- Frost is something that every gardener hates, but even more so when your fruit bushes and trees are coming out of dormancy and fruiting. This method will help protect the fruit, flowers, and growth so that you can enjoy fruit instead of just dreaming about it until next year!

in January 2017 a 4 day period where the high was 19 killed all of our citrus trees. The nursery where we went to get more told us to cut them off about 2 inches above the ground and they most likely would come back. Of course, we were skeptical but decided to give it a few months to see. Sure enough, as soon as the weather began to warm little green shoots came up from the stumps. By fall they were as tall as the previous growth. This year, thanks to this video, we were able to keep EVERY ONE of them from freezing! Our neighbors thought we had lost our minds as they saw us bubble wrapping and sacking the trees but we didn't lose ours while they did.
I would loose my mind cutting the poor trees to stumps. Definitely bubble wrap is the trick.
Mary Ann, I would like to know if you used this method all winter or for a few cold nights? I’m in Atlanta Ga. We planted a few citrus trees this spring and I wanna make sure their protected of the winter. Thanks

Non LED Christmas lights are great too. They give off a little heat and some come as nets just lay them down and plug in the fun ;)

Good idea with the bubble wrap.
Bubble wrap is definitely one of the components of our fig tree wrap over the winter. We're in northern Utah (zone 7).
If the roots die it’s over basically so it’s better to make sure to wrap the bottom around the pot and near the base and add some pine straw as a topper as well. You can still wrap around the tree branches as well but a tarp of plastic covering should do it. It’s all about the roots because if those freeze then it’s over. The branches are fine and if any damage and grow new cells. You can’t regrow roots what’s they’re dead. God bless

Funny how this video was recommended to me after the video from recently about not using plastic.
The difference is the bubble wrap has pockets of air in it whereas if you wrap your plant in a plastic sheet, that will NOT insulate your plants.

This past week I put in peppers, tomatoes, kale, cabbage, green beans, Brussell sprouts, and the spinach, lettuce, radishes have popped up. INow its going to get to 28 tonight and in a couple of days its going to snow. AND its terribly windy! I am so disheartened, because I spent the day making 9' x 3' arbor like covers out of fence wire and Visqueen, Another gardener I've just watched has said never to use Visqueen because plastic makes vapor inside and that will certainly add to the cold and kill the plants. He also said to hose the garden down before covering the plants (with some kind of paper.) I was hoping this video would tell us how to protect the young plants, so I'll keep searching to see if you have provided a video on them, too. Some of the plants I've covered with empty flower pots and buckets and have put on bricks to hold them down. Some of the plants I've covered with little Amazon boxes, and put bricks on to hold those down, too. I am glad to see you have used plastic, because that makes me feel a little better about the Visqueen huts I'm using. Tomorrow I'll take everything down, then in a couple of days I'll need to put them back up....if anything is left alive. This is the first time I've gotten Brussel sprout seeds to grow as these are. Keeping my fingers crossed they make it. Oh, also on some of the plants I piled hemp hurd over that just so happened to arrive today. I hope one of what I've done works. sigh.......I cannot believe its going to below 30 tonight and then giving snow in a couple of days....sigh.....

Thank you. That was helpful :-) my trees pros and the branches died. I used burlap with plastic trash bag over the top. Apparently it didn't work :-/ hopefully bubble wrap will do a much better job.

can I wrap a young avocado tree this way? Nursery told me to tent the tarp over so as not to touch the leaves if the get wet and freeze?
Concerning citrus, I thought that your leaf and weed blocker video suggested that we just protect the roots? When should we do both? 8 degrees F is the lowest I've seen in my area ever. Thanks for your help.

You've been doing this for a long long time. What peach trees do you have and which one is the best? Love the video man. I actually wish food growers and teachers of it got rich on UA-cam. Im in Massachusetts and we get alots of between 28 degrees to -5 sometimes. All though this winter was so mild. It was 58 degrees here on Xmas. I know because i took my motorcycle out for a ride. This winter was soooo mild that i was and still am concerned that the trees didn't reach their chill hours.

Don't know where you came up with your degrees of protection. It's about time. Insulation just slows the time at which the heat is lost. If it is 20 degrees outside for a certain amount of time the inside will become 20 degrees.

they dont need sunlight while they r wrapped? i had a "cold hardy" palm tree, yep in mich. so i wrapped it but was concerned about it getting sunlight, do u unwrap daily or wat do u do
I believe we have to unwrap daily, then re wrap if the temp drops again. This time of year the prevention is only for overnight....not like all winter long. That's my two cents on the topic.
what do you do about kale plants how do you protect them from frost
If I have annuals, like tomatoes, carrots and garlic. What advise could you give for those? Put and take it away everyday? Or other option?? Thanks!!!
If my new trees are in a fenced enclosure can I wrap a wind screen around the fencing with the trees being approximately 4 ft away from fence ??

When the tree has no leaves and no buds, there's not a need to wrap, in my experience.
My question, too. What if it never gets above freezing the next day?

I have a plastic jug, you know those Really big plastic jugs that had cheese puffs in them. Well i put the empty jug over my small tomato plant and put a blanket over that. Does this sound ok?

can you please make a video about bougainvillea: the soil type, the nutritions required..when to add them..what mistakes we should avoid..cause I have this plant and I'm just helpless it's not blooming and it's pretty much just a stick with few leaves. thanks for your videos by the way they help me a lot
He tends to stick to vegetable and fruit gardening. Bougainvillea are said to grow like weeds. I pretty well neglect mine but it always comes back in spring with flowers. Maybe try pruning some and giving it some phosphorous fertilizer.
LuvCali28 mine is in a pot. I did everything and still wouldn't grow leaves or flowers, it's not dead since I'm seeing a leaf here and there but it looks lifeless. Thanks anyways.
Mine is in a pot as well. It sat in the sun, hardly watered it, haven't fertilized this year....and the flowers are all coming about.
Perhaps you haven't reached the correct weather/temperature yet.

Bougainvilleas require full sun, as much sun as you can give them. They will bloom nicely.
The suggestions arent bad on here for gardening tips but its pretty simple stuff might i suggest edible acres. Theres alot more info on sustainable living and know how on permiculture gardening and policultures. I think this guy is great belive me but lately there has been alot of wining about corner lots then gardening
Great, now show us on a larger tree
Larger tree should have some form of bark on then, unless tropical thin. This bark growth should have started 4-5 years.. Now my Avocado trees do have bark, but it's considered slightly to thin for Zone 7 winter. So i do place a tight weather paper wrap on them from dirt base to the very first main arm. I do this because this tree is use to tropical conditions. I don't use any clear wraps, because anything clear would allow the sun in from winter. Winter in Zone 5-6 and sometimes 7 can have a few days of freaky hot sun. My Zone is 7 which is Desert in nature, and is prone to having very good days in the winter. These good days can wake up a tropical tree from it's shut down, and thus cause frost bite in the lower base. {due to still winter :(}. I lay a heavy mulch on the surface to prevent the top 2 feet of dirt becoming to cold and i wrap the tree. The tree needs little to no water in the winter... If i get a weather report that we will have 1 or 2 days of 75 in winter = desert weather from winter lol. I will water the tree very early in the morning, not much. You can kill a tree from to much water in winter. "remember it's kind of asleep and should look like it's dead" nothing but stems/trunks.
Plastic is not supposed to touch your tree talking from experience it will burn it

not sure why your wrapping a tree in bubble wrap. Trees naturalize on their own and over insulating doesn't allow them to adapt to the climate. and seeing how that looks like a fruit tree. they need a deep frost to produce a productive harvest. the bags also blocking light from getting to the tree.
If you actually look at the date this was filmed...it's early May, extremely late for a freeze and that can destroy your harvest for the year. One or two days without light is not going to harm it
