From the German commentary: "HE HAS NOT DONE THIS FOR AUSTRIA, HE HAS NOT DONE THIS FOR GERMANY! HE HAS DONE THIS FOR SUSANNE! AND MATHIAS STEINER IS OLYMPIC CHAMPION!"
"You are looking at the strongest man in the world" ... I get goosebumps every time I hear this comment. That's the one moment you are training for your whole life.
To an extent, I think the German ones captured it even better. Excerpt: "Lift it up, Lift iI Up, LIFT IT UP!!! (pause) HE HAS NOT DONE THIS FOR AUSTRIA, HE HAS NOT DONE THIS FOR GERMANY! HE HAS DONE THIS FOR SUSANNE! AND MATHIAS STEINER IS AN OLYMPIC CHAMPION!"
this is one of my favorite sports moments of all time. it's right up there with Derrick Redmon finishing a race with a torn hamstring. Almost makes me cry.
+10kg PR on final C&J of the Olympic games for Gold (after a missed first C&J attempt). Could there be any more pressure? Insane performance, 10kg PR in that circumstance is absurd.
Sometimes it needs more than strength to be the strongest. Awesome commentary. I cried. You can see it in his eyes: Before, he despised the lift. After, he loved it.
Absolutely remarkable. One of the most motivating & moving stories I've seen on UA-cam. The facial expressions expressed the raw determination & hunger inside this amazing Human Being...
Well... my mother died 2 years ago, November 27th, i play basketball, so past november i had this unique chance, i had a game on november 26th, we were playing against a school, guys that trained together for the whole year... We were just a bunch of friends who love the game, i scored 26 points, from deep, taking it to the hoop, mid range, i was unstoppable, no one could stay in front of me or stop me. And the whole time, my mom was on my mind and heart. 86-85, in overtime.
He showed the limits that the human body can go to. I appreciate people who bring the "impossible" into the possible. That is what he did, and it is appreciative. Not to mention he promised his wife an olympic medal and pushed through all the obstacles to achieve it. You sir should appreciate what he did. Am I supposed to be impressed by your degrading comment as you sit, browsing youtube and demean extraordinary accomplishments?
I must have watched the replay of this guy on the nbc website after it happened in 2008 a gazillion times. His celebration is frickin hilarious but also so emotional, it brings tears to your eyes. Simply amazing.
For those who don’t know, he dedicated his win in the Beijing 2008 Weightlifting Olympics by the death of his late wife, his wife had died in a car accident months prior.
Inspiration: "German Olympic weightlifter Matthias Steiner promised his wife that one day he would win a gold medal in the Olympics. Just a month before the competition, his wife tragically died in a car accident. In order to break the record, he needed to beat his personal record by more than 20 kg. This is the video of his attempt at the gold medal."
it's so inspirational because he promised his wife he would win a gold medal for her. she died in a car accident before the olympics. that's why he's so ecstatic, that's why he's so happy, that's why everyone is happy for him, and that's why he's a champion.
I called this event alomgside Damien for channel 7, to this day i tell the story of how we were their watching the strongest man in the world lift the roof off with a broken heart. - Pete
I personally never truly understood the concept of weightlifting as a sport. But seeing his face and the competition, is simply amazing. Olympics is going to be so exciting!
If there's a god, then he made him win. If there's none, then he did win by himself. No matter what, it was all right! One of the greatest gold medals ever won!
We are admiring the mental and emotional strength. His physical strength has nothing to do with the power of this video. "the most shallow viewers" are the ones who can't see that.
Steiner recently announced his retirement from weightlifting. He's always been a favourite of mine, from his inspiring effort in this video to his spectacular accident at the 2012 London games. I wish him all the best.
Steiner pulls the weight up, hefting it onto his chest. The one final thing he must do is lift it above his head. More sheer strength than any human being in the world could possibly do. He thinks about being the best of the best, he thinks about the triumph, the gold, the accolades, the fame, the fortune. But then, he thinks of his wife.
he wasn't even supposed to be able to clean that weight. imagine the adrenaline when he actually stood up with it. "HE'S DOING IT! HE'S DOING IT! HOLY SHIT HE'S DOING IT!"
When a man makes a promise, he keeps it.
Look up "Oscar De La Hoya US Olympic Hall of Fame." He also made a promise.
@@LaserrSharp no one cares
Unless you are a tour bus driver.
For her.
@Hyperboreer sapere aude Nah, mate.
Country pride is one thing, your love for your wife is another.
For her.
In my opinion, this is the greatest moment in weightlifting ever. It's from more than 10 years ago, but it's warming my heart since then.
The moment he hears the signal and drops the bar. Must've been thee most releasing moment in his life.
there is an interview with him on the olympic channel where he did say exactly what u suspect.
Makes my eyes sweat.

Fantastic broadcasters absolutely capturing the emotion of the moment.

Once upon a time, Matthias Steiner was the happiest man in the world.
