I don't know whether other CCs made a video about ammo or not, but you are the first one I've ever seen to make such a detailed video about ammo types. Other CCs are just sometimes mentioning ammo's uses in their videos.
A couple of things to add: HEAT penetration drops dramatically over distance after initial impact. Which is why for the SConq, because the spaced armor is relatively close to the turret armor, HEAT was able to brute force its way. However on the STRV 103b, the spaced armor is quite a distant from the tank's hull making HEAT unable to penetrate because it's lost too much of its penetration due to distance. Another thing that is quite often looked over is the 2 x caliber rule, where if the shell caliber is 2x the armor, normalization doubles* (unable to verify correct normalization amount, wiki is down for whatever reason) This is hardly noticeable but it does change the effective armor value. To prove this you can look at a 60mm plate and compare it to a 122mm round and a 105mm round and you'll see that the effective armor value decreases with the 122mm round.
Great video Max I love this content from you. Funny fact that HE & HEAT work opposite in real time as HE will detonate on Impact (a wall) but HEAT has a delayed timer that on impact will allow the impact point to penetrative before it detonates causing the explosion inside its target rather than outside. RPG-7s are a perfect example of this also why spaced armour on Panzers exist.
I just came back to WOT (it took a 6 year vacation) and I'm surprised HE now goes through obstacles. It used to be the case that HE would explode immediately, I guess this has something to do with this so-called HE rework. I subbed man, IDK why you only have ~24k subs, hope your channel explodes at some point. I've already watched a bunch of your videos and you're the only one who gives all this detailed info on so many things.
That was a really helpful and good breakdown, a few things that I wasn't aware of as in depth as you explained. Now it makes more sense where some of my shots that I am sure would pen and didn't. Probably the best I have seen to be honest. Thanks for doing that 😊😊
I can only really afford 2 to 5 premium ammo per tank nowadays otherwise I wont make any profits...My win rate, statistics and performance are 100% tied to premium ammo because I used to run a lot of premium ammo and my statistics and Win rate took a massive nose dive since shooting less premium ammo.... This puts free to play players at a huge disadvantage due to the -50% credits they make compared to premium account holders or people who have good money making premium tanks... So many games I get hammered by people spamming premium ammo at me and I only play Light Tanks... what a waste... anyways everyone knows this already.. I'm not saying anything remarkable just venting a little bit.. great vid hopefully it helps some people become better players
Another nice thing about HE shells is their slow velocity. If you have someone on the other side of a hill at a distance, you can scroll to a high view and target lock onto them and just "lob" shells over the hill. If they sit still thinking they're safe because you can't see them, it works well. If you don't target lock onto them the game thinks you're aiming past them and will over shoot every time!
Hey Max, Thanks for the comprehensive video, it was nicely wrapping all the important things about shell types. May just one thing left to add, you can also do damage and track someone by shooting their lower plate in an angle that the shell going out of their tank hitting the track. It is a very niche thing, but it can come handy when you track somebody on a corner of a building for example. Credit goes to Darkninja from UA-cam he has a video on it with commentary. Cheers, keep up the great work
Great educational video 👍Would just like to add a bit about shell velocity. To quote Mojo from Kazna: "Always use the fastest shell when shooting at EBRs, not the cheapest or highest damage HE or HEAT but the fastest one your tank has". When sniping with a medium like CS-52 Lis you want to use its much faster gold APCR round thats at 1569 m/s and not the standard AP thats at 980 m/s. On the E 50 M the standard round is the faster one, its APCR is at 1500 m/s, while its heat is at 1200 m/s (still fast for heat but again much slower than the standard round).
Not really. EBRs present two different problems as a target. The first one is the high speed, ludicrously exaggerated by WG from the real EBR(*). A solution is the one you quote, firing the fastest shell. But you also can lead the shot accordingly to the relative higher speed of the EBR and the lower speed of the HE shells. Not usual in WoT, but not that strange in aircraft and warship combat simulations and reality, if you read about 37 mm cannon on the P-63 Airacobra US fighter with its slow motion 600 m/s muzzle velocity, really awful in air combat if you thing about leading those shells on a fast airplane like the Me-109. The second problem is the non standard protection of the EBR. Because once you aim properly and hit the Panhard, it's very possible that the shell finds itself lodged in the rubber of any of the 8 wheels protecting its side. But it is even worse than it looks like. Because the model used by WG to simulate the movement of shells through the wheels means not just one layer of space armour, like the tracks, but FOUR LAYERS of spaced armour. You can check it on tanks gg. That is why I prefer to lead (a lot) the wheeled cars with HE. In the worse case, if the shell hits a wheel, the explosion will splash the soft EBR hull. But whenever the RNG is with you 🙏 and you hit the hull... 💥🤣 * Look at speed stats of the real EBR at wikipedia. There are also old movies on YT showing how the Panhard EBRs in the French army moved when operating on roads. There were no highways in Algeria or Angola to reach those theoretical 105 Km/h.
@@caniconcananas7687 Nice essay, I stopped reading at "really". WoT server tick rate is such that it cannot properly "track" wheeled vehicles that go 100Km/h ingame. You get information from the server about its position with a lag (in my case around 50ms) so it can be meters away (ingame meters) from what you see on screen.
Great video, but you forgot to tell how he rounds interact with spaced armor. Where the armor thickness is 3x its effective value. Meaning for example that leo 1 mantlet (65mm) will be about 240mm effective resulting in bounce with 0 dmg from most he/hash rounds (even fv4005 premium)
Nice Video. I would recommend to give a quick overview over why armor gets much thicker at extreme angles, because i noticed this is sometimes hard to grasp for someone. A visual explanation works well for this. HEAT basically rarly auto bounces but at an angle of 82° the effective armor thickness is extremly high.
if the caliber of the gun is twice as large as nominal armor thickness normalization increase from 5 to 10 degrease for ap and from 2 to 5 on apcr if i am not mistaken
HEAT can actually go trough the destructible walls and it will consider those walls just like spaced armor. If the enemy vehicle is behind the wall, but still close to it, if the HEAT shell has enough pen, then it will penetrate the tank.
There seems to be some rubber shells as well. I shot a distant approaching Object 268/4 with a JPZ E100, using two A.P. and two Heat shells, and the only damage I did was when I rammed it!
Excellent video! It was very informative. Will definately check out your other content. Only been playing for about 15 mos. and have a lot to learn yet. Thanks for the help. It's much appreciated!👍👍👍
Max, two questions. 1 Why does the expensive ammunition on the FV seems to be useless and 2. How do you do the training ground videos with an extra tank?
Hey Max, It would be nice if you could consider making an updated version of "What Tech Tree Should You Grind?", since a lot of the tanks have been changed and also new tanks have been added. Thanks!
Thank you for your work! Can you make a video for the RNG cuz I don't know how it is affecting accuracy but it looks like different tanks got a different RNG?
It would be interesting if WG makes at some point a tank with HEAT as standard round and AP as the (as WG puts it) "shell with improved characteristics".
I was wrong about 2 caliber rule there is the formula for it If the shell caliber is equal to 2 times of nominal thickness or higher then formula goes like this total normalization is equal to standard normalization times 1.4 times shell caliber divided by nominal armor thickness So if u use AP for example standard normalization is 5 degrees but if we use formula 5 degrees times 1.4 times 122mm shell divided by 55mm nominal armor u got normalization of 15.5 degrees
Its also worth to mention that he is very weak against angled armor. Because it will only do maximum of 50% damage on a non pen. Even 50mm of armor can absorb 225mm pen he shell if the angle is steep enough. Also the reason why shooting he with under 100mm pen against almost any tier 8 is not really worth it. Ap will do more damage in most situations. He is for tactical use only. If the he fails to pen even once any other ammo will have a better dpm.
There is a character development in wot. First time you fire apcr, you are like man this is awesome. Then you try heat. And hate it. Over time you will warm up to heat and accept that its good. Then at the end of the arc, you know the best shell was right before you the whole time. Its ap
Can't you just put an HE round anywhere and it will reset the cap - they will always do at least 1 dmg every shot? Granted tracking would be better to follow up with an AP shot..

It's a nice video but not perfect, I'm telling you why. If you stand with a jgpz e100 in front of strv and you have 420 HEAT loaded ,if you aim on that part with the grill in front of strv ,the indicator might show you can pen but you can't. You will not pen that with even 420 HEAT. I'm serious,I tried many times in tests and randoms. But if you shoot above that grill you will pen .
And one more thing you could explain. If you are face to face to enemy, you have HEAT loaded and he is covering the weak spot with the gun. The gun will absorbs the HEAT, but if you have APCR the gun will not absorb the shell and goes through.
I don't understand apcr in this game, they penetrate walls, and then what, they are worse in everything I hate all tanks with apcr and dosent play them, because that ammo is absolutely garbage

7:25 To be exact, the important part of space armour is how far away it is from the rest of the tank.
The further away the more it is effective.
Extremely useful. Superb production values - very well done. What a credit you are. many many thanks.

Is 2x overmatch still a thing?
(improves normalization when shell is > 2x the armor thickness)
love this video max
a cammo guide would also be nice :)
Why there is "ammo normalization"? What´s the logic behind it?
What is the mod you are using that shows the pen/armor thickness below the reticle?
FINALLYYYYYYYYY....THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.
Ty!that was very useful. 😊
I asked u about this once in chat, u brushed me off ,u meanny xD
Out of interest, what’s the mod you use for the armour thickness and tank pen?
With the Death Star why does Hesh rounds not pen the side or back of medium tanks with 240 pen and without spaced armor?
I was wrong about 2 caliber rule there is the formula for it
If the shell caliber is equal to 2 times of nominal thickness or higher then formula goes like this
total normalization is equal to standard normalization times 1.4 times shell caliber divided by nominal armor thickness
So if u use AP for example standard normalization is 5 degrees but if we use formula 5 degrees times 1.4 times 122mm shell divided by 55mm nominal armor u got normalization of 15.5 degrees
Good video! How about one for good side scraping?!
Good job and thank you!
I dint understand Pen mechanics, Between Shells. I cant get my head around which shell to use for what circumstance
tnx for the video, really help me
What is the mod you're using for penetration indicator? And is it legal to actually play with it? Thanks
Yes it is legal. It is called armor penetration indicator. It is for example in aslains mod pack.
great video!
can you explain how damage per minute works. thanks!
Does normalisation count towards the 70° auto ricochet angle?
You forgot APCNR.... squeeze bore rounds. They behave like APCR, but the nomenclature is different. Forgive my OCD.
Its also worth to mention that he is very weak against angled armor. Because it will only do maximum of 50% damage on a non pen. very nice view sir!
Marvellous
What happens with each shell when you hit an open tank inside?
Is that pen indicator allowed in randoms? And if so, what's it called?
Yeah that indicator seems kin of an unfair advantage... so expect WG add it to the actual game in 3 years or so...
Armor piercing composite rigid, btw
Heat rounds won't pen a hay stack.
Really needed this info frfr... Before I was just blindly loading in full heat, no AP, no HE
9:35 what is this site?
In steel hunter the ''2'' hey deal less damage. Not in randoms... oh well.
Can't you just put an HE round anywhere and it will reset the cap - they will always do at least 1 dmg every shot? Granted tracking would be better to follow up with an AP shot..
