I’m 74 years old have never owned a boat and have no plans to ever have a boat. However, I really enjoy watching you and your dad work on the boat and your other channel. I subscribe to both channels and no need to apologize for ads - it’s part of life. Keep doing what you’re doing.
You'll Never Lose Sight Of The Definition Of The Word "BOAT" = Bust Out Another Thousand, Right?! Not To Mention All The Frikken Hard Work In-between, Mate! Hats Off To You Tim!😎
Tim, I don't have a problem with you adding advertising to the channel as that is going to help you a lot; thing is let people know to let those ads run otherwise the UA-cam algorithms won't work right. That BMW engine is coming up a treat and should push Kiara along rather nicely. I have built a few engines before and tolerances are there for a bloody good reason and I ain't no machinist but you can do my machining for me!! hahaha
Thanks mate I appreciate the support 👍. I'm very happy with the way it's all coming together and can't wait to see how Kiarra performs with the new engine.
mmm, a little bigger motor than my circa 1950's villiers on the lawnmower i just bought lol. as always, even the technical stuff you make it understandable. cheers, Frank
Another great video mate. It is really impressive watching you working on that motor. I wish i had the room and the gear to do the same thing so i could put a new motor in my boat. Maybe one day 😂😂.
Thanks mate, perhaps one day mate. Never know what the future holds, I do have a Perkins here that needs a rebuild 😁. That was going to be the new engine for Kiarra until the BMW came up.
Like your good self I hated drawings where the tolerances were unclear or in my case wrong 4weeks work down the drain 😅, it takes me back watching you working on the engine and funny how you only remember the good times😊. Good to see you painted with a light colour as it makes finding leaks easier, not that you'll have any I'm sure 😊, me I would have gone with a dayglow orange 😅. Anyway on a more serious note if you ever find you need a part from Europe UK but they're reluctant to ship down under I'm happy for you to have them ship to me and I'll forward them onto your goodself also I'll be happy to search for parts at my end as smaller companies might not show up on your searches. All the best Gary 🇬🇧🇬🇧
Hey Gary, Yeah time really does make us forget the bad ( to an extent 😞) and let's the good shine. I was going to paint it white but they didn't have any and the silver is very close to the factory colour. Thanks for the offer to help with parts shipping mate I may just have to take you up on that sometime. Cheers
Watching this brought back memories of rebuilding my 290,big cam Cummins in my truck . Over Christmas outside in the weather (UK) . Had the injectors serviced and the pump re calibrated to give a “little” bit more grunt . Made my friends with bigger newer kit surprised at the difference so it was all worth it . Good to see you putting in the work on this project, it always pays to do it right the first time . There is a follow up on this , maybe tell you another time.
Thanks mate, I'm a massive fan of older style mechanical injection on bigger diesels. I like the reliability they come with and as you mentioned can be turned to hold there own against the more modern gear too.
I love watching engines being rebuilt. I find the clean and meticulous process soothing. I will say UA-cam rewards longer videos with a wider audience so you might want to do a little less time lapse and just talk through what you're doing a bit more. I think it will be worth your time monetarily.
@@HarpersBoatShed Crankcase venting was an issue, not enough. Add a bypass filter to try to keep the oil clean Larger sump would help We had a few in commercial use and issues were dirty oil based. Did the Merc ones have anything special on the crankcase venting?
Thanks mate, I think when they went to the one piece rocker cover it could have changed but not enough sure. Good advice putting a filter in to catch the oil vapour though I will now be doing this.
Ads are something we all live with on the tube Tim, forget about it and just get on with enjoying yourself mate... maybe even building some crazy shit along the way too 😉
Looking good, will you gain extra speed with this engine , over the current unit. I'm surprised you didn't skim the manifold mating surfaces , but then there isn't any high pressures apart from exhaust gases and cooling water? On the roof and timber work, I think I suggest silver quandong(mountain ash) you can also use CLEAR HOOP PINE, clear =no knots. As for plywood for the roof and deck, good quality BC plywood with a waterproof glue line and minimal knots and voids in the plys will work, especially when you seal with epoxy resin and glass cloth. Polyester resin will work, but does not have the affinity with timber that epoxy does. Good luck mate , I enjoy your videos.
I am hoping that this engine should get me up around the 18knots full throttle and hopefully cruise around 12knots but have to wait and see if that's what happens. Thank you for the timber information mate, any advice on wood selection is greatly appreciated.
Your certainly a worker, that looks like an engine thats built to do some work, I reckon thats going to be much better than the old engine. It always sounded to be on its limit. Great video regards Mike UK
Hey mate, yeah she is a sold engine that's for sure. The old 4 cylinder is doing a good job for now but I agree long term it will wear out from being pushed harder then designed.
This is terrific...that engine will push your boat efficiently. The BMW design is similar to the 71 series Detroit diesels. Is it two cycle like the Detroit?
Good question mate. I would estimate this setup to be around 100kg heavier ( engine and outdrive) combined. I don't see that being a big issue with the way the vessel behaves and I will be reinforcing the engine beds and transom to help with the weight and also the extra power.
Your saying sorry for ads. Mate that's the best news I have heard all week. Question. If we ff or skip the ad does that change anything $$ wise? Ur going ing from a gutless chev 6 to a torque monster. You got the outdrive but wasn't that on a bad motor right? The part of this dumpster fire 😂 is the transom. Yikes
Hey mate, I'm not entirely sure how it works with skipping adds but I would assume I get paid less if you don't watch them. The engine that's in there is on a 3lt 4cyl mate not even a V6. I actually have a choice of 3 outdrives to strip down and use all the best parts to make one good one.
As an aside, what is the difference, in weight between the engine you currently have in the boat and the replacement BMW unit? And how will the extra weight of the BMW alter (?) the trim of the boat. - JCH
I estimate the BMW and outdrive will be 100kg heavier than the MerCruiser. I'm not too worried it effecting the trim of the vessel. It would act like there is another big adult sitting on the back seat so no real difference
@@HarpersBoatShed that's what the missus is for, to read the instructions and tell you you are doing it wrong, it's in her job description as the missus.
I don't hold BMW cars in high regard what so ever. I will agree that I'm not a big fan of the cylinder head layout either. However these D190 and D636 engines have a long proven history in fishing trawlers and know to be solid and reliable engines if maintained ( also helps that BMW had nothing to do with the design of the engine)
The original engine is a VM Motori that is built in Italy. Not sure if I trust that any more then BMW but they do have good pedigree and have been building industrial diesel engines for a long time.

Turbo engines have huge blowby so lots of carbon to filter out of the oil.

Very interesting and informative. Will this engine weigh more than the current engine in the boat? If so, is that a concern for boat performance?
