- #Bollywood has had a tendency to follow tropes or stereotypes just because they become popular! The fact that something becomes popular does not necessarily mean its great and informed writing! I hope you like the video shedding light on the technical aspects of Bollywood that I have noticed over the years.

People portraying Punjabis as nothing but overly happy people with only Chicken, parantha and daaru on their mind. Also I love how literally almost every Punjabi in Hindi movies is a non-Punjabi actor with the most broken Punjabi accent.
Rocket Singh is an exception
Have u seen , punjabi industry they do the same thing

This is why Queen worked so well, it didn't confine it's protagonist to stereotype, she was authentic to her roots and also the kinda girl who would go on her own honeymoon alone, kiss a foreigner out of curiosity and be absolutely non-judgmental towards others. She didn't need to be a chain smoker sassy urban women for that
Yeah look how they portrayed her Goan best friend

I don’t remember any goan friend she had. What was her name, do you remember? I just remember one friend vijayalaxmi who was french with Indian ethnicity.
I agree bhavika. Like to watch such movies where the characters are believable.

The 'white background dancers' stereotype is just horrible. The fact that our Bollywood portray Black people as harmful, it comes as no shocking to see no black dancers in the background.
perfectly said ...bollywood has always been obsessed with whiteness
Especially blondies. Indians are so much obsessed towards those blonde-hair fair ladies that they are more objectified than Indian girls like, this is racist and sexist as well.
Yup, blatant racism and colorism
It's true the Bollywood chooses white BG Dancers.. but there are couple of songs like Dilbar and Bhool Bhulaiya where they have black BG dancers.. But I wish they chose Indian girls like the song "Mein sadke javaa.. " (Kareena Kapoor's ).. I don't know what goes behind the camera.
I'm pretty sure they demand to show more skin to get the "attention"
Sadly is not just a Bollywood problem, they do it also in South movies but most in Bollywood
As a person from Northeast, I don't like that they stereotypically portrayed us as John Cena
hahahha n1 still sorry tho lmao.
Felt that 🥺🥺🥺
It's actually better than being stereotyped
Bhai only north india is portrayed, south India is stereotyped. Rest of India doesn't exist for bollywood.
Stop asking for acceptance and validation from movies. It's trivial and doesn't matter.
I have another stereotype/trope to add, whenever a historical movie is made example Tanhaji,Ashoka,Akbar etc. one side is shown as holier than thou while other is completely villified. This takes away the moral complexity of the people of that time and characters feel caricatureish. I am not saying that we shouldn't have Heroes and Villains but at least give them some depth
Honestly indians arent mature enough...Just imagine karni sena if raja ratan singh was showed in a slightly grey light in padmavati...
Padmavat is the perfect example for this.
@Spell Check it is always acc to Indian audiences taste.
Even in Dangal , they need to make coach villian and audiences loved it.
In those cases the other side are demons..Aurangazeb was a cruel tyrant..
@@gautamg6542 So were the Marathas (read the Maratha invasion of Bengal which killed hundreds of thousands of Local Hindu Bengalis)
These people are historical feudal kings not gods, let's not look them with a black and white lens. They were just like today's leaders, both good and bad
They never make a guy fall in love with a girl in the first place who is not so called beautiful but has a beautiful set of mind and brilliant in her working field...
Because that rarely happens in real life
@@sreehari972 so what is your point ?
@@traveller2143 mostly films are made on things which are happening around them. So if society changes gradually the content coming out also changes, if not these kinds of movies will be promoted. There is no point in complaining the filmmakers as the society works this way , if u wanna a change u should not promote or watch these kinds of movies so they would understand that people won't promote these kind of scrap content
@@sreehari972
I differ from it .
See what people see they absorb unknowingly that is human nature i am against these portrayals however what people are made to see they generally tend to find it in the world and it has a huge impact on mind society changes on what people are shown and as what they are shown is the same thus change in society = nil + the world societies are devastating and degrading as a result
That also happens in other countries also. For instance Korean movies. The Guys and Girls are always perfect looking.
Same thing maybe happening in Bangladesh too, assuming you're from the country.
In the case of the whole "badass woman who drinks and smokes" situation, I feel like the problem is not the woman smoking or drinking but the portrayal of it as "empowerment" rather than just a bad habit. I read a comment somewhere which perfectly sums it up-
" I would rather have a woman being the owner and CEO of a successful business, kicking ass at work, not giving a crap about bullshit, being independent and making her own meals while she sips on some wine with her friends on a Saturday evening being portrayed as empowerment rather than the same being portrayed as just a girl going to the bar and getting drunk.
Accurate👍
Yeah, I don't have a problem with women drinking or something, but filmmakers often reduce empowerment to drinking/smoking. It CAN be empowering for women, I'm not saying it's impossible. But a woman is not empowered simply by smoking lmao. There's so many creative and more realistic portrayals, but it always boils down to drinking and smoking. Like not all empowered women want to smoke? That's not my aim in life lol.
@Spell Check oh I love this comment! You explained it far better than I could.

1. Nerdy girl completely ignored by the "hero" or just a good friend becoming a love interest after a makeover - usually where she sheds her glasses suddenly becoming attractive and therefore worthy of the hero's attention is such a ghisa pita trope.
2. Dark skinned or fat women being used as the butt of jokes.
3. Physical disabilities being the cause of pity and speech impediments being mocked.
4. The perfect wife who will use any means to save her husband (sati savitri)
5. Young men being portrayed as sex hungry ignored husbands in loveless marriages.
6. Manic pixie type heroine having some sad backstory to justify her being manic and hiding her pain.
7. Married women portrayed as nagging, unsatisfied hangers-on
8. Main female protagonist existing as a catalyst for revenge
9. Desi women portrayed as virginal, untouched and perfect and "bold" women as unsanskaari.
10. Gay men portrayed as predatory towards straight men and presented as humour devices.
I could go on and on.
Totally agree with you, while in the first point, it happens ulta also. Movies show women going for roadside junkies instead of gentlemen and mock them too as if the former wasn't enough.
You just pretty much explained humanity . Stupid
Yes!! Those manic women have a happy ending or an ending where they are forgiven because of the sob story while all they did was try to kill the female lead or woo the hero! Which is very contrary to real life and gives a wrong message as planning and executing a murder can be forgiven just because the women had a sad life.
Some of these are also very universal amongst different film industries
Portrayal of Tribals: 'Jhinga Lala Hoo' chanting black faced tribals who come around every time chaining up Hero and Heroine when they get lost in the jungle.

Oh the women with cigarette trope has annoyed me so much. It's as though they're projecting one stereotype against another. If we look at films in an intricate manner, some of these women often engage in and are subjected to misogynistic behaviour. The cigarette is somehow meant to overshadow all of the real issues and give the woman a superficial sense of liberation. While I do understand that it is used as a symbol against the regressive notion of attaching character judgment of a woman with smoking, I do feel that the trope is both misused and overused nowadays.
Ya also it is un relatable, i never see these type of women in real life.
I was also thinking this....
"A superficial sense of liberation" The term perfectly explains the potrayal. When you can't add more to her character, give her a cigarette.
@@sanjayaparhi5932 yes..so true. I have seen quite a few anime movies, where women were lead. I don't see this madness of superficial liberalism there.

Yes, they often do that to validate the main heroine. Basically, the lead actress has to be the prettiest/most appealing woman in the movie. So they make every other girl her age irritating or stereotypically ugly. For male heroes, again they need to make him the most appealing, so they give him a funny fat friend.
Smoking and drinking shouldn't be glorified in movies or web series , irrespective of the gender
It's awesome you should try
Well said 🔥🔥
Exactly
Couldn't agree more.
It's reality of our society
One of the most annoying tropes, for me has to be, hands down, "fat girls equivalent to unattractive and can only gain confidence after shedding a few inches" one. Like it's so bizzare. It affects me so much considering I am quite healthy. Mocking girls who have normal bodies has just become another stereotype. Also not every man in this world has defined abs. Like can we get realistic representation of male bodies as well.
Also shot guys being comedians
That's something you'd find in Hollywood movies as well
That's everywhere not only India and on a true note it depends on choice of person. Some may like it n some may not.

May be this is not very obvious to people, but I'm actually tired of upper middle class or rich people being potrayed as always missing something in their life, sad, unsatisfied, overly westernizede, even evil at times. While the poor community is always big and kind hearted, happy and content, overly sanskari etc.
I understand that this portrayal appeals to the masses, but this is not always true.

Out of context since the movie is not Bollywood. But if you want to see a movie that portrays class difference in a more complex manner, see Korean movie Parasite

Another trope: movies starting when guy feels attracted to the girl because she is so beautiful. She is approached because she is beautiful. Then loved because she is a good human being. And the girl likes the guy because of his personality. Guy feels attracted because of looks.
Exactly.. this creates unrealistic standards in real society. For marriage guy wants a perfect beautiful girl which is not realistic.
@@ayusheee8835 and if someone looks pretty after putting makeup on it is a crime. Natural beauty and all.. no merit to the skill of doing makeup and understanding of what can look better on someone
Well but in reality that's how it works too, right? Love usually starts off with basic attraction. You find someone cute and you approach them. Then once you get to know them better, you begin to fall in love with them. That's how real life works too, right? I dont see anything seemingly wrong with that...
@@Lazymath007_ yes true.. but look at the movies.. in 99% of cases guy likes a girl because she is pretty and then approaches her. In return girl loves the guy for his personality. Constantly seens pattern.
And if a girl likes guy because he is rich she is either stupid and shallow or a vamp.
It is normal for a guy to like a girl because she is beautiful and bad of a girl to like a guy for money. This is the movie logic.
How many movies exist where looks are not the reason for a guy to make his first move.

It's been said but I guess not so much but the portrayals of South Indian people in Bollywood so disheartening to say the least. Movies like Chennai Express, SRK's portrayal as Shekhar in RaOne and even in Classics like Chak De India, South Indians are either weird or butt of every other joke. I'm a South Indian and being part of this community I assure you literally no one says "Ayyo" at the beginning of every other sentence. Please can we just let that stereotype die. South Indian is just a term and we have different traditions no matter how similar they seem.
That scene from ra. One is so cringy when srk puts curd on needles, and kareen kapoor constantly saying condom condom instead of 'konchum konchum'is so annoying. 😫

Sherni was very accurate in it's potrayal of a genuine female hero, one who's badass not by drinking or smoking, but through her actions and bravery. All kudos to Vidya Balan and I hope she continues to do more and these kind of female heroes should be normalised
It was good and accurate. I am just worried about the character names of the actors being changed. Why always a Hindu guy is being portrayed as a villain, when in reality it was other way round. I was watching a documentary on India's obsession with fair skin and in one segment, the Russian and British models who were in a saree shoot said that many Indian girls are much more talented and prettier than us(them) but the director prefers white females.
That's why I've stopped watching commercial over the top movies. Tbh I liked them growing up, it's a good 2 hour dumbed down entertainment, but noticed too many stereotypes and same unrealistic elements repeating in them. Couldn't they have found a good dancer from literally half a billion indian women? Still they bring in a Moroccan or british dancer. Literally every attractive 'hero' is either from Punjab/Delhi. The exact same issue is present in the commercial south indian movies too..
See tbh it is not really all white skin obsession, it is more importantly economics.
1. These women are generally from eastern European countries like Bulgaria or Ukraine, believe it or not they are less costly compared to many Indian dancers, (generally speaking). Those countries situation is literally hell compared to India, therefore they are migrating to many Asian countries not just India. White skin is only true to a extent.
2. Local Indian dancers have unions (trust me unions are really fucking strong in every country) and enjoy benefits like a. higher pay b. regulated work hours etc.
3. These foreign dancers are basically at the helm of their contracts with the agents who generally exploit them because of the way these contracts are made which gives these agents a lot of power over these dancers choices in this country like 1. work hours and conditions 2. pay 3. choices 4. also off time personal life they are also looked over by the agents because they want to make sure that they do not have connections as then they will get more leverage.

What is wrong with badass women
@@RB_INSIGHT maybe he meant cigarette smoking badass women

To add more-
1) The behenji trope- honestly I am fed up of this trope. This trope has been portrayed in several of our teenage television shows like Kya mast Hai life, Shararat, Saanya, Channel V’s Best Friends Forever etc. even movies like Queen and Aisha had this problem. It’s getting irritating to see the same old Behenji’s who is a small town girl, wears salwar kameez, does not speak in English, is always ‘filmy’, lack intelligence and is always after the main female protagonist’s love interest for comic relief purposes. It perpetuates a very problematic stereotype that people who come from small towns are not at all intelligent and likeable.
2) The bimbo trope- honestly this whole bimbo Trope which literally comes from Poo from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, movies like Pyaar ka Punchnama series etc that women who love pink, makeup shopping, bubbly natured, shallow and superficial girlfriend has become very demeaning to a lot of women out there. Women are very multifaceted and complicated beings one cannot reduce women or any other human being for that matter as one particular type.
3) Tropes about LGBTQIA+ - Thankfully their shoes like Made in Heaven, Thinkistan, Fire, Jim Sarbh from Padmavat etc give good representation of homosexual people and not showing them as always talking about sex and being used for comic relief purposes. But my main problem is when they try to show the trans community. Like in the recent series Pati Patni aur Panga and even a film like Laxmi perpetuated stereotypes about the transgender community at large.
4) Rich is evil trope- honestly, this comes from an internalised socialistic mindset that we Indians have but it’s getting really tiring to see rich landlords, politicians, businessmen etc as evil, barbaric and cruel people Who have some sort of sadistic pleasure in torturing the common man.
5) The Fat people trope- I hate when people with a certain body type are used as either comic relief, people who constantly eat or someone who is looking for validation from her crush. This kind of a trope has just become over use now. I can understand the problems related to obesity and that obesity is not a healthy sign neither is anorexia but to make fun of someone’s condition or body type is just borderline cruel.
You forgot about the "South" stereotype. In movies like chennai express and ra one portrayal of a tamilian was cringe worthy and offensive. Everytime a "South" character is portrayed in mainstream hindi cinema it is always done under the visual grammar of mockery

I, fully, agree with "women empowerment with cigarettes and alcohol" and "hindu god-man villains".
In my college, I met the true version of "empowered women". She was confident, intelligent, friendly as well as pretty. Still, she didn't smoke and drink. She had a lot of admirers but whenever someone confesses to her she refused, even to her best friend, because she never saw him in that way. Some of the guys thought that she is rude and selfish when she didn't accepted their friendship but as I observed her, she was just doing what she thought was right; taking her own decisions.
I, still, respect her because she seems really empowered and very clear in her head about the things she does.

As a British born and raised woman I find the Indian portrayals of us lot pretty laughable. I’m fluent in Hindi and Punjabi as well as english of course. The justification that an actress can’t speak Hindi because she’s British is ridiculous. Many British people of Indian origin speak Indian languages. Also, the portrayal of British born women as foreign-looking is absurd. We’re literally of Indian origin so we don’t look white just because we’ve been born and raised abroad. Lastly, the accents of the so-called “British” women isn’t representative at all. We don’t sound like Kajol or SRK from DDLJ (they literally had Indian accents), nor do we sound like the girls in Housefull 3 who all had American accents. Even Katrina Kaif who is British doesn’t have a British accent because she barely lived here. Oh and we don’t live in mansions with helipads 🙄

Finally, someone spoke about the potrayal of the ~BADASS~ women. It's noticeable but it is ignored. My friends are so influenced by that image of being a badass girl who can drink and smoke addictively and there are guys who consider it cool. Wearing short or provocative clothes, chain smoking and going to bars alone all the time is not the one. One could be doing it, whether girl or a guy, it's their choice. One movie where Goans were portrayed perfectly was Baaton Baaton Mein
Exactly
I loved that movie...awwww still do
I’m Goan, while I definitely agree that goa is a much more liberal state in terms women empowerment and safety, which what I love my state, it’s annoying how much Bollywood has taken that good thing about and used it to our disadvantage.
I hate the notion created that goans, Goan women specifically don’t have any morality, it’s actually opposite. If anything our history with colonization and culture have raised us to persistent about certain values that upkeep.
Since when does being “modern” and wearing skirts AMD shorts mean you don’t have any values or morals to stand on.
Also goans not a monolith, not all goans are Catholic, I’m not against Christian goans being portrayed but the way it is, it’ ironic because goa is actually very diverse religiously and Christian technically make up 20%.
The stereotype made especially about Goan women is extremely rude as well. To associate women by portraying her as easy and extending that stereotype that we’re all apparently alcoholic ‘sluts’ simple because there’s more freedom for us to exercise our autonomy compared to other states is stupid and generalized the wide range of women, some of whom genuinely like being “traditional”.
It’s actually dangerous, because there have been multiple rising cases of Indian tourists harassing Goan women because they think they’re easy.
It’s ironic, that Bollywood loves to portray goa as this holiday destination where anyone can do anything and that goans just do whatever they want, they they have never even scratch the surface of actual Goan culture.
I think this may also extend to the portrayal of Punjabi’s as well, but this seems like the projection of someone’s narrow mind perspective in an attempt to make us look bad.
Also on another note, why the hell are expected to speak Hindi, same goes for every other non Hindi speaking state, not like y’all speak Konkani.
It’s also low key sexist, apprently if you wear a mini skirt or drink and enjoy life , you don’t have any value
I am Goan too and I 100% agree. Have you noticed honeymoon couples in Goa anytime ? The bride is always wearing clothes she is not comfortable in, just because she thinks its Goa. I have nothing against clothing, people can wear whatever they want, but why choose to be uncomfortable just because of a geographical location ?

I really have to commend you for bringing this up as this was something going on in my mind for a very long time. Often we see a "badass" and independent women being represented as a cigarette smoking, drinking or a hypersexualized lady who has the ownership of her body. Another one bizzare stereotype getting trend is that the characters frequently uttering some slang words makes them either badass , cool or for portraying their frustration on the system.. which as an audience I never found cool at all. For portrayal of a strong character it's not necessary show them drinking and smoking, throwing anger on everybody or uttering frequent "gaali" in every situation. It's a mindset need to be changed.
The definition of female emancipation being limited to very specific choices is a hugeeeee problem! And its not even helping make a step in the right direction. It is a farrr more layered issue with multiple aspects which are often left ignored owing to lack of ‘glamour’
*Bengalis has been stereotyped for long time in Hindi shows and in movies.*
