I think another factor in the extra complexity of achieving perfect happiness is that, on Buffy, she was his only real human connection. On Angel, he has connections to all these people, so he needed to resolve all the outstanding conflicts there as well in order to achieve perfect happiness.

People understandably get so annoyed while watching S4, and if they knew the truth it would change from "Why is Cordelia doing these things?!" to "When will the team discover that the Big Bad is controlling/possessing Cordelia?" Totally different vibe.
The Greatest? Nope. DALLAS managed to write off an entire season with "it was all a dream". NEWHART nullified its entire 8 year run as nothing more than Dr. Bob Hartley's dream. And 137 episodes of ST. ELSEWHERE were the musings of an Autistic teenager.
4x09 My head canon theory for how everything in this episode worked is: Wo-Pang created a situation where Angel would dream his perfect happiness to the point of forgetting to feel guilty (Enyos in BtVS's _Innocence_ episode says, "One moment where the soul that we restored no longer plagues his thoughts, and that soul is taken from him"). He says Buffy's name in this episode because he remembers S2 of BtVS once he realizes he is losing his soul in real life and for him the dream has ended. At this point Buffy was his first love and therefore he will always love her, but he's not in love with her anymore. I believe the same of Buffy. Him saying Buffy's name in this episode, to me, isthe equivelant to when he said "oh no" in BtVS S2's _Innocence_ just before the soul left. In other words, saying Buffy's name is Angel's realization moment of his soul being stripped. Not because he still loves Buffy the same way he actually/currently loves Cordelia. He may have issues with things Cordelia has done, but if it was unforgivable in his mind, he wouldn't be dreaming of getting back together and having sex with her when the soul starts being stripped, nor would the concept of second chances be a theme of the series. If other people have other opinions that is great, but I feel this fits with the Buffyverse's set mythology and how the characters currently work. Usually dream sequences are done badly. This one is done well because it plays the long game without being a cop out. If the dream was real it would've been a cop out, but since it wasn't real it turned into the happiness that stripped Angel of his soul. He had to have the group's problems fixed and have the girl he loved in his arms for the "happiness" to be perfect enough for him to forget to feel guilty. And in this case, it can be given back differently than with the gypsy curse because Wo Pang took it away differently. The process of giving Angel the dream is controlled by Wo-Pang. But he doesn't control what Angel dreamed. I felt more that Angel was laughing at the AI Team and the crew used that as an oppertunity to make it look like he was laughing at the audience. Angelus’ laugh at the end of episode 10 is so good, it’s like the Buffyverse equivalent of Joker (Of course personality wise he’s nothing like The Joker but they’re both lunatics)
It’s a fun romp, but I’ve always found “Awakening” to be a cheap, shameless cop-out ever since it first aired. A disguised filler episode in a highly serialized season.

Angel is the main character of the show, and this episode is a deep dive into what he wants. 17:50 The first thing that goes well in the illusion is that Wesley actually apologizes to him, and he thanks Wes for rescuing him. 18:32 Then the "trio" of him and Cordy and Wes go on an adventure together, just the three of them, with everyone helping. Then of course Cordy admits her mistake, they defeat the Beast, and Connor actually seems to accept Angel as his father. In _BtVS_ all he needed to forget his woes for a moment was to be with Buffy, but he's a much more complex character now, so experiencing true happiness took a whole episode devoted to his psyche.

I'm guessing it was a throwaway line but technically Wes did meet Angelus back in season 1 when angel was drugged with a happy pill by that actress who wanted angel to turn her into a vampire so she'd stay young forever
Technically he didn't. Wesley even states he hasn't really turned. The Doximal was just that good. There was a reason this Angelus and that episode's version were acting different from one another. Part of the reason some fans think the mythology of that episode gets screwed up, when it doesn't, is because he never actually loses his soul. The drugs are just affecting him. Therefore Wesley didn't really meet Angelus. The line isn't technically wrong.

You can see how it's a bunch of things that all have to come together to make Angel perfectly happy. Not just the sex. I love how his only weapon while locked up is his dirty talk. It was very effective.
This story arc has gotta be my favourite of Angelus, David really has perfected it at this point and gets to have more fun while still retaining what makes Angelus so threatening and terrifying. He’s so good in the role

The in loving memory made me so sad my first time watching.
I think Angel called out Buffy's name because she was the one safeguard against Angelus he didn't think of until that last moment.
