NEA Opera Honors: Tribute to Martina Arroyo

Introduction to the career and influence of soprano Martina Arroyo, 2010 NEA Opera Honors recipient. In a career of over 50 years, Ms. Arroyo performed all of the major Verdi roles as well principal roles in a wide range of other operas. The breadth of Arroyo's work is reflected in countless recordings of major operas and orchestral works.

Great lady. Wonderful speaking voice and articulation. Once you heard a role or piece by her, it became impossible to abandon the sound.

Maybe one of the very few real Verdi's soprano. Better high notes than Tebaldi, better low notes than Price, more idiomatic than Nilsson, the richness and the clarity of tone quasi unique, not to mention perfect artistic integrity (never sang badly a role absolutly not for her or decade too late). A rare person.
