    Just as a reminder for Northern Americans: in Europe we don't have in/out of bounds for avalanche safety. Everything off the marked slopes/routes is your own responsibility and you're supposed to understand the avalanche risk level and have your own avalanche gear with you. Seeing them riding powder without any gear is irresponsible and can cause huge risks up to death. Ride powder but be smart! You want to enjoy your drinks after riding with your friends and not lay in a coffin (if they can find you)...

    • @Chris11249
      @Chris11249 19 годин тому

      Yes. As cool as this video was, it was not poweder "hunting." It was powder abuse. There's a reason there's so many untracked lines on those faces--the avy danger was probably moderate or more that day on those aspects

    Nice video guys. It’s funny when civilised people from North America see how we do lift lines/mosh pits in Europe 😂… as for riding the most extreme ‘runs’ the way it works in Europe is the really gnarly lines (like your black diamond shoots) are not listed on the trail maps, you need to buy a local ‘off piste’ guide book, (and some avi gear) or take a look at the fat maps app. Then you’ll find what you are looking for! Enjoying 😊

    • @heinzhaupthaar5590

      Fatmaps is gone for good though.
      Wasn't able to find a remotely proper replacement yet, deleted most apps right away after a brief look because they really sckd mad bags of Richard.
      If there's any viable ones, I mean really viable, I'd really appreciate the input.

      100% is 45 degree, not a cliff for basejumping. some black pistes in europe are 70 degree. if u fall, u go all way down to the end more or less alive ( powder or packed)and your chances to get back on the board are very slim, the harder the snow is.

    Man, what an awesome experience. I know there is still a lot of debate about step ons. I just recently made the switch. I did not purchase CLEW's, although I do like the design. I went with the Burton Genesis Step ons, mostly because it's a brand I'm familiar with. But, If I get an opportunity to ride a set of CLEW's, I'm definitely gonna try them. I'd like to compare the differences. I was a bit hesitant to make the switch to step ons, but now that I have, I really don't want to go back to traditional straps. it's so nice! I appreciate your contribution to the snowboarding community and how cool that CLEW is giving you this opportunity, truly amazing!.

    Fun video. But on a serious note you spend a lot of time off piste, with no back pack, so no shovel or probe am guessinng, were you wearing a transceiver? I know you'll be used to the North American inbounds system, still important to stay as safe as possible!

    • @thedude669
      @thedude669 11 місяців тому +4

      Was going to say something similar. Yeah it’s great having no rules / boundaries but none of the off piste is guaranteed safe. I’ve been on resort when people have been killed by a slide 10m from a groomed slope before.

    • @JohnathanBuckhouse
      @JohnathanBuckhouse  11 місяців тому +8

      We brought our beacons. Didn’t bring the other stuff but also didn’t go into serious avalanche terrain till the last two runs with our guide, who was already playing in the zone all day. We also knew at that point of the day how the snow pack was reacting so those last two runs were risks we were willing to take. Your point is super valid and if Ski doc and I didn’t spend a lot of time in the backcountry we wouldn’t of went out of bounds 🤙🏼

    • @rogerzimmermann9025
      @rogerzimmermann9025 10 місяців тому +6

      @@JohnathanBuckhouse Dude, just bringing your beacon is useless if your buddy gets buried. You're not going to dig him out with your board. Please bring your pack, shovel and probe if you go off piste in Europe, especially if you already spent a lot of time in the backcountry and know what can happen. Also prevents comments from old farts like me. And I know, most of the time nothing happens, but seeing people without a pack riding more serious terrain irritates some people. Oh, and wearing that pack and explaining why makes you a good role model and maybe saves a life or two. You have a bit of responsibility here.

    when you are at the top of a 45° slope you see the slope at an angle of at least 135°, which is not far from an impression of verticality

    As someone from Vorarlberg and who worked as a slope patrol in this exact ski resort, I can't let this video title slide... 😜
    "Riding doen Europe's most extreme terrain."
    and putting "Silvretta Montafon" next to it is blasphemy on its peak.
    Maybe for an outlander who isn't from Europe and doesn't know that many ski resorts here, it is the most extreme terrain... ;D
    Or because the qualifier for the Open Faces is on the Madrisella.
    Here some local views towards this ski resort. Hi, I am the former coordinator in the rescue center, sitting in the Grasjoch Freeride Center (which isn't a "Freeride Center" anymore). They just don't manage to take off the signs and change their ski-resort map..
    Yee you can guess where this is going now ;P
    Nope, I don't work there anymore, due to them being bullies in a negligent level. Spreading medical misinformation, enforcing their wrong opinions on you, and if you try to tell them this can seriously put a patient into life-threatening conditions (which exactly has happened before due to negligence in how to treat patients correctly, they resort in attacking you personally under the belt line. Quit your job for it without actual cancellation.
    Lie to the work department so you will get locked and can't get money you pay taxes for since 10 years. Only all to sh... in your face for trying to help them out and not hurt patients unnecessarily due to their farmer-logic negligence.
    All so far, that even the "Ärztekammer" (like Federal Medical Dpt.) got into this and I had to file reports against certain individuals for these reasons.
    So, in Vorarlberg, this is not because of my experience, which is as bad as for many others.
    Montafon is the most disliked ski resort due to how these people behave. And how much promotion they do online, what they charge for it, and what you actually get, compared to other ski resorts here...
    To guests these people "put on a mask" obviously. It's company policy you sign to start work as usual. But between each other?
    Lol, forget about that. You need to get down on their level and let yourself be treated like a primate. You are not from Montafon? Good, so whatever, you are guilty for it.. always get blamed on you.
    Especially if you are the one in the rescue center and just try to give your best at your job. Which you did every day, since you are medically educated. And basically noone else is... A small first aid course does not count. And slope patrols in Austria need no course or anything to be allowed to do that job...
    Not only that, it also resulted in unprofessional radio discipline for someone (me) who was a marksman in military before...
    It's pure horror.... There is no discipline. They just talk like people who never used a radio before.
    So in Vorarlberg alone, if you really want a decent selection of Freeride faces, you go to St. Anton Warth.
    There is no debate about that. Montafon only promotes themselves like THE Freeride thing in Europe because if the Open Faces qualifier.... And France and Switzerland are cringing away in a dark corner...
    Take Europe's (actual) biggest ski resort?
    "Les 3 Vallées" in France? You pay less for a 6 day pass, no stupid "dynamic price model" for ticket prices.
    You have WAY MORE in anything 😂
    But hej, Montafon always had to sell themselves or noone would go there...
    You saw Valisera cable car during weekend? xD crowd managment does not exist.
    I could tell you WAY more reasons why you should definitely go to St. Anton, Warth or Lech. Especially if you wanna ride rly nice faces.
    You can find extreme couloirs in most areas if the snow conditions are right.
    Or even better, go to Tyrol? Fiss-Serfaus, Ischgl, Stubai...
    There are so many more proper ski resorts. And make it up, Montafon built new lifts, made online promo for crappy events and have made prices higher.
    I am a former event engineer and their managment is...... Smart enough to put a 6-8000W sound system for around 5-6000? people.... I mean....
    They simplt do not catch up what any other resort I know here manages to do.
    This includes, keep their ski-map, information and all up to date and actually do it....
    Or maybe treate seasonal workers nice and learn English. Not blame it on them if they can't understand it when Montafon just doesn't do what they teach them. And then wonder why they can't understand it.
    Or talk dialect while they are already in a German course and get pissed when they need to actually talk German to them. As if they are guilty for it they get hired, try to learn our language and these bigots think it's bad... Like what they want else???
    Not all are like this fortunately.
    But it is overshadowing the good things by far.
    How would you feel? Come from Australia to Austria on a work permit. And wait 2 months after starting your job to get your contract finally after demanding multiple times?
    Another example of many.
    Have fun!

    They are pistes, not runs.
    Pistes are groomed every night, so “I wonder if the others will be groomed” is a meaningless question.
    On this video we saw American snowboarders:
    Sliding down one of the scorpion pistes face first.
    Riding through a tunnel hooting and hollering.
    Riding off piste in area with a bunch of snow fences and jumping onto and off of one.
    Riding a chair lift without lowering the safety bar.
    You are correct, there are no rules about riding off piste. However, these areas are not avalanched controlled nor are they patrolled. If you get hurt and need medical assistance, European mountain rescue is the best in the world but you will be charged for these services.

      @@StasFPV Late but no. His off-piste runs in the later half of the video, riding pow are not labeled trails. They are literally out of bounds freeriding, with no avalanche gear except a beacon that will not help much if both get buried. In europe anything that isnt groomed or specifically labeled as an "ungroomed" piste is considered out of bounds. There is no avalanche mitigation done in europe for these areas and while the alps' ski rescue teams are the best in the world you will be paying quite a hefty sum for them if they ever need to rescue you.
      Get your safety gear, including handshovel, beacon and other avalanche gear if you go off-piste in europe, you will need it.
