Private Investigator Thomas Magnum likes the good life. How could he not when serving as the permanent 'house guest' of celebrated author Robin Masters at his luxury Hawaiian getaway. Magnum helps the unseen millionaire with security and in return he gets to live in paradise, drive his employer's Ferrari 308 GTS and romance those beautiful Hawaiian ladies.
Magnum takes on only cases that suit him but they usually end up bringing him face to face with drug dealers, assassins and brutal thugs, and he enlists the help of his ex-marine buddies T.C. and Rick when the action gets tough. But the one constant thorn in his side is by-the-book, ex-British Army Sergeant Major Higgins, who rules the estate as with strict regime... with the aid of two Doberman Pinschers.
The natural successor to television's Hawaii Five-0 (which left the air the same year), #MagnumPI went on to become a long-running hit thanks to Tom Selleck's cheeky performance, the glamorous surroundings, action plots and comic interplay with John Hillerman as Higgins.

the part where he is driving the Ferrari from the grass to road, is ICONIC!
My friend and I were in his uncle's BMW. We were talking about that scene. We drove up to a boulevard. And he did the same thing (more mud less grass). It was hilarious.
The reason that scene exists was they could not get the Ferrari to spin its wheels on the road surface. So they thought that if they dropped the clutch on the dirt then pavement then fishtailed the wheels would continue to spin when it hit the road. Sadly it was not as fast as it looked.
Hughes MD 500 is iconic as well when he's on the helicopter.

I just tried to watch the first episode of the so called new Magnum,PI. I couldn't make it thru the 15 minutes of the show. Tom Selleck just fit the character and had the perfect personality for the show as did all the other cast members. There is only one Magnum and Tom Selleck is his name!

Only Tom Selleck can play the role of Magnum. Only he has the cool and funny charisma to play that character. The Ferrari just adds to the shine of his character and the music is like icing on top of the cake. When I was a kid, I didn't really understand what I was watching. All I knew was that Magnum and his Ferrari was the coolest thing I wanted to become. 🕶️

All the review outlets always say this series didn’t have enough Hawaiian/ Asian American actors and representation. My father grew up in Hawaii during this series and always marveled at the fact they used a lot of local celebrities in this show so don’t be fooled by the critics.

I was in love with the man when I was just a little girl lmao, this smirk he does when looking at the camera in his beautiful car and the way it drifts is just so iconic to me and is the definition of a handsome dashing man.
Best TV show intro ever. His expression at 0:15 is classic and can never be replicated.
Exactly! His sly look at the camera - breaking the 4th wall as the Ferrari tears up the grass before racing off is the embodiment of this show and Tom Selleck. No disrespect to the rest of the cast, writers or production team, but this show wouldn't have been half as good without Tom Selleck. He was sufficiently masculine and comfortable in his own skin to be able to pull off the often goofy humour and those outrageous shirts as he was the seriousness and occasional violence of his character. To me, the upbeat opening sequence of Magnum represents many things that were great about the 80's and my own childhood... and makes me feel warm & happy inside. It also instilled into me a 40 year love of Dobermans and of course, Ferraris. I've had both over the years.
The remake is just... No. Just no.

Magnum's handgun in the intro is a 1911 chambered in .38 Super. Throughout the series it is referred to as a "45". Must have switched guns at some point... Even so, this was one of the best TV series ever made!

Magnum P.I. Is one of the goats of action Tv. This was my dad show, and I use to watch with him. As a kid this intro got me hyped. He made everyone want a red Ferrari, definitely iconic with Michael Knights “Kitt”. They dont make great shows like this anymore

Love the guitar riffs on this theme! And I remember watching this back in the 80s, loved it! If there is a remake/reboot TV series, then it could work if crossed over with the new Hawaii Five-O, the character could help out McGarrett and co. But the original series was great entertainment, TV was awesome back then. No crybaby singing contests, you got quality stuff like Magnum PI, The A Team, Airwolf, you name it. That car is a classic now and he flies around in such a cool helicopter.
It's funny you mention Hawaii 50....Magnum mentions McGarret in the first episode (of the original show) as a TV character. But I bet they do a cross over to help spike ratings in this new one.

Two shows tripled Hawai’i’s population here--Hawai’i 5-0 1968-1980 with Jack Lord, then Magnum PI 1980-1988 with Tom Selleck. Honolulu is a “big” small town. One million ppl and we all know each other. Selleck is BETTER looking in person than on screen. Wow--30 years ago. Bicycling, running along Kahala Ave as he lived at Black Point--near Diamond Head. Super nice guy, always volunteering for local causes like our Wahine volleyball team (Women’s UH volleyball team usually nationally ranked.)
I saw Michail Baryshnikov w ABT, front row at Neil Blaisdell Center in 1985. Sat next to Selleck--Tom’s wife was a dancer in CATS. Once Baryshnikov came on stage--it was Tom who?
New Hawai’i 5-0 SUCKS...Hon has no SWAT or nuclear bombs...no automatic weapons, all wearing black/black gloves. 5’4” Scott Caan is a pain in the butt. Jack Lord was a gentleman and everyone on his team was a local. On this HI 5-0? The ONLY locals weren’t paid enough and left! Hawai’i is 1/4% black yet they have a black cop? Two white cops, black cop AND everyone else is 400# including Jerry whatever the hell he does..and obese guys who sell shrimp on da beach. WRONG. --flat out dumb! HPD is like 98% Asian! The beaches belong to the people NO private lunch wagons--draws too many pigeons. BTW--no sea gulls here--just nasty pigeons.

Ronan Conlon with filming the last season of Hawaii 5-0 just wrapped up, likelihood the Magnum reboot will not last long... Without 5-0 (which they finally did a cross-over with the two shows), there is no supporting sister show to mix it up again... Who knows, maybe it might survive abit longer when they put more effort into it now since 5-0 is no longer gonna be in the picture soon... Still, nothing can be as great as Tom Selleck and the original show, period.

Loved Magnum then and still do now, for me the best part of the opening credits was the assisting of the lady snorkeling (ahem) and the cheeky look to camera before power sliding off the grass on to the road with that famous theme tune... pure 80's class.
On a side note before the Ferrari 308 was chosen as Robin masters car of choice. Story has it Porche were sniffing round wanting them to use their 928 as the hero car.
Now I love Porche but I'm glad they went with Ferrari.

In 1987/88 I was stopped at a traffic light in Waikiki in my 79 Datsun at about 7 PM at night and I looked at the car next to me and it was Tom in a white Porsche looking right at me.....a few seconds later the light turned green and Tom made a turn into Nicks Fish Market where he was known to dine by anyone who lived and worked in Waikiki....it was cool to be locking eyes with Tom for a few seconds....
It was a simpler time... just dad and I chillin' on a Sunday, drinking fresh orange soda and watching Magnum PI 😊

Rick Slade same goes for Burt Reynolds (RIP). Tibbit: In the mid and ending seasons there were hints and teases that Burt might somehow make an appearance on Magnum... But instead had brief references of him as part of the plot in some episodes, such as Higgins mentioning "Magnum must be on the beach doing his pale imitation of Burt Reynolds!" And in one a security guard mistaken him for Burt on a movie set he was investigating after hours. Burt himself once joked in an interview that Tom was his long lost 'Son' or 'Brother.' A collaboration of Tom and Burt together in a movie was tossed around, but it never transpired. Instead, Clint Eastwood did one with Burt called 'City Heat' in 1984.

The current Magnum PI sucks. Jay Hernandez is too much of a pretty boy and feminine, Tom Selleck was a real man.

This show was a must watch event on Saturday nights i had a huge man crush on magnum even though i was just a kid in the 80s. He was everybody's reluctant hero and i loved Hawaii so much when i first went in 1988 i drove passed Robyn Masters estate goose pimples people ❤
