    Im a building owner and have never been satisfied by what local gypsum finishers provide as the acceptable level of finish. AND I like to do things on my own. So your videos are extremely helpful. I've been developing my skills over the past 5 years and am becoming satisfied with what I can produce as finished work. I've gotten to the point of being able to patch large areas successfully. Your videos are very very helpful. Many Thanks.

    Hi Paul thank you for the videos. I have an identical project to do and your lessons are invaluable. I’ve tried to hire someone but anyone any good is booked solid or doesn’t want a small job like this. So few people going into these trades. I’ve done some drywall repairs in the past but not to this scale. Thanks again.

    I’m taking the texture off all the ceilings in my house. I was quoted some astronomical prices so I just went and bought nice stuff to work with and am doing it myself. Your videos are very helpful. I bought the festool Planex because I hate dust. At first I tried sanding a room smooth then skim coating…for the type of texture I have it works much better for me to sand lightly to knock off the high spots but leave some of the texture. This makes it 10000 times easier to skim back smooth. Then I sand lightly and I’m done, and no sanding through like before.

    Been doing plastering and skim coating way too often it seems in too many houses over a lot of years. But I really enjoying the looks of the job when I'm done. The thing I've used to get my finish coat smooth is a long paint edging blade. So when i saw the Tomahawk tool you are using I had to chuckle, "someone stole my idea". LOL Looks good.

    diyer, i just skimmed coated my daughters bedroom ceiling. about a 12 x 12 room. my 1st time. watched your videos in the past for tips and also watch the drywall doctor. i have learned a lot and can get most jobs done now. obviously would never claim to be as efficient as pro and i respect the skillset you life long drywall guys have built up. I love doing drywall though its such a challenge and so rewarding when you make wall problems disappear. its like magic really. anyhow on my ceiling i did not have that 36 in blade like yours. i bought like a 24in rubber tool. i don't actually know if it was meant for drywall but based on the results with that one, it didn't work out well and just used the 14in knife.

    . I have a portion of my ceiling at my house that I fixed before I bought your sponges and that part of the ceiling is already primed and painted. I used the spray can stuff and now that the area is primed and painted it looks like crap to me. I want to get it more evened out but my question is, should I use kills or zinser 123 primer in it before new mud?

    I’m a DIYer and have wanted to skim coat walls for years but I kept choosing other tasks because I was so worried I would mess up. But your video really got me motivated and I started yesterday. I’ve got a flat orange peel so my question is do I just scrap on enough to make it flat where I can almost see thru it or do I need a thicker layer? I don’t have a mixer so I’m using the premix pink stuff until I really know what im doing. It helps me see where im at and how thick. Also Im interested in the gentle sweeps you need in some new builds. All I can find online is called Spanish knife but those are heavier than I want.

    Hi, I am a novice at this. Thank you so much for your videos. They are a Godsend. I have a lot to learn but I'm enjoying the process. I am remodeling my 1920's home. My question: Can I apply skim coat on top of paint or wall paper? I had been removing old layers of wallpaper and there is plaster underneath. I repaired the cracks and a few broken laths. It would be so much simpler if I could just coat the rooms that still have wallpaper.

    • @PaulPeck
      @PaulPeck  3 роки тому

      I appreciate that Kitty!👍🏻 It’s a best practice to remove wallpaper first. But, if the wallpaper is adhered really good and has no bubbles it can be skim coated over. Just pay special attention to the corners. I hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching and commenting my friend! -Paul

    I’m not a pro drywaller, but I would think that a 24” blade would give you adequate results on the ceiling and speed up the job? You’re a pro drywall guy so it looks easy with the 32” blade. A 24” skim blade can connect to a pole and applied from the ground. I saw a video where they did your trick and rolled out the ceiling with a 1 1/4” nap roller. The nap seemed excessive since then your trying to level out a thick layer. the shorter 24” blade on the ceiling and walls is easier for DIYers. Just working overhead for most people is tricky if they don’t have the physical ability and stamina. Just my $.02. Good video!!

    I'm a home owner who started doing drywall with my dad as a college student on summer break. He was a home builder. He needed a second person to hold a sheet of drywall up on a ceiling while he nailed it up and I was volunteered. I loved doing the work. In those days it was a hammer and drywall nails. He gave me the pan and trowel and some explanation and I went to work. The only problem is that once you do your own texture, you become very critical of the trowel work of others. And every time I paint a room in my house, I end up redoing the texture first. It needs to be updated. And I'm looking at the texture and thinking about what I think of the job I did in my own house all the time. My next will be removing the popcorn ceiling and covering with texture in my bedroom. How many coats should i do if i want a smooth look. Or will that show any imperfections in the drywall and that be a concern?Do need to use a drywall primer/ sealer paint coat first or just use the ceiling paint. No I don't have any water damage and patch repairs will be screw holes from drapery brackets. I would appreciate your wisdom. I'll have a couple of weeks of preparation so there is time for any response.

    • @PaulPeck
      @PaulPeck  День тому +1

      Because there was a skip trowel texture originally on the ceiling. And when you use a roller to apply to skim coating mud it has to be thin enough to roll. But, when you’re putting it on by hand you can do a thicker basecoat that will cover the texture more which helps you not have to do a third skim coat potentially. Great question. Thanks so much for watching and commenting my friend!👍🏻😎

    How big was the room? 10x10? You mentioned it took about an hour for first coat.

    Why did you choose to hand apply to the ceiling vs a paint roller method ?

    • @PaulPeck
      @PaulPeck  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Jennifer, because to use the roller you have to thin down the joint compound a good bit. And this ceiling had a pretty heavy texture on it so I wanted to keep as much body of the joint compound as possible so the skim coat wouldn’t be too thin over the skip trowel texture. Great question! Thanks so much for watching and commenting. - Paul

    Retired guy flipping 100 year old house just for fun. It has lathe and plaster walls with what looks like a type of plain wallpaper (or maybe just a really thick layers of paint). I scrape off any loose stuff, prime it with an oil based primer, skim coat it, prime again, then two coats of paint. Any comments?

    I watched one of your videos and found my way to Amazon to consider purchasing one of those Tomahawks. They were sold out and didn't know when they would get any more product. I then watched "That Kilted Guy" and he uses Level 5 drywall products. I bought a 24" blade, an adapter and a handle. I have NO IDEA how well such a thing will work on a stick/handle. I also can't afford stilts. And I laid down a layer of mud onto the ceiling with a 6 inch knife. Honestly, I have bought:
    1 six inch knife
    1 4 inch knife
    one 14 inch taping knife
    one 12 inch taping knife
    One of those flat things that you scrape mud off of
    one plastic trowel for mud
    one metal trowel for mud
    some cheap plastic knives
    and now the Level 5 tools.
    I am too arthritic to try to use those long taping knives again. I am too weak to hold a trowel full of heavy mud. I can't spread for shit with a big knife. I already fired and removed a coat of the useless lightweight mud some Spanish guy had put on the ceiling. They didn't even SAND and scrape the ceiling. I LOST $1,300 and now I'm fixing the ceiling myself. And I probably exposed myself to a lot of dust with some level of asbestos. Oh well, nobody wants to help an old man of 60 who lives alone who doesn't have a lot of money. So I have UA-camRS like P. an Kilted Guy to guide me. I appreciate the videos MIGHTILY!!!
