It's just a low pass filter, but removing it will have no effect, so it's negligible.

😂😂 you are wrong, with this trick you need light to turn it on, not dark, its not possible to turn it on in darkness, 😂😂
Use a pot instead of a flat value resistor. It should change the light intensity to turn on the circuit. Same as a rheostat.

Hola! Please, forgive my english... I am Edgardo from Buenos Aires, Argentina and want to thank you for posting such a very simple circuit... and I make it. But, please don´t laugh...! It works perfectly but... UP SIDE DOWN... Let me tell you: when I plug in, in a dark place, the light goes on, but when I light the LDR with a flashlight, goes on... exactly the contrary that you show in your video... Please ¿what did I do wrong!!!? the only diference with your video is that I use a 7 watt led bulb. I beg your assistance!!!! Your instructions are follow eaxtly as you show in your video. Any one make this circuit working? Mine, I used 3w and 9w but same result light not off.
CHeck your LDR, if in light the resistance is more than 4K, it will not go off. Try with diac ( connect a diac in series with LDR and from the central point , resistance of 100K and phase wire.
Use a small sollar panel instead of LDR , for better results
