I fully maintain that Ultimates vol. 1 & 2's success is more due to Bryan Hitch's artwork than Millar's writing. Hitch's pencils redefined how superhero comics are drawn now, for good and ill.
It was so cool to watch Scott Pilgrim Takes Off (another western comic animated by a Japanese studio) They perfectly captured the art of the comics while also feeling like anime at the same time.
I've always imagined a premise of an Oceans 11 heist movie would work incredibly well for a team of supervillains in the DC Universe called The Rogue's, who are a team of incredibly underrated Flash villains such as Captain Cold, Mirror Master, Heatwave, Weather Wizard etc... all of which have a moral code of ethics and are villains with not much adaptions and are rich with storytelling potential much like this show does.
They all did appear in the flash 2014 show ,apperead in the dcau, , mirror master appeared in justice leauge doom, and Captain cold trickster and mirror master appeared in the 90s show
@@jadenbryant9283 That is true but I feel like Flash's Rogue's gallery doesn't get as much attention or appreciation as well lack of development in many adaptations and media. @@hasthehighground8560 Really I haven't read that comic yet, I'll have to check it out. I'd love to see more animated content or live action media adapt the Rogue's as they're such a fun and interesting team that isn't like other villain teams about taking over the world or killing a hero, they just wasn't to make a quick buck but are always taken down by Flash and so I think there's potential to portray them as underdog villains that want respect. They also have a code of ethics that fleshes them out more as human characters with their own stories to tell and that something the Flash respects as he see's his villains as human beings and people who need help
It's insane to think how many adaptations of Mark Millar's comics are there. Besides a couple of his Marvel comics being used as inspiration in MCU and Fox movies, this man puts out movie after movie and show after show adapting his comics, making a fortune from it, and on top of that, there are more adaptations on the way.
What gets me is they usually change it a ton too so it's usually better because it's not trying to be this edgelord superhero fantasy. Or if it is, they play up the drama or the action and the silliness of it.
Animated Superhero adaptations that are a direct translation of the comic should be the norm for real. Edit: but it should take what works & what doesn’t to make it even better with og ideas that expand the story like the first episodes of this show.

Invincible deviates from the comics a fair amount and its all for good effect, some things just don’t translate from one medium to another as well as you’d imagine
I like this show because it can be comedic and fun with dark undertones. Actually makes me feel like people enjoy living there instead of the Boys or MCU where you wonder how people leave their houses without being depressed or afraid
I agree that more adaptations should be closer to the originals. I get why a lot of Marvel/DC stuff truncates given how many years those characters have been around, but for stuff like Super Crooks, a simpler 1-to-1 attempt really works. I wouldn't mind hear what you think of Tiger and Bunny if you want more Superhero adjacent anime stuff to look at.
I remember reading the comics when it came out, the census being that it was gonna be made into a movie shortly after. Then years went by and it dropped on Netflix as an animated show. I saw the thumbnail and went “oh, I remember that … kinda.” And still never watched it. Wanted to, just never got around to it. Maybe now I’ll give a shot.
It was nice but the plot just kept on moving for example the first ep it went from being super serious like 20 kids got boiled alived in a pool to pg 13 “we don’t kill” saying that to the old man with volcano guns who just killed three ninja dudes. Also halfway through the story Johhny just becomes a side character and barley uses he power except to light a cigarette a few times. And don’t get me started on the last episode it felt completely rushed with the bastard still being alive and we don’t even get to see the aftermath of the Pretorian, his entire character carried the shoe
I've seen people have arguments against "comic accurate adaptations" cause they say "If I want to read the story from the comic I would just read the comic" or "if they would do 1:1 adaptation, it would just felt like water down attempt". And while it could be the case in some cases (Killing Joke the animated movie is the biggest offender), I think it ignores benefits o the "more accurate adaptations". One is the fact it IS a different medium, so it's already a different experience than watching a comic, but also how Xavier explained with Supercrooks, you can use adaptation to expend on the source material in areas that the original story didn't. That's what Invincible also did. Not to mention most of those adaptations are targeting to people that don't read comics and likely have no intrest in doing that. I'm not against adaptations that reinterpretations the source material, cause I'm all for getting a new stories that takes inspirations from the comic, while also I think with Marvel and DC at least having truly accurate translation would have been almost impossible, since many of their most popular stories depend on the fact it's based decades long history of the character, that most adaptations will never be capable of incorporate even 1/5 of it, and also the fact you do have to streamline some stuff for the sake of working in a new media. However, the fact it's the most prominent style of adaptation they made in the west, I think makes it a key factor why people think what adaptations should be. And yes, I'm also starting to get tired how everything has to be "one's vision". Sometime's it's a personal work of someone that loves the source material, other times it's just disregarding the source material altogether and do something unrecognisable. Ironically, the 1:1 adaptions that wests do is usually with the books, but maybe argument there is that comics are much "visual media" than books, idk.
I never knew Super Crooks was in the same universe as Jupiter’s Legacy. And honestly I think the show was pretty good. Seriously never saw why people are disappointed by it.

Given the talk of Mark Millar's comics at the beginning, I think it'd be interesting to make a video taking a look at edgy, try hard comics like Wanted or The Boys and discuss why they don't work as opposed to stuff like Invincible, or Kick Ass, or the live action The Boys.
I'm glad you decided to talk about this show. It's so underrated and I want to get more like it. I actually think a lot of American comics would be great as anime adaptations.

I’m genuinely surprised at how famous Millar has become for his work and how many of his comics actually get adaptations. I’ve read some of his stuff and honestly it’s some of the most cringe dialogue I have ever read in my entire life. Ultimate X-Men was outright unintentionally funny at some points and only really got good after Millar left the series.
I love this show so much I got the comic too and its great, I love that they actually built upon the original instead of needlessly changing everything. And the soundtrack is DELECTABLE
I've heard about this show and it did interest me, but I didn't hear enough to be invested enough to watch until now. Thank you Xavier, a good review can really influence someone.

from what u described, it kinda reminds me of the ROGUES. the group of super villains of the flab, the fattest man alive! we got captain cold, the trickster, mirror master, captain boomerang, the weather wizard, golden glider, heat wave. the badass leader, two brutal villains, two buffoons, and one tragic villain that isn't really a villain and is just compelled by his mental illness. put 'em all together, and you got one of the best teams in comics! they're aren't just teammates, they're friends, they hang out, they stop each other from being drug addicts, they attack the flash together, they even got a moral code! it's super fun they're ALWAYS teaming up, so it's not just a mini-series. read stuff with the rogues! i'm not shilling for dc or being paid it's just really fun.and it has a very similar tone to super crooks.
I don't know why but the Diesel twins remind me of Havik in the Mortal Kombat game. Has the same premise, except he can use broken parts of his body as weapons. Literally used his own arm as a weapon! Including his own heart!
0:50 super crooks doesn't have a high budget at all, mainly since every anime has incredibly low budgets compared to western animation. Only difference is Japanese animators are overworked and basically abused, as well as anime having fluctuating frame rates. Western animation has longer schedule, very very consistent artistyles, and also more consistent frame rates. We live in a world where family guy has a bigger budget than basically any anime ever made ($2M per episode)
18:32 funny enough, japan also does live action superheroes shows pretty great, best examples would be kamen rider, super sentai and ultraman. And for a more mature audience, garo. They mostly rely on practical effects
Part of the issue with "faithful" adaptations of superhero comics is that there's like there can be a million different versions of a character like Spiderman or Batman in the comics, or like the same version gets some inconsistent writing between different writer's runs, or in spiderman's case, the story is forced to match the new movies because brand synergy or something. And of course, there's also a whole bunch of adaptations of the big characters, so if it a faithful adaptation has been done once, do people really want to see it again? And the big advantage that manga adaptations have over superhero comics is that manga generally don't have a million different versions of a story/characters, so it's way easier to both get into them and choose what to adapt. And of course, manga generally gets to end, and not have to go on forever and ever. With the super long running stuff like One Piece being more the exception. And granted, its not like they don't get cut short like how some superhero stuff do ( because of having to setup crossover shit, or the obligatory reboot ), because sometimes they do get cut short and might have to give the story and abrupt and unsatisfying end like with Hunter's Guild Red Hood. And even anime reboots tend to be the exception, like with Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood and Hunter X Hunter 2011, both being more faithful adaptations of the source material compared to their first adaptations. Also I say superhero comics instead of western comics because chuds always really mean them when saying manga good, western comic bad. Because it's always panels from Marvel/DC rather than non-superhero comics like Bone or Monster Allergy.
hey man i wanted to thank you for putting this show on my radar i gave it a watch back when it first came out but i stopped watching but after watching your video i gave it another try and i really found myself enjoying it so thanks a lot
On the direct adaptation of the comics note, didn't some Marvel cartoon back in the 60's just take that panels from Jack Kirby's Avengers comics and more or less just turn them into a motion comic?
Sadly I know several people who most likely wouldn't watch this or Invincible because they're animated. It's not like I'm not trying to introduce people to it, but they're stuck in this mindset that cartoons were always this "Kids" thing but Cartoons have grown up and can be just as adult as half the R-Rated shit we grew up watching and can be good with the right individuals involved...
The accuracy to the source material point is little tricky, because some of the all-time best works have been inaccurate adaptations of pre-existing source material. Stanley Kubrick's Shining and Steven Spielberg's Jaws are two pretty famous examples.
Yeah, there’s like even a UA-cam channel that was specifically about pointing out the many differences between the source material of the books and their adaptations
Xavier, if you want some more stuff that uses regeneration in a cool fashion, read/watch Ajin; Demi-Human or Undead Unluck. There’s a greater emphasis on the way their respective regeneration works and there’s a ton of creative solutions
Not really difficult TBH. I mean just look at the MCU in general; or the Lionsgate Ultimate Avengers movies. Who knows what will happen when Nemesis eventually get an adaptation
12:00 "if there was ever a deadpool animated series, i hope they do shit with his regeneration half as cool as this" there is a new anime called undead unluck though it may be abit gross from the nudity and shit. essentially, there's this girl, fuuko, she has unluck, anyone that makes physical contact with her will get bad luck. and then there's andy.. a dude who is undead. a person who physically can't die and seeks death. learning of unluck, he hopes to get a big enough unluck to finally kill him. he can cut his legs and use his regenerating blood to create a constant pressurized stream of blood to fly and shit. using regeneration on command to shoot out his fingers with the same blood jets
I think the reason why we don’t see one to one and animations of comic books is because of the differences between them. Usually manga is one long story but with comics there are multiple book of the same characters multiple writers that come in and out. On top of that people who watch an anime and want to know more will likely buy the manga. But as we have seen with comic book movies, they don’t seem to have that same effect. So I think companies are afraid of doing animations because they with it will replace the books and hurt book sales. That’s just my guess
You're primarily talking about marvel and DC. Comics outside of the Big 2 are one long story just like manga. Also look at adaptations like road to perdition, sin City, 300, watchmen invincible, kick ass, sandman, sweet tooth and v for vendetta which for the most part are faithful adaptations of comics
@@izuto727 Not always the best idea, most super-heroes have changed drastically since their debut, being passed down through a lot of writers, through generations, being slowly molded into what we currently know them as. Take Peter Parker for example, his characterization throughout each decade changed A LOT, Peter on the original run by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko is a completely different character from today's Peter, and I'm not even talking about Zeb Well's Peter. Not only the character changed but the way comics were written and were presented changed a lot too, a faithful adaptation of those early comics would completely clash with pretty much everyone.
I hope marvel makes a mangaverse anime with the voice cast consisting of various English dub voice actors especially ones that have voiced a marvel character in their career to reprise their role as said marvel character.
I felt that when you said you were into Mark Millar books when you were 14 and angry at the world. Same story for me. The less I’m reminded of those embarrassing times the better. I’ll definitely check Super Crooks though. It seems like it’s on the higher end of Mark Millar’s ouvre. I remember having a similar idea to the story years ago but mine would have been about Flash’s Rogues or analogues thereof. Sounds like a lot of fun.

Ayo are you the dude who reads the wikipedia article for CBT when you click, 'listen to this article?'
hey man i wanted to thank you for putting this show on my radar i gave it a watch back when it first came out but i stopped watching but after watching your video i gave it another try and i really found myself enjoying it so thanks a lot
Another banger video from the goat
2:05 funny how I just read that panel a few days ago
I liked Jupiter’s legacy. I was actually disappointed to find out that they cancelled it
Oh hey it’s the dancing lights meme
the spider man guy
Gotta say anime is better than the comic..... because let's be honest the anime cuts out the honestly kinda anti gay stuff the comic had.
Fine I’ll watch super crook’s again
I was so afraid this show would be like The Boy's where everyone with powers are huge assholes because "it's realistic" but I'm glad I was wrong
On the direct adaptation of the comics note, didn't some Marvel cartoon back in the 60's just take that panels from Jack Kirby's Avengers comics and more or less just turn them into a motion comic?
Yeah. The Marvel Super Heroes Show is what it is called. Those cartoons were Canadian produced
Finally, you uploaded after all these years.
He literally uploaded 3 weeks ago 😭
Jonna Scott is also voice acting eon from ben 10 for the 5yl project
Sadly I know several people who most likely wouldn't watch this or Invincible because they're animated. It's not like I'm not trying to introduce people to it, but they're stuck in this mindset that cartoons were always this "Kids" thing but Cartoons have grown up and can be just as adult as half the R-Rated shit we grew up watching and can be good with the right individuals involved...
AGREE! Millar's run on Superman is GREAT! Especially his run on Superman Adventures
I'm happy to see more super crooks love, the music from the show just goes too hard.
Oh my God, I've said this before. The superior foes. Spider man villain team should so get a movie If I end up becoming a director I'm gonna make it.
This was a damn enjoyable show. I just wishbwe had more animated Utopian
Love when Netflix licenses a anime then leaves it to die on the vine
Another Mark Miller adaptation being better than the comic? That's amazing.
Not really difficult TBH.
I mean just look at the MCU in general; or the Lionsgate Ultimate Avengers movies.
Who knows what will happen when Nemesis eventually get an adaptation
It's not amazing it's expected
12:00 "if there was ever a deadpool animated series, i hope they do shit with his regeneration half as cool as this"
there is a new anime called undead unluck though it may be abit gross from the nudity and shit.
essentially, there's this girl, fuuko, she has unluck, anyone that makes physical contact with her will get bad luck. and then there's andy.. a dude who is undead. a person who physically can't die and seeks death.
learning of unluck, he hopes to get a big enough unluck to finally kill him. he can cut his legs and use his regenerating blood to create a constant pressurized stream of blood to fly and shit. using regeneration on command to shoot out his fingers with the same blood jets
HIT-MONKEY IS GETTING A SEASON TWO?!? FUCK YEAH!
15:29 funny enough early anime was all about adapting English books into anime
I've been upset about Santa clarita diet for years!!!
3:26 spiderchad😳
We don’t talk about Jupiter’s legacy
I only just heard about Trouble a few days ago and I still haven't processed its existence.
This show became a meme when it came out.
I hope this video gets more people talking about Super Crooks
Pretty sad this show went SO unnoticed
I have a solution, just adapt the comic that is written by the original creator first
@@izuto727 Not always the best idea, most super-heroes have changed drastically since their debut, being passed down through a lot of writers, through generations, being slowly molded into what we currently know them as.
I personally liked super crooks it was really awesome and a fun show in my opinion.
Check out Huck, starlight, reborn, prodigy, space bandits, and superior as well.
Show gets ignore just the same as games on Steam, videos on youtube or any digital platform: Algorithms. If it´s not new, and if it doesn´t share tags with previous things you have watched, the digital store ignores the product in your profile. And the neccesity of this digital services to shit out content every second makes it harder for anyone to relly on anything beyond those algorithms. None of this platforms are comfortable to navigate and you need to invest a time that almost nobody has to find one thing you may enjoy more than the shit you get recomended or not, so it becomes a worthless ephor for most people.
Good video! Spider-Man 2 Review when lil bro 😈
I'm editing it as we speak. Though it's going to be at least an hour long so it's gonna take some time. Hit that stupid bell icon thing so you don't miss it when it's ready!
God, I miss Santa Clarita Diet. Literally my favourite show.
I'll definitely have to check this out
I would love to hear your thoughts on IDWs Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics.
