Thank you for explaining in detail how the Vidiot actually works. Great job as always! I always run micro tips. you get spoiled with them and then hate the fat ones after

Oh you will LOVE that Hakko tips. I was wondering when you will get that angled one. I bought mine 2017 after seeing you use ur older Iron with a similar tip. And its my go to tip ever since. Also they wont wear down as those knockoffs, no need for the wire brush any more.

Re: The tweezers, a suggestion: Hold the component with the tweezers until the solder has cooled and solidified, so it doesn't pull the component away with it. Also, look into ceramic tweezers, so they don't get magnetized and pull components, and "parallel" tweezers, so they hold the part straight and don't have a V angle to ping them out.

I think some of the issues you are having with soldering is the fact that board looks to be designed for the next size up SMD components. Either that or the design is incorrect as I have never seen so large pads on the SOT 3 package before.

The trick with tweezers is to hold the part long enough for the solder to cool down and also to regularly dip the tweezers in a bit of IPA to get rid of the flux…. Regardless I always tell people to just use what tools works for them

The pin headers have different size pins on each side, the thick side should go to the PCB, the thin pins plug into the socket.

I was looking at these on eBay the other day. Then I realised that all the parts boards I've got have them on anyway.

Aha, so that's what that hybrid chip thing does. I remember not being sure of it when I first opened the top of my A500. It's basically the video DAC. Great to have a simple modern replacement. Despite your tweezer action! 😜

Actually, on that note. When doing the little SMD passives, I don't involve the solder wire and instead pre-load the iron. Enough hands then & easier not to blob. I use a K-tip (the big kung-fu chop shaped one), though.
