Just for a little more info on the difference between director's cut and the original. There are about 30 additional minutes, but it's definitely the definitive version. There are some alternate and extended scenes, some of the editing has been changed (but it's just as great as in the original version), there's added depth to the characters, there are more hints and explanations for the way the cult works, there are even a couple new rituals. It's not just some extended cut slapped together. And while the film was already 2.5 hours long, the added 30 minutes doesn't screw up the pacing at all, it actually makes for a richer and more overwhelming experience, even adding a bit more of a punch and understanding to the ending. It's my favorite version, and I was obsessed with the original cut.
the hereditary screenplay is so worth the $60. it includes cinematic shots, details from the film, and much more. i currently have it and i love reading their dialogues. i’m a huge screenwriter/screenplay fan and i was so pleased
I made the mistake of trying to show this movie to someone who isn't really a horror fan in the slightest. They hated it. I probably should have started with showing them Midsommar first, though. I started with Hereditary which was decidedly a much darker film whereas Midsommar utilized nature, bright greens and sunlight to frame the horrifying events that take place instead.
@@dominicromano5876 I disagree on every single one of those points. I think Hereditary is not only darker in aesthetic and tone, it's also scarier. Midsommar just feels like a summer festival in a beautiful foreign country, so foreign they have a few unfamiliar practices that our main characters struggle with (some more than others) but they all FEEL like they're safe and just observing until they realize they're all completely fucked. Simon and Connie and Mark we don't even see what happens to them, probably because then we the audience would know for a fact we're dealing with a death cult. I think if you can get past the beginning of Midsommar, it's overall the more approachable of the two films. That being said I did see Hereditary first.
@@voteZDLR Agreed. Midsommar has its disturbing parts, (especially the murder-suicide of the sister and her parents) but to me, the cliff scene, for example, was more graphic than actually scary. I think, despite its shock value it was predictable. The way they were standing at the top, the way everyone was positioned watching, you see it coming, and hence don't feel out of control. Also, as you said the lighting is extremely effective and it does reduce the tension for the audience a lot. Despite the death of other characters, Dani is still our protagonist. She seems safe throughout the majority of the film, especially when it's clear they’ve accepted her, which is why it's easier to watch. Hereditary on the other hand - wildly unpredictable. It was one of the only movies I'd seen that actually disturbed me. Definitely way scarier and a huge mindfuck.
@@ep373 What is interesting to me is comparing these two films, in both you can basically say that "evil wins" at the end. But I do not get the impression that the Hargas (the cult we are dealing with in Midsommar) are doing what they do for the sake of being evil. They in fact believe that what they are doing is necessary to ensure their way of life continues, not just to survive but also to thrive. All of the sacrifices are sacrifices made to nature, basically. From a foreigner's standpoint, we might call what they're doing "evil" but I don't think they were doing it for evil's sake. This is in direct contrast to the cult in Hereditary. And this is why I think Hereditary is the scarier film at the end of the day. I think the cult in Hereditary is de facto evil. By the end of the film when their grand, overarching plan is finally realized she even explains to Peter who is now the demonic King Paimon that they rejected the trinity and instead worship devoutly to one of the most powerful Kings of Hell. I love that they went with Paimon as well for this, if they ended up making it just a generic Satanic cult movie it wouldn't have been as interesting I don't think but essentially that is what it is. They aren't worshiping Satan but they're worshiping one of Satan's most powerful followers, for selfish reasons (wealth and access to the secrets of the universe is what they said their motivations were).
I got the vvitch screenplay book. If you love art, longer forewords and just well printings of full script with some extra stuff to read about you will adore it. Im gonna get the hereditary when for sure when i get some more money.
I own the Ex Machina book and it’s worth every dollar. That’s one of my favorite movies and it has the script and artwork of Ava designs and the cinematography breakdown. It’s an investment tho.

I bought it and I’ve bought 3 separate Blu-ray players and they all say it’s not compatible... in order to watch it I probably have to buy a $200 Blu-ray player.. and I can’t afford it. So I’m gonna have to buy it on Apple TV and watch it there, but that also only works on my phone so I’m pretty disappointed.

The screenplay books are $60 a piece? If you just wanna read them, download them. BUT if you just want some nice movie themed collectibles... I'd buy them. They look to be of high quality, A24 is the kind of studio that's more art house than it is given to corporate greed and all that. So you're supporting an artist's studio over Hollywood crap. And yeah they'd make some great coffee table books. But me personally I am just excited they have them published at all, that means I can likely find them on torrent and in pretty high quality too. Just get a nice PDF viewer and throw it on an iPad and bam, A24 screenplays acquired.

Not sure what model it is but I have an LG player that works perfectly. For me it’s about what brand works best, so I’d look up what brands are good. My tv is LG also and works just fine so they’re definitely a good brand.

I loved the movie. It wasn't really scary but just had a uneasy feeling and it was a real messed up 3rd act. The cinematography was beautiful and the story was well written and directed. I'd buy that boxset.
I just spent a lot of coin in the last two weeks on pre ordering the scream factory friday the 13th boxset and the Omen boxset and a few scream factory steelbook and i just remembered I just pre ordered the real cool back to the future steelbook boxset in 4k. So I'm gonna have to pass on this one. Need to stop spending so much but I hadn't bought a single movie or anything in that realm since february when the shit started to hit the fan with the covid 19 shit but 5 months later I guess I made up for lost time 😆 I was saving my money like always but even more since everything is closed now and I didn't trust amazon so it's just a weird time right now. Im lucky that i have two essential jobs and im getting more hours than I've ever worked in my life Every week. Pretty much working almost 80 hours a week between shipping packages at UPS and cleaning hospitals everyday. Im thankful I have those jobs and for now my family and I are doing great but I have this weird feeling about this coming winter. I feel it's gonna be messed up because people are gonna get sick with flu and colds and think they have covid 19 and the hospitals are gonna be fucked because i talk to doctors everyday and they tell me that most of the people getting this Virus right now are young people around 20 people everyday. And they are suffering from anxiety more than the symptoms of covid 19. The doctor told me he's happy that right now only young people are coming in because if it was people over 60 it would be horrible so right now it's something the hospitals can deal with, but he told me if it does change to that this winter it's gonna be real bad. Like end of days bad because the hospitals are right now holding their heads above the water and anything more happens they will be drowning very fast. I hate to be a bummer but just something on my mind and right now im going to the hospital to clean the urgent care building where they do all the testing for covid so it's kind of scary since im around the shit everyday but I'm used to it and I wear gloves, mask and goggles every day and change them out and wash my hands so much my hands are raw but still can't be too safe.

Having seen both the Director's Cut and the theatrical cut, the DC is much better. Some scenes go longer, some scenes they added a bit more dialogue here and there (to such an extent if you hadn't seen the theatrical version like 10 times before like me, you probably won't even notice a lot of the new dialogue) and best of all they actually add a new ritual (or two). The other thing they do in the DC is they dive more into the conflicts between both Christian and Josh (their thesis war with Josh's emphasis on actual academic efforts to Christian's opportunistic laziness) as well as the conflict between Christian and Dany. Honestly if you thought Christian was a jerk in the first one, he's an insufferable asshole in the DC. One scene he and Dany are having a particularly heated argument and he literally is like "Listen, you knew exactly what you were doing when you gave me that bouquet of flowers!" (to be clear she does this in both versions, he just doesn't yell at her for it except for in the DC). "That's just what you do, you like giving me things knowing I have nothing to give you back because you like to keep me feeling guilty!" and she understandably is like "No, I just wanted to give you some flowers... by the way these people are out here doing PAGAN rituals, we need to get the fuck out of here" and he's so naive about it like "Well, you can go Dani but I am here for work. I am doing my thesis here." and Dani is like "Don't be stupid, these people DEPEND on people never finding out about this and you think they actually want you here to expose them?" The most important thing that that scene changes besides making Christian look like a whiny little girl, is that it makes Dani actually look STRONGER than Christian in that moment. And Josh, and everyone else. She knew exactly what they were witnessing and she also correctly guessed their malicious intentions before anyone else did when in the original if she did guess that, she never reveals that she knows they're PAGAN RITUALS at least verbally. So overall, DC is worth seeing but it DOES change the movie. I think for the most part they're good changes. But it does change the dynamics of a lot of the characters in the films, notably the ones I mentioned above.

So overall, DC is worth seeing but it DOES change the movie. I think for the most part they're good changes. But it does change the dynamics of a lot of the characters in the films, notably the ones I mentioned above.
