    You can cut the inner foam walls of any tray to make them custom sizes. You can also cut just one side, and fold them back to make a sort of retaining flap for longer bits. Sounds complex, but once you do it it's obvious. It's also easier to cut the pluck foam, rather than pulling it out. Use one of those dollar store retractable blade razor knifes extended all the way out, but be careful.
    The plastic handles are mostly useless and I don't bother with them.

      Good tip. I did that with the GW one I have. I hacked it to hell to fit in the alien queen and all the weird, dynamic poses of the Prodos stuff. For Feldherr I was trying to get "ready to wear" solutions (also, I was just checking out what they had as I'd never bought any before). I actually didn't have that much of a problem removing the pluck foam. I just did a terrible job of planning it out, and I kept making the holes too big! I might try cutting next time as it will make it easier next to narrow retaining walls.

    Probably comes as no surprise that I have about 20 of these boxes. You can order then from Feldherr through Amazon in the US and they ship for free. What's great is that if you order them one at a time, they ship in a thick cardboard outer box that opens on the ends, so you can use that as an extra sturdy storage sleeve for the thin inner box.

      Mine came in the sturdy individual outer boxes (Element Games just taped them together). My kids instantly claimed them for their craft projects!

    I just ordered there custom Hero quest foam insert as it looked like a great idea I had never even thought to even try making for myself. I was storing my Hero's Quest figures separate from the original box because they kept getting broken in the original trey & before I did that, I had to keep regluing them. However, as I did go out of my way to fix the broken box corners (a restoration process I learned here on UA-cam involving wood glue & tape). Using the original box seems more ideal especially as it's a vintage item & this would make it to look professionaly restored.

      I think the ones that go inside the original boxes are cool but I think they are best for games without expansions so you can get it all in the one box. All the Feldherr products are good though.

      Hero's Quest does have rare expansions but considering the game itself is a vintage item (I hear beat up boards currently sell on eBay for $250) getting the expansions would be to pricy for me to even consider for a game I only get to play occasionally.
      Besides, according to a famous UA-camr part of what makes Hero's Quest so Great is you can "immediately discard" the expansions as you get everything you need in the box "No more No less".

      @@yodaflyz Yeah, HeroQuest had plenty of expansions. I used to have Keller's Keep and the dungeon creation kit. If you don't think you'll ever get any then the Feldherr box insert is a fine storage choice.

    Looks good. How have you been storing blackstone fortress until now? I have a double core set with all the expansions with the minis in one core box and everything else in the other core box. It fits the minis exactly (including white dwarf explorers, retinue and enemies) but won’t hold respite or the zoat when they arrive

      The miniatures for most of my GW boxed games (Necromunda, Betrayal at Calth, Assassinorum, Deathwatch, Space Hulk, etc) are all stored in the game boxes. I stack my GW games upright and don't take them out of the house. The main exception to this is Blackstone Fortress because I have so much stuff for it across so many expansion boxes. Those minis were all stored upright in a Really Useful Box Co. box (which is also how I store terrain and a lot of my other miniatures).

    Just an idea for you. If you need longer or wider slots. Before you stick the grid to the bottom foam cut some of the dividers to make it bigger. That's what I did for the maxi bag I have. I also have a question for you. I'm in the market for another mini case because I need more storage. I'm considering going with the box version rather than the maxi bag because of the cheaper price and the fact that it holds more minis. My question is what's your opinion of the durability of the box. It looks like kinda thin cardboard how has it held up so far. Dose it seem like it will last long term.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  3 роки тому

      Yes, although I try not to cut dividers if possible. I have an old GW hard case and the inserts are so cut up it would never work for anything else other than what's in it without replacing all the foam. What I eventually started doing was cutting one side to make hinges so you could move the dividers but they're still there if you ever need them, although I am now moving to magnetised crate storage so don't really use foam at all anymore.
      The Feldherr boxes are relatively thin but when they are closed they are pretty sturdy. Mine are fine, but they only travel from a shelf to a table and back again. I think you'd have to give them a serious knock to damage them significantly.

    • @blg020
      @blg020 3 роки тому

      @@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring cool thanks. Mine will mostly just move from the closet to table. I only take my minis out of the house 1-2 times a year. So I think I'll go with the box version just because it holds more and it's cheaper.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  3 роки тому

      @@blg020 In that case I would say the boxes are a better choice. They stack easily too. I have mine sitting on edge on a shelf with labels on the side to say what's in them.

    I can highly recommend to buy half size in lays, much easier to sort and more space efficient in my opinion.
    Feldherr has a lot more choice then the usual wargamming stores.

      The layers that I have used for my D&D stuff are exactly what I was looking for so I'm definitely going to get more of those. The layers I chose for the other box were just experimental really - Feldherr have so many options I just picked stuff that looked like it would be useful and store a good amount of stuff! I might look into half sizes next time. That would probably be more useful for a box where I'm storing multiple games such as Anima Tactics, Burrows & Badgers and Dr Who. Thanks.

    Metal minis don't flake if you gloss varnish them first and them matte to reduce the shine. Matte varnish is the weakest top coat you can use.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  4 роки тому +1

      What gloss are you using? On the odd occasion metal miniatures have bashed together I've still had some flake even after glossing and then using an Army Painter paint-on matte covering.

    • @johnmiddleton4291
      @johnmiddleton4291 4 роки тому +1

      Use Automotive gloss varnish designed for cars. Also, on larger metal minis, like demons, vehicles etc, prime them with an automotive primer designed for metals. And that doesn't mean the cheap variety store crap, it means the more expensive super fine particle stuff.
      Also the Tamiya Fine surface primer is excellent for general metal mini use and comes in a brush on form as well.
      With primers and varnish you really get what you pay for.

      If you clean your metal minis (acetone, etc.) and use a good etching primer, the paint will almost never flake off barring contact with a hard surface from height, ie dropping onto concrete.
