    In this video we carry out a comprehensive review of the new Aerosoft CRJ, for Microsoft Flight Simulator.
    We take the aircraft on the included tutorial flight, from Paderborn-Lippstadt over to Munich. Along the way, we'll look at the aircrafts visual modeling and texturing, systems fidelity, sounds, flight modelling and many other areas. At the end of the flight, I will give you my overall opinions on the aircraft.

    Something I love about this plane is the checklists. They are very detailed and according to actual CRJ pilots, it seems to be the actual checklist they generally follow. Even tho the fenix a320 definitely is the most detailed and high level plane in Msfs, the checklist on the efb doesn’t seem to be the most detailed

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Рік тому

      Hello Owen,
      The checklist on the Fenix is actually very true-to-life of a real-world Airbus checklist (using the older Airbus procedures anyway). It’s a heavily abbreviated checklist, as it’s only designed to pick up the critical items during each phase of flight. It looks like the CRJ checklist is slightly more expanded, but I suspect there are also more items, as there is less automation monitoring the various systems of the CRJ.
      I hope that clarifies things a little. All the best! : )

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations Bear in mind that MSFS lets you change time of day in real time, from the weather panel. So you don't need to reload into a flight & can do it on the fly. Maybe at the end of a planned flight?

    Great video as always. I bought this the day it came out. The landing for me is the hardest part - I have yet to get the ILS to engage (its the only aircraft I can't get to work on ILS). Manual landing is very bobbly - all very new to me....plane lands on back wheels and tends to stay off its front for me personally. There seem to be a few issues highlighted by yourself and others more experienced in these matters than me and I look forward to Aerosoft and Asobo fixing them. This is my first complex aircraft and its great fun for all that! Thanks for the review.

      Great to hear you’re moving on to bigger and more complex machinery Mark ; )
      Yeah, I don’t think pretty much any of that is your fault. It is “bobbly” on the approach as you say and currently the autopilot is a bit kaput, especially as far as flying the ILS goes. I find as well that it takes a long time for the nose-wheel to come down (without forcing it). Apparently the CRJ does have quite a flat landing attitude in real life, but then in the sim, I find that gives you too high of a vertical speed on the approach.
      As you say, some fixes needed I think and hopefully Aerosoft and Asobo will be forthcoming with them!
      Thanks and happy flying! : )

    GreT video. It took me more than several attempts to get to grips with the aircraft but once mastered it’s a joy to fly. The lack of auto throttle increases the workload significantly but requires some skill nonetheless. I agree about it being difficult to see the PFD due to the small text sizes so I use the separate pop out function and have it displayed externally which is a great help.

      Indeed, the CRJ is a really nice little challenge to fly. Definitely far more hands on than your typical commercial jet, great fun as a result. I’m not ashamed to admit, I may have forgotten about the lack of auto throttle on more than one occasion at TOC XD

      Lack of A/T isn’t too bad. Flying the thing in real life is relatively easy and straight forward. You just set the thrust where needed and it requires relatively little changes. Approaches can be finicky for speed requirements but it just comes back to pitch power tables

      Compared to the default 747 or flybywire A320, it’s about another 7fps hit. So yeah, it does pack a bit of a punch. Some people say it’s fine though; so I suspect it depends on what is bottlenecking your system.

    Great video, very comprehensive review of the CRJ. I agree with all of your comments, I am a irl Challenger 605/650 pilot, your comments are mostly bang on with the takeoff, the irl aircraft does not rotate itself, rudder/aileron use and coordination on takeoff in a crosswind are very important, the Challenger is a bit of a weathervane and I assume so is the CRJ. During a crosswind takeoff, the yoke is held forward and into wind aileron applied, initially a fair amount is used, then reduced during acceleration and almost zero aileron near rotation, rudder is used extensively as mentioned. During approach when flaps 45 are selected in the Challenger, it is a very noticeable pitch over feeling (impressive the first time irl). The Challenger lands very flat, very little flare required, the CRJ seems to hold the nose off (not sure if realistic). My current minor frustrations are the altitude knob (silly having to spin the knob so much for an altitude change), I do find it hard to read the PFD/MFD at times,. Would love to hear comments about Reverb G2 in VR, the Oculus Rift S is not performing well for me, very jittery.

      Thanks very much for all the great info! Glad you enjoyed the review : )
      Very interesting to hear and compare. As I say, I have no real experience with this type of aircraft (though I spent some time in a static CRJ sim many years ago). For sure the CRJ has some issues, although it sounds like they are being worked on by the developers, so that’s good to hear!
      Re the G2: I’d be more than happy to give you some more info on it. Anything specific you’d like to know? You mentioned jitters, is that as in a low frame rate? Overall, the G2 offers excellent clarity, but my system really struggles to run MSFS with it (indeed MSFS in VR generally). I do like the G2, but really only for its clarity (and maybe sound). It’s not the most comfortable headset I’ve owned (of course that’s specific to the individual), not bad by any means, but you’ll notice you’re wearing it after about 40 mins and have to readjust it quite a bit as well. My main issue with the Reverb, old and new, is that it always gives me a little bit of eye strain (where as my Samsung Odyssey never has and my old Oculus was essentially the same). If you want more clarity, the G2 is definitely the way to go. Otherwise you might be just as well off sticking with your Rift S.
      Hope that helps a bit? Thanks again and all the best!

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations my biggest issue with the Rift S in the CRJ has been the inability to see the PFD/MFD/CDU clearly without having to VR zoom. I have just sold my Rift S, so it is no longer relevant for me to discuss. I really appreciate your thoughts on the comfort of the G2 and your general thoughts on the headset, I will be purchasing a Reverb G2 very soon unless something else comes up to change my mind lol. You may be interested in this new item to make your G2 experience more pleasant: eu.vrcover.com/ I am told this will increase your field of view by up to 15% and is very comfortable, cleanable. Have you adjusted your IPD of the G2? This might make it more comfortable. Thank you again.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 роки тому +1

      Ah, then you will almost certainly be a happy camper with the G2. The level of clarity is just night and day, when compared with any other VR headset I’ve tried. Closer in, it’s really quite comparable to 1080p.
      Again, fit and comfort is of course a very personal thing. Apparently I must have quite a big head, as most headsets only just seem to fit haha. Similarly (and what I think causes my eye strain) my IPD is right on the limit for quite a few headsets, the G2 being one of them. I was really excited to hear the G2 would have a mechanical IPD adjustment as the G1 was really borderline unusable for me. Unfortunately though, I think my IPD falls just outside of the G2s adjustment level (whereas with the Odyssey I’m absolutely fine).
      If your head isn’t as misshapen as mine apparently is though, I’m sure you will love it haha.
      Thanks for the mod suggestion. I have come across it and did consider it, but I think it would probably exacerbate the IPD issue / eye strain for me. Otherwise I’d definitely try it though.
      Thanks again, hope you enjoy the G2! : )

    What a fantastic review, your CRM experience also makes it very pleasant to follow the steps during flight and i wouldn't be surprised if you where or are a flight instructor.
    I very much like this CRJ, but the first remark to Aerosoft i made on their forum where questions about the W&B and CG depictions, i have RW flight experience for more then 20 years and the CG issue is the most disturbing issue IMHO. Unfortunately Aerosoft didn't respond on my remark regarding this issue and i didn't want to make a big deal about it.
    Then again...i really like the product and hope they will make it better, as Alexander (one of the developers) did tell me they are working on take-off and landing issues.

      I do fly in the real world, but I’m not an instructor (although I would defiantly love to go into some sort of training role one day).
      I’m the same as you. I very much like and enjoy the CRJ, but it has a couple of glaring issues. The weight and balance for sure being one of them. I’ve found that loading the aircraft via the pax / baggage method on the EFB seems to work significantly better than the ZFW method, just so you know. My biggest bug bear is the autopilot, it really struggles under certain conditions and not being able to consistently fly an ILS is a bit laughable.
      I’m glad to hear they are continuing to work on it anyway. I think there is enough feedback floating around that they know what needs sorting. It would be a shame if they didn’t fix the issues; otherwise it’s a really great product.

      Yeah, for me it’s been hit and miss. Mostly it works, but occasionally not. I still think it’s C of G related, at least in part. I was 180kts flaps 20 the other day and the aircraft (despite going in to ALT Capture), just completely busted through my selected level. I went back into vertical speed and set a climb back up to the level, which it just busted straight through again. So I took out the autopilot and started flying manually. I got LOC and GS capture, but the Flight Director was completely out of whack on the glideslope. All in all it was a bit of a mess. I’m no CRJ expert, but I think I have enough of an idea of what I’m doing, to know it’s the aircraft at fault and not me. I think the trim is far too slow to react on occasion as well. I still haven’t found an aircraft in MSFS yet, that I would trust to use in VATSIM (I don’t use VATSIM all that often, but I think it’s a good metric).
      Again, it’s a shame, as it often results in ruining, what is otherwise a great trip.
      Anyway, again, hopefully it’ll get sorted in due course. . . Still flying it, still enjoying it haha.

      That’s very true, they’re all pretty iffy. But you kind of let that slide with a default aircraft, or certainly a freeware project. With a payware aircraft at this level though, you expect more.
      Again, I fully appreciate it’s not Aerosoft “fault” that the core of the sim is iffy, but it’s not ideal for the customer to have to work around these sorts of things of course.

      I pretty much always use live weather in my vids, so I guess I’ve just been “lucky” that most of my vids have been on nice days. Then again, of course whenever I plan to do a scenic flight, the weather is rubbish haha. I have a video in the CJ4 heading into Meigs that I have yet to upload. I had visions of taking in the sights along Lake Michigan and then a wonderful arrival into Meigs. Ended up being solid cloud all the way and awful weather for the arrival as well ha. Still, hopefully it makes for an interesting video. . .
      Certainly the 320 would be easier in many ways to learn the basics on. I might actually say the CRJ would be “better” though, as it forces you to think a lot more about profile management, autopilot mode useage, thrust usage etc. Funnily enough, I did my some parts of my CPL in a CRJ sim. The Aerosoft CRJ probably would be ideal in its current state though unfortunately, as you have to battle the autopilot a bit.

      Hey Coenraad, my pleasure as always!
      Hmm, that’s a tricky one. I would say right now, the CRJ is slightly better, only because it’s in a more complete state (that’s not to knock the FBW boys though - they’ve been doing amazing work!). I do enjoy the CRJ and Aerosoft do seem to have eliminated its most significant behavioural faults, but I imagine the FBW A320 will be every bit as good in the long run and obviously there’s no competition in terms of price haha. The CRJ is perhaps more “fun” to operate than the A320 though, as it’s a more “hands on” aircraft.
      If the Just Flight 146 is done to the same standards as their X-Plane version, then I am very much looking forward to it and it will blow the CRJ out of the water in some respects. So it might be worth holding out for the 146, though I suspect it will be more pricey.
      Perhaps worth waiting to pick the CRJ up on sale if you’re unsure. With a decent discount, I doubt it’s an addition to the sim that you would regret.

    I've found that if you import a flight plan from SimBrief, it loads all the weights and all the winds at every WP. There's a few videos out detailing the SimBrief direct import method, all you do is insert the CRJ path into the SimBrief downloader. It makes the EFB weight page a bit redundant! Edit. BTW VNav works exquisitely well, it follows the descent profile spot on!

      I had heard it was possible to import from Simbrief, but hadn’t really looked into it. I generally like doing the setup, but having the winds etc would certainly be nice!
      That’s brilliant re the VNAV. It’s such a shame the aircraft has the issues it has, because it does so many things right. I was trying to fly a tight departure at light weights with a level off at 3,000ft yesterday. Didn’t matter how much I tried to help the aircraft achieve this, it wasn’t even close.
      Thanks very much for the info, I will look into the Simbrief import : )

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations you know I think a lot of this has to do with the Asobo flight model and code. The CRJ in P3d is perfect. I assisted MCE to do a full set of flows for the CRJ. In the end we could even access the ND range control by voice control, specifying the range setting! Asobo are using totally different coding to P3d and it's difficult for add on makers like MCE to address it. I use VNav in the tutorial flight. If you try it you should get a perfect profile executed by the AP! I had great difficulty getting the LOC/GS after the descent. Probably the answer is to use HDG more to achieve a less acute acquisition angle. Anyway, thus is a complete sim in my books. It takes serious "type" rating to fly, not even 737 jocks will find this one easy! BTW, I use the SimBrief weights direct from the FMC import, the EFB doesn't reflect what's in the SimBrief plan and may be causing a COG problem? I too had a "ghost" rotation before I'd pulled back!

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 роки тому

      Yeah, I’m pretty sure a lot of it will be MSFS issues. I don’t see that as a “get out of jail free card” for developers though. One would hope they’re trying their best to work around these issues. The ILS not really working on a commercial jet is a little bit silly really. As you say, reducing the intercept angle certainly helps and apparently capturing the glideslope from a descent helps as well. Would be nice if the autopilot could properly manage the aircraft though, rather than the user having to manage the autopilots peculiarities. Apparently Aerosoft used the default Asobo autopilot on the CRJ. That’s a very strange choice given the default autopilots clear inadequacies.
      As you say, overall a really nice jet though. Very in depth and a nice challenge to operate : )
      There are definitely some issues with the EFB. Even switching between the ZFW method, or the pax number method of loading, gives wildly different results. I had hoped maybe the Simbrief method would fix the CofG, “auto-rotation” etc. Seems not. . .

      Overall the FMS is excellent. It seems to have a few quirks with some of its calculations, but it’s very comprehensive and LNAV / VNAV generally seem to be pretty spot on.
      What is currently letting the aircraft down big time though is the autopilot unfortunately. It struggles to fly the LNAV track if there are sharp turns enroute. It’s very hit and miss at flying the ILS, to some degree the LOC, but especially the glideslope. It also struggles with levelling off if you have a high rate of climb / descent.
      Such a shame, as the rest of the jet is generally pretty stellar.

      I think they’ve had enough feedback about it on the forums etc that they will have to do something about it. The rest of the issues are very minor and frankly I could live with them as they are.

I think she made her takeoff announcement on the taxi out. It seems that certain things trigger certain messages. For the most part it seems to work well, but occasionally you get an odd one. If I’m not mistaken, they’re the same sounds as used in FSPassengers. I wish you could change out the accent though. Hi ElBapino,
      Are you referring to the PERF page of the CDU (I didn’t do anything specific in that regard)? Typically, the colour denotes whether information can edited etc; perhaps with the CRJ (it’s been a long time since I flew the aircraft so, I don’t recall), the colour changes depending on the phase of flight? Otherwise, it’s possible the colouring was initially inaccurate and Aerosoft have since updated the addon. I’m afraid I’m not sure what might be causing the discrepancy otherwise (I’m no CRJ expert and as I say, it’s also been a long time since I was last able to fly the addon) . . .

  • @Galf506

    Study level is not hard to define, take the average "finished" DCS module : that's study level. There's the more refined ones (F-14B, probably the most in depth simulation of an aircraft on a consumer piece of software, unmatched by anything in the civilian sim scope), the good ones (A-10C) and the middle-of-the-way ones with some approximation in systems (F/A-18C, Mirage 2000...) but they're all clearly study level.
    If you can't study the official, real manual, and have a 1:1 experience in the cockpit, it's not study level.

    • @TrueBlade-1889

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 роки тому

      I still think each individual has their own idea of what constitutes study level, but yours and my definition are basically the same Galf. For me; if you can operate the aircraft with a real world manual / procedures and get the correct response from the aircraft (within a reasonable degree), then it’s study level. Personally I wouldn’t need for every emergency system, engineering function etc to be modelled, but I know some would.
      Side-note. I absolutely must try the F14!! I own it, but have yet to find the time to sit down with it. Everything Heatblur touches seems to be gold. I love the Viggen.

      $70 is not a small amount, no doubt about it. In fairness though, with an increase in complexity, generally you will see an increase in price. Obviously it requires more work from the developers and these products tend to be a bit of a “niche within a niche” as others have mentioned. Sometimes there are also licensing costs etc. This addon, whilst expensive, is very much priced in line with other addons in its bracket. One could even argue that Aerosoft have been “fair”. They probably could have charged more and know people would still pay, as it’s the first complex jet for MSFS. Flight simulation is quite an expensive hobby in general unfortunately.
