What an accomplishment! When you consider the actual construction of the story, there's a lot of exposition in the list of testimonies and Dupin's long recitation of his steps in analysis. But your cadence it perfect to carry it along so one wants to take in all the details. Poe plays fair, the clues are there in the testimony and the story is so much better when you start following along with Dupin. A masterpiece story and a perfect reading.
Thank you for this episode! Your commentary gave me a entirely new appreciation for Poe. I have only read a few of his works prior to this. One memorable time was a camping trip with another family. Between us we had five elementary school age kids. One night we sat a round the campfire and by the light of a flashlight our friend read aloud "The Strange Case of M. Valdemar". The kids were mesmerized. A very fun memory! Now I need to go read some more of Poe's works!
I came here after looking for a good reader for this story, while wondering if you had a reading. Clicked on this video and immediately recognized your voice! 😂 Been listening to your Classic Ghost Stories channel for years, but did not realize you had a whole separate channel for detective fiction! Awesome find!!!
Reading Poe is difficult at best with its vocabulary and intricacies. This was beautifully read. I enjoyed it very much. Poes words are always genius, it’s such a pleasure to hear them done justice. Thank you ❤
And so it begins…from then…to now…& beyond… Poe, exalted for a depth of reasons. Thank you Tony for reading & Gavin for contributing & requesting! 📚📕🧠🫀🫁👣🪭
The opening harangue against chess always cracks me up. "..and it's rote, and it isn't creative, and the people who like it are phrenologically deviant..."
Interesting - of all Tony's readings, I haven't known a story as well as I know this one. Looking forward to finding out what it's like having it read to me. My condolences. Celebrate the time you had together.
I love this podcast! Really enjoy the background information. Nice voice too. Please tell me the name of that piece of music you play I really like that too. More please!
Poe was one of a triumvirate of great American writers who matched any of the more illustrious Europeans in that era . ( Melville and Mark Twain being the other two ) .Sadly we live in a Culture that has neither the time or the patience to appreciate them as we once did.
This is one of my absolute favorite stories. I first read it at University. Our entire class was floored. One can never get enough Poe!
