  • Oscar was rescued in mid-November, 2012, emaciated and exhausted from a long flight from the Arctic. Over two months later, he's finally healthy enough for release. Here's a glimpse of him in the flight pen, which has been divided so that the Bald Eagles have most of the space. The eagles can be noisy if they bang the tarp barrier that separates the two sections...

The Snowy Owls that are part of the irruptions are usually juvenile males, but it's not always the case. These are the young ones that have yet to establish a territory so are forced out, in search of food. We're waiting to find out where we can release him - he was found in Port Hardy, but doesn't really 'belong' there, since he'll migrate back to the Arctic. If we can release him in the Comox Valley we will. According to our permits, birds must be release within 10 km of their rescue site.

The eagles were probably just doing some exercising and misjudged - they don't seem to have learned that they can't grab the slippery partition and they bounce off it, at times. It's a heavy tarp and is flexible, so they don't hurt themselves. They probably don't even realize there's an owl on the other side.

Why are the eagles slamming into the barrier? Do they not like being so close to Oscar?

FYI young male snowy owls tend to look like females.
