it helps create tension and a catch point where the ball will catch and have the most hold, if you use it lower down in the head it helps w spacing and for the diamiond stay in place

I think its more to get a tighter channel in the pocket without using an extra mesh diamond. So, a ksi could maybe do the same thing, but it might not becuase it uses a mesh diamond
