire Beatles library. The app plays the chords with rhythm section and has some neat tools for customizing playback.
How can I work on my tone? I've been told from my colleagues that my tone isnt very good and I want to work on that, what would you recommend I should practice? It comes out very airy and kinda gross.
Your lips are probably too loose together. I would actually pucker them together just a little bit more, but never too much to feel discomfort. Try to experiment with different amounts of strengths of the lips coming together. Also experiment with tongue position. Your tongue can work in your favor if you let it. Most importantly, work on exhaling before you're actually ready, but still take in a big amount of breath. This should prevent you from holding in your breath, thus loosening tension when you actually learn to use more air.
The key in solid tone is strong air supported by correct embouchure...always guided by having a great sound in your ear. The Caruso exercises are excellent for working on tone. Check out this series by Julie Landsman: m.ua-cam.com/video/7z9izjmCmkI/v-deo.html
