Hey yall! Above is posted something that i dont even know is true lol (my comment) so it may or may not happen, and in doing so is not a spoiler. However if yo ass keeps scrollin, then you may find an actual spoiler. You have been warned.
OMG frieren fits that trope exactly. The OP boss that took 3 days of constant dying to defeat, and after defeated become your companion, but discovered to be Completely Inept and stuck everywhere like a dum dum.
Its crazy how hard this scene hits. Throughout the show, you see very little actual combat from Frieren. her style is simple, straightforward, and direct, with no flashy casts and no real "overwhelming force moments" common to the genre (breaking the dome and revealing her true mana levels are the only exceptions) and it's this strategy of implying, but hardly ever demonstrating her real power, that ironically elevates this scene to the heights of hype.
The very fact that we've never even seen the scratched surface of her true power makes this scene that much more terrifying. To get past that clone, they need to kill it, and to kill it, they have to overcome everything that it's truly capable of. Absolutely spine chilling.
I think the reason why this hits so hard is mostly that it kind of plays into horror elements and fear of the unknown. We have pretty much no idea of what Frieren is really capable of besides "she'd probably win that fight" and that ambiguity creates fear when being faced as an opponent. She's implied and shown as strong but your imagination does the rest of the legwork. If we knew exactly what was up, it would be like seeing a hard boss but you already know it's attack patterns.
I noticed I don't feel tired or overstimulated when watching Frieren. It shows that you can make a great anime minus all the shouting and background noise.
