    I never thought of grafting to add a new growth tip. Very well done video Stephen!

    If I were to graft a Hass avocado cutting (the scion) to a branch of a 10 years old Mexicola avocado tree (the root stock), will the tree then produce two different types of avocado fruits?

    Great way to explain it! I would recommend going in and cutting back your tree either this summer or this winter. The branches seem very long and thin and a lot are just going straight up. You generally would also want to graft closer to the trunk of the tree because that tip will not be a significant amount of the tree and it is very possible it will just break off.

      This year I chose to leave the tree so it would produce a strong root system. You are right it is top heavy and I will be pruning it back to a nicer structure ;). The grafts I showed were on the tips of branches mostly to limit the risk of failed grafts. Next year on my friends tree we will be doing grafts much further back to put permanent additions on it :)
      I am really glad you liked the video! I had a lot of fun putting it together!

    Good job explaining how to Graft Plants. I like the idea of getting your perennials to speed up the process of fruiting.

      The sooner they feed you and your family to quicker it pays for itself :) I am patient but prefer to be rewarded quicker lol

    Thank you for explaining! This might sound crazy but I didn't have any Idea what grafting a plant was, until I played the game sims 4. I had to research this and it lead me to your video. LOL. Thank you for explaining what grafting means and how to do it.

      Brittany Davis I am glad I could help. Lots of our most common fruit crops are due to grafts. I am glad the Sims could help!

    Nice vid as usual. Last year I chopped down a crab apple tree because I HATED the taste. They tasted gross. It is still alive and send up shoots. Thisvideo gives me the idea to graft some better tasting frust to the stump. Is this viable? Where do I get cuttings to graft? Should I take some pruning shears to the nursery and "help" them out with some pruning????? LOLz.

    • @AlbertaUrbanGarden
      @AlbertaUrbanGarden  10 років тому

      You absolute can so a stump graft. You can put 2-3 types on one stump or take those new shoots and graft them :)
      Right before spring sets in you can take scions usually from nurseries that have botanical gardens :) I plan to do that next year ! They allowed me to no problem !
      I would love to see how you do! If you would like some help planning let me know

    Hi Steven,
    I don't know you could add a new tip to the tree. Course now that i say it it makes sense.
    I have a few small trees (peach, cherry, apple and a grape vine thats over 50y old and looks more like a tree than a vine) in the garden. I plan on making a 5 or more part grafted fruit tree someday soon.
    Do you recommend a time of lear that is best for grafting?
    Scarlett

    • @AlbertaUrbanGarden
      @AlbertaUrbanGarden  10 років тому +1

      Spring my friend. you want to collect your scions before anything happens in the spring and store them in the fridge. Then when the buds are starting on the root stock you can do the grafting. Grafting after the leafs are the size of mouse ears has a higher failure rate
      my apple tree at home I plan on grafting 2 pear and 2 apples to it to make it a 5 in 1 :) just time now!

      Interesting thing of note with plants of the same family is you can graft to each other. So what I plan to do is graft 2 apples and 2 pears to my apple tree in the next few years :) I am glad you liked the video!

    Great video ***** I recently purchased an espalier pear tree that has been grafted with three different kinds of pears, I'm very excited for it to fruit (hopefully next year) to taste each kind.

    • @AlbertaUrbanGarden
      @AlbertaUrbanGarden  10 років тому +1

      That is fantastic my friend! I was thinking about an Espalier one as well but decided against it lol. You can add a few more types to your tree as well. Interesting note you can add apples to your pear :) a Bud graft might work the best ! Gardening in Norway showed it in one of his videos!

    Great vid, Stephen!
    Grafting is a very fun hobby as well, and a very good tool to have. In areas with heavy snowfalls and frost, it`s very beneficial for us gardeners to master this technique to save our fruit trees from damages and even death. I have also many rootstocks available if the mice chew off the bark below the snow level. Sometimes they can eat off all the bark and leave the inner wood exposed to the elements. If not rootstocks are grafted into the upper part, the tree dies off. Just cut off the top part of the rootstocks, plant them beside the damaged tree in a circle, and then sneak the tops in under the bark of the big tree. Then cover the damage and graft with a grafting wax or similar.
    I`ll may make some drawings of the different grafting techniques in a future grafting video. -Or it would be very cool to cooperate with you making a real cool educational grafting video. :)
    All the best my friend.
    Halvor.

      Splendid!
      I`ll email you when I`ve sorted out some ideas. This evening it was some other things that occupied my thoughts. My cat Isac got bitten by a viper and I had to take him to the vet. His one leg swelled to over double thickness, and he was in a pain. He`s now sleeping beside me here after getting some injections that seemed to calm down things.
      Best wishes,
      Halvor.
