Bought a used one a couple of years ago, and in almost 50 years of banjo playing, it’s the best I’ve ever had. It’s lighter without sacrificing anything in the tonal quality. I play primarily 60s folk music and my style is mostly melodic, but it doesn’t take a back seat to any bluegrass banjo when I want to set it up that way. I use the heavier gauge strings and tune it down to E flat because it suits my voice better, but occasionally I’ll go to a jam session, put the lighter gauge strings on and let it rip. Never have a problem being heard. In case you haven’t figured it out, I highly recommend this banjo to anyone who is ready to step up to a high end instrument.
It rings so well!
John wanted a wooden tone ring because he had some old Farland banjos with wood tone rings and liked the way they sounded. I think the fact that they were lighter was an added bonus, but he wanted the woodier tone as his main objective. I took up the banjo because I loved John's unique tone, and I play my Hartford model almost exclusively. I'll never sound as good as John did, but my Hartford is the best banjo (to my ear) that I have ever played. One more little thing: John was a pilot, not a captain.
Good review. Thank you.
Hartford was the best
