I have been involved and dance education for 50 years. I really admire Merce Cunningham but I don’t really enjoy his work. And comparing him to George Balanchine it’s kind of silly.
Cunningham is great. But, come on... THE greatest of the 20th Cent.? Unnnh... Martha Graham was in the 20th Cent. Balanchine was in the 20th cent. Even Nijinsky was in the 20th century. Jerome Robbins was in the 20th cent. Bob Fosse was in the 20th cent. Of COURSE Cunningham is ONE of the greatest, and belongs in this company... but....
does any of the names have his dance technic? I heard of none except Graham - and that was too classically chained space concept for my taste, with some big contraction LIKES. Now looking at Cuningham again- dry as it is- also looks very classical- if I compare it with Akhram Khan's last performance. Some of the drills look so boring...for today's standards .. I just admire my teachers and their will to break our bodies into "Cunningham Common" . Did hurt a lot 30 years ago- right? Im just blessed not to start from classical ballet. Just a ballet dancer could write so much rubbish about Cunningham under this video.
He could be a lot and have given many names but for me it is not art. It is his craziness people buy. It is not dance. I would not pay USD 10 to watch any of his works.
Who are you to define what is art and what is not? You can't just pick and choose. also there's a lot technique and physical and mental complexity in his works, it's not just "craziness"
I am only watching this because, I have an assignment from my Art Appreciation class. Whereas what I see in this meaningless performing is a waste of time.
Tanto trabajo, tanta belleza y sabiduría. Una maravilla artistica para el mundo. Gracias.
Molto interessante, coinvolgente, viste dal vivo alcune di queste sperimentazioni portano all'oblio
one of the experimental pioneeers in daaaance.
I’m reading now the marvelous catalog-book of this important exhibition
Un genio, senza alcun dubbio!
Which videos are shown in this video? Especially interested in the one with douglas dunn, also the one at the end
What's the music that used in last minutes of video, i want that !
Wonderful! Long live the Cunningham Technique! 👏🏻
If he had an opinion on capoeira I'd love to know it

Can't be the Parthenon if that is the ocean behind her. The ocean is far away from the Parthenon. Might be Sounion.
No citations. Tired of unexplanatory clips. Devalues the presentation.
