I use the makeup pads too. However, I give them a quick dip in melted wax to make a good fire starter. They're waterproof, less messy than petroleum jelly, and cut into smaller pieces easily when I don't need a full 6 minutes of burn time.
It takes a tiny bit of effort to fluff up a spot to take the spark quickly, but is absolutely worth it for easy carrying.

Thank you! This helped me a lot. I've never used a fire starter and of course there aren't directions on the package.

I recently bought one and it's now part of my edc. I replaced the lanyard with 550 and gave myself about 8 inches of extra 550 for a tail and wrapped it up with some duck tape some extra fuel to start a fire.

Why wouldn't you just carry a box of matches or a zippo lighter

    • @boggsfamilyoutdoors7447

@@RagingUtai I have about 6 uco storm proof matches along with this kit. As someone with a previous bad hip injury and surgery,a simple fall can leave me in a situation I may be left out overnight somewhat under prepared. So keeping this kit with me anytime I am going into the outdoors I pack this. I know I can at least get a fire and crawl around in the area to gather enough wood to stay alive. With the help of a good quality emergency space blanket in my small kit on my belt. The zippo lighter can become useless over time if you forget to keep it filled. Matches can also have issues. With this u know you have a last ditch effort for a spark to get a fire. I also found a sample pack of Vaseline lip protection that is about the size of one piece of double bubble gum or a starburst perfect for the kit as well. The rod and striker stays in my pocket tho. Everything else is stored in a tin inside the belt pouch with the space blanket.

These are nearly identical to the UST Sparkforce, with one major difference. The ferro rod is great; but unlike the Sparkforce, the attached scraper is crap. I bought two and had to sharpen the scrapers to make them useable.

@@cutlerylover we diddnt come up with it at all. We just carried the British imperial system way after they switched to metric for most things. GB still uses miles per hour for example.
after the revolutionary war, we weren't close to other European countries so why change...GB in the other hand was doing business with other European countries during the industrial revolution so it made sense for them to come on board with the metric system for most things dealing with manufacturing.

Well, which ever system you use, it's better to just have the one system. In UK our butchers use pounds and ounces...pubs use pints.....the petrol comes in litres, although efficiency of a vehicle is measured in miles per gallon 🤦🏻‍♂️...distance is measured in miles...milk in pints...land in acres....all our cook books use grams and millilitres... it's a ball ache ! 😂

Big knockoff of the UST SparkForce, which is about one dollar more on Amazon. The striker seems a little flimsy compared to the one on the SparkForce. I have a Spark Force in every fire kit I make. Great backup. Also good for a lightweight loadout (backpackers, etc).
