  • Since moving into our home in 2013 the network cables at our media panel have been unlabeled, meaning we've had no idea which cable went to which room in the house. I've thought about labeling them for years now and in this video I finally get around to doing it. I looked at simply buying some pre-made labels online but I'm a DIY kind of guy and felt I could make something myself for much less money that would suit our purpose perfectly; so I grabbed some clear packaging tape, fired up Photoshop on my PC and got to work. In his video I show you the process of how I planned and made my labels as well as how I traced/identified which cables go to which rooms in our house. It's actually pretty simple. I hope you enjoy the video and it helps spark some ideas for you.

Nice! Labeling cables is a must, especially if you have a lot of devices to use.

I am going through the very same dilema at the moment, trying to find decent labels to put on the myriad of cables I have in my network cupboard. Your DIY solution is fantastic. Many thanks for sharing.

You should get a Ethernet cable tester. Saves a ton of time and comes in more handy than you think. Gonna steal your label trick!

Thank you!! I've been trying to come up with cable management strategies in our home. Too often, we end up with "doom boxes" of old cables in which I have no idea what they belong to. This is a great way to know at a glance what it does!

This is cool. I will try this. You should have left all the cables in and just identified which one lit up when you moved from room to room. But I agree a toner or tracer would have saved time but, I’m cheap too 😂

Packing tape. Interesting. I've tried this same thing with scotch tape but found that over time, the tape would just come loose and peel off. But maybe the packing tape has a more robust adhesive side.

Nice looking ..tryed this method also .. packing tape will not stick for years ..because of temperature . especially in a cabinet with server/switches .. so not goed for long run .. you will have renew them sometimes or add new layer of clear tape ..

Thanks for the video. I just have a labelmaker sitting around to use for this kind of stuff, but the dang thing takes 6 AA batteries.

Nice! That's a lot of batteries though for one device! 😅

Brilliant! But my experience tells me the glue on the tape will fail and the plastic tape will yellow and become brittle.... what tape to use? Is Scotch or 3M the quality key?

Why no patch panel? Those male terminated RJ45 cables without boots really sets off my OCD.

why not leave all cables plugged into netgear switch. none of them will light up unless your laptop in plugged into the room you are in. That will save you some steps. Also, why not get 2 people, one in that room with switch and other walk around each room with laptop. then have them keep track on what cables lights up when you move to each room. by the way good video

I just checked Amazon and can buy 800 wrap around labels for 23.00 they come in sheets of 30 or so and can be run through a lazer printer.

Colored Cat6 connector boots.. 100 pieces for $9 gets you 10 colors with 10 each you can also just use electrical tape and then use a white permanent marker

Try to use wire tracker next time to check the cable instead of connecting to network one by one sir
