I asked Ella why this set took so long to record "Don" she said "if you an I go into the studio and record 58 Gershwin songs back t back - it will all sound the same" Ella went on, "I give Nelslon 6 songs are a time ( two nights session 3 each evening ) and that's how we did it.. Yes Ella, it turned out bettter than rather well - its the definative reading of the Gershwins!!!" "Oh! Don" (shyly)
Ella has been my favorite voice in song for forever. She let me carry her yellow basket when shopping once. I was the gaga geek fan and sang 'a tisket a tasket may I carry your yellow basket' and she looked at me for a long moment before handing the basket to me and I walked with her while she shopped ( a gourmet cook Miss Ella was). I was extremely respectful of our diva and I handed her basket back when she was finished. "That's it!" said the Forest Gump of chance encounters. Ella: the best forever. She has always been wonderful since the beginning of her great and incredible 59-year career! I am Brazilian and I live in Brazil. I love this singer and I know that she is the best in the world of all time.

I grew up with this and a dozen other classic albums (Billie on Decca, Sarah on Mercury, Anita on Verve, Ray Charles box set, Errol Garner Concert by the Sea, The Elf, etc) - and I know every single note, every transition, every key. Can you BELIEVE the incredible work of Nelson Riddle, scoring what - 52 songs?? Holy cow. That's a lot of work! But they knocked it out of the ballpark.
What's amazing is Gershwin wrote every original melody, and the harmonies. Magical as his legacy was, he died early. God bless him for the beautiful melodies Gershwin left behind, and the witty lyrics Ira wrote.
Billy or Ella such a hard choice between the two. Both absolutely amazing with sound for the ears pleasing. Both individually unique. They are the same but two completely different types of singers. I love this music, even though a lot of the lyrics are borderline misogynist who the F cares. I’m so tired of speech repression in this country and all these websites and all over the entire world. What happened to I will fight for your right to say it. Anybody remember Skokie Illinois, what the F is wrong with everybody, those who do not study and learn from history are doomed, Doomed, DOOMED to repeat it over and over again. THERE ARE just way too many people obsessed with having no pain in their life, it’s freaking ridiculous. If you’re full of hate look for love and you will find away! All that being said I love this music, ELLA’s range and phrasing and everything else is simply phenomenal!
Nancy Sinatra said a moment ago on her weekly 3-hour show on Siriusly Sinatra satellite radio that, “I always thought it was The Anniversary WALTZ, but no -- it's The Anniversary SONG . . . “ Me too. And I never realized until this moment that Al Jolson had such a great singing voice - a rich textured bass-baritone to go along with his strength in the tenor range. In our home, our finest music box (the loudest, and with the most complex harmonies) plays this ANNIVERSARY WALTZ (er . . . song). And again, I didn't know till I Googled a moment ago and learned that Al Jolson wrote the words! To a poignant melody by Saul Chaplin. The two new friends were working on a movie together when they came up with this one. A Wiki note (below) about the distinguished career of the melodist, Mr. Chaplin. Is this one at UA-cam? Yes. A superb recording, you may agree. And a vocal timbre that is almost unrivalled. Thanks, Chuck and Nancy for another terrific show. ----- Saul Chaplin (February 19, 1912 - November 15, 1997) was an American composer and musical director. He was born Saul Kaplan in Brooklyn, New York. He had worked on stage, screen and television since the days of Tin Pan Alley. In film, he won three Oscars for collaborating on the scores and orchestrations of An American in Paris (1951), Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) and West Side Story (1961). While continuing as a film music supervisor, Chaplin became an associate producer in the early '60s and worked on such major features as Can-Can (1960), West Side Story (1961), I Could Go On Singing (1963), The Sound of Music (1965), STAR! (1968), Man of La Mancha (1972) and That's Entertainment, Part 2 (1976). He published his autobiography, The Golden Age of Movie Musicals and Me, in 1994. He had worked with and was friends with most of the major songwriters and performers of his era, such as Cole Porter, Ira Gershwin, Al Jolson, Leonard Bernstein, Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, Phil Silvers, Julie Andrews, Frank Sinatra and others. His memoir focused on the behind the scenes aspect of moviemaking. In the note about his marriages (two) I just recalled something my favorite NYC member of our family - “Stanley” - shared about Broadway producer, Harold Prince. “Chaplin married Ethel Schwartz, had one child, a daughter Judith (who married Harold Prince); the couple divorced in 1950. In 1968, Chaplin married Betty Levin, who worked as script supervisor on The Sound of Music . . . “ Thanks for sharing, Timeless Music Box. Mark, Thank you for sharing so much history with us. It seems to me that a "miracle" happened in the Jewish section of New York City in the early 1920's. All of the most beautiful music was written by Jewish composers and lyricists. My Jewish step grandfather who loved Jazz took me to see all of the movies featuring the songs of Rodgers and Hart, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Lowe. I was only 6 years old when we started our "dinner and a movie" and didn't realize what I was seeing. He passed away in 1974, and I think about him every day when I listen to this music. I remember him telling my Italian grandmother "Nobody puts a song over like Al Jolson". I've read that Al Jolson would never perform onstage if black entertainers weren't allowed at the venues. And Jolson wore himself out entertaining our troops. I advise everyone who loves this music to join a group which performs at nursing homes or assisted living. If you can sing and/or play these songs on the piano, so much the better. I have never met anyone who couldn't sing if they can find their correct key. I am a soloist at my group and when I did a salute to Kate Smith singing Irving Berlin's "God Bless America", I had to hold back the tears because some of the "Greatest Generation" struggled to get on their feet in respect for the song. I had to hold back my tears to get through the song. Afterwards, some of the people came to thank me because their brothers, or uncles had died at the Battle of the Bulge, at D Day or at Iwo Jima.
Omg thank you for sharing this beautiful beautiful beautiful album of Ella with me and with the world!!! It made me so happy and so blessed. Thank you!!!!!!
If we womens and girls in our little family were as persons as Ella we probably would live forever of the energy inside and outside of us. Nothing else would be possible or do. We would rise and be l ike lights. We would be so happy. But we better stay then in Ellas time cause it´s the best at least to this date counts. Time will show you never know it might grow.

What a beautiful treatment of George and Ira Gershwin's memorable music! No one could have done all these songs better than Ella! She had the range, the perfect pitch, the control and the sound to do it all! Ella truly was the First Lady of Song, there was just no one like her! So talented, she could do it all, swing, sad, showy, and she always sang the intros to the songs which were so important to set the scene for the lyrics to follow. We lost a real gem when she left us, no one will ever quite compare to her talent! Opera had Maria Callas, Pop had Ella Fitzgerald, best bar none! @@mjleger4555 Please send your remarks to the person who wrote "Thanks but the times are off." It was not me.
"I've got the 'you don't know the half of it' blues" really speaks to me 😔
Omg, thanks for posting this here!
pure joy
Her voice is like velvet....
Ella.....gorgeous voice. Amazing.
Wonderful ....thank you!!
Ella al massimo della sua produzione discografica!!!Magnifico album PERFETTO Bisognerebbe farlo ascoltare a scuola ai ragazzi di oggi
Wonderful
GENIAL GRACIAS
Her voice is heaven on earth

Infusione di dolcezza e malinconia
Nancy Sinatra said a moment ago on her weekly 3-hour show on Siriusly Sinatra satellite radio that, “I always thought it was The Anniversary WALTZ, but no -- it's The Anniversary SONG . . . “
Me too.

Saul Chaplin (February 19, 1912 - November 15, 1997) was an American composer and musical director.
In 1968, Chaplin married Betty Levin, who worked as script supervisor on The Sound of Music . . . “
Thanks for sharing, Timeless Music Box. Celebrated this day at Sinatra Family - Forum - "Siriusly Sinatra" NANCY FOR FRANK sinatrafamily.com/forum/showthread.php/51063-NFF-Week-of-November-22-2020-nbsp?p=1298736#post1298736
Aguardo...
That was beautiful 💛

I would've loved this if only a large number of the songs weren't cut off near the end of the song.
