SPLITTING BEEHIVES in order to introduce QUEEN cells & Increase Colony Count for POLLINATION

  • A few days ago these hives on pallets were set up for splits. Since I had to wait a few days to get queen cells I waited to actually complete the splits. This video shows a little bit more about the location where these bees are and it also shows the method I used to complete these splits. I realize there are many ways to perform splits. This is just how I chose to do it. Hopefully it will work out well.

    In this video I tried out the pullover ventilated pullover beekeeping jacket from Guardian Bee Apparel. I must say I was impressed! In some ways I liked it better than the zip up jacket. It is an affordable option and a good way to get great protection while working bees. Check out Guardian Bee Apparel here: guardianbeeapparel.com/
    Thanks for watching!

    How do you split your bees? Any ideas on how to be quick and efficient in situations like this. It takes me forever! I understand there are many ways to split beehives and any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

      Bruce, you sure are busy as a bee! When do you have time to do PT work?

      I work 4 ten hour days (Monday - Friday) and pretty much do bee stuff when not at the hospital. Today we were slow at work due to this crazy virus so I left early and worked with bees until dark. It is really too much but I am addicted bees! Need to figure out how to either be more efficient or back off a little. I try not to do much bee stuff on Sunday but otherwise it’s game on. I am often doing bee stuff until dark a lot of days and I am never able to get it done as quickly as I think I can. Fortunately I have an awesome wife who puts up with me. 🙂

      This is the best method to make splits in my opinion. I leave the queen in the original spot though

      It felt like a lot but not sure how the pros can go through and work hundreds of hives.

    That's some beautiful property. Those hives should bloom on all those watermelons.

    My plan for this spring is to move 2 of my 3 to a double NUC and let the colony raise a new. My main hive I’ll probably try and pull 2 dirty splits off of it. I’m not 100% sure of that though, still up in the air on my main hive.

    Hey Bruce, You may have told us already but who do you buy your queen cups from and do you know if they ship them? Thanks and keep up the great videos.

      I got the cells from Sleeping Bear Apiaries (Farms) in Chipley, Florida. I do not believe they ship but you can contact them. Just google them and they will come up.

    How long tell those plants actually produce flowers and pollen?

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  4 роки тому

      I am not sure. Won’t be long. There are lots of other plants and woods around as well as a nice water source so I think the bees will be ok. We are coming into our main honey flow here in this area so the next couple of months should be good months for bees. Thanks for checking in. Good question.

    If those are the ones you shipped off to almonds they really came home weak

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  4 роки тому

      Yes a few were weak but most were quite strong. The previous week I added a second deep in preparation for these splits so they had a lot more space. In the previous couple of videos you can see how strong they were when I first brought them out to the watermelon fields.

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  4 роки тому

      Two were a total loss. Probably 18 or 20 were strong or very strong and the rest were mediocre. Mixed reviews for sure.
